Hello,

I've been doing CARS review for about a full year now. I read articles, a novel every week, learn SAT vocabulary, and have been doing 2-3 practice passages per day. I have seen a drastic improvement over this past year. I have done all of EK 101 and EK 101 CARS passages. I have about 10 months until I take my MCAT. I took the NS half length for CARS and scored 128. I have TPRH from 2011 is this still a good source? How about NS 108? I want to save the AAMC material for closer to the test date. What do y'all think?

Thanks

Sounds like you're taking a very systematic and comprehensive approach based on your perceived weaknesses. I think you are to be admired for your tenacity and organization. Stay on it and best of luck!

I did the NS 108 passages and thought they were a great resource. Just make sure you always do it under timed conditions and then go back and understand all the right answers!

Have you guys been using TPR Hyperlearning for CARS? Which edition?

Any reviews of the 2016 2nd ed. TPR CARS? The Princeton Review | Bookstore | MCAT Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills Review, 2nd Edition

I have the 2016 TPR CARS Skills Review book. If you're looking for tips and tricks for CARS (though I don't follow many of them myself), then this book is an okay option. If you're looking for a large amount of practice passages, I'd look somewhere else. There are only 2 legit practice passages at the end of each chapter (with question-type specific passages mixed in with some of the chapters). I only have the book because it came with the set I purchased. I wouldn't recommend buying it if you're just looking for more practice.

I keep hearing how TPR has the best passages next to the AAMC for CARS, other than the AAMC. And the 2016 TPR CARS book should be pretty much the hyperlearning book without science passages.

I'm assuming those people were referring to the TPR Verbal Workbook and not the CARS Review Book. If you're looking the the Verbal Workbook, I'm sure there are people in the for sale section selling their copies. All I can say is that the CARS Review Book is full of strategies and hyperfocused practice sections rather than a bunch of practice passages.

Oh, now that you mention it CARS is the only section I didn't get a content book for. I don't know if it's useful because many books do things like teach passage prioritization which may actually hurt you. But the OP did mention using EK101 content and practice books.

Precisely. One of TPR's biggest points in their CARS review book is their "Now, Later, or Killer" approach to ranking passages. I'm not a fan of the idea so I choose not to use it. In terms of practice, I've heard good things about NS 108, EK 101, and the TPR Verbal Workbook. Of course, nothing beats material from the AAMC.

I think TBR's books are pretty good so maybe check them out. They wouldn't be my first choice, but this far out, I think they're really good for what you're wanting to use them for. I think you're right to stay away from the AAMC stuff until closer to your date. Just make sure you leave yourself with enough passages when you start concentrated study. That's great you've been able to be so disciplined and consistent with your improvement. I'm sure a lot of people will look to your example and take a lot of hope from it. I wrote a post on my opinions on the CARS resources out there, so maybe check it out. Here's our Review of All CARS Materials Available on the Market!

Best of luck on your MCAT!
