I am stuck trying to decide between Mt. Sinai and Case Western’s Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine (CCLCM) program. Very different, I know, in terms of location, curriculum etc.

Does anyone have any input?

I am a NYC native, reluctant to leave the city/friends/family, but also attracted to the curriculum/research experience at CCLCM. I want to practice in NY eventually.

Any advice is much appreciated...

Every New Yorker is afraid to leave NY. There's actually a whole WORLD out there, and it's not that bad!! Check it out some time

But where's the poll? We need polls.

You created an account to ask this question (and posted it in the wrong forum I might add)? Sad

Without knowing anything else about you and what you want out of medical school/career, nobody can really help much. The programs are very different, although I will say that both are excellent and you can't go wrong either way.

CCLCM's curriculum is very non-traditional and research intensive. If you are looking to do research in your career, this might be the best bet for training. If you are reluctant to leave NY, Cleveland isn't that far away. And you would still have a pretty good chance at landing a NY residecny. But all that PBL and research they have there is not for everybody.

If you are sure you want to practice in NY, Sinai might be the best option, as you will probably have a better shot at a NY residency. Sinai is the [much] bigger of the two regarding class size. I'm not sure of it's curriculum specifically but I doubt if it is as non-trad as the CC's. And of course you are a New Yorker so all your support base is there, which is a plus.

The two programs both have unique strengths and it comes down to what is more important for you. GL!

Does anyone have any input? Where should priorities lie in terms of thinking about eventual residency matching?

Any advice is much appreciated...

First... I wonder whether your post belongs in Pre-Allo???

Anyway... here goes:

Consider my opinion extremely biased (see avatar)... However, as a fellow New Yorker, I decided to choose Sinai over UofPitt (a similar choice to yours) because I couldn't bear the thought of spending the next phase of my life in another city. Granted, I'm in an MSTP... so four years vs. eight years is a much longer period of time to consider. Nevertheless, my decision was based largely on lifestyle and geographic preference. Now, I can go on indefinitely about the strengths of Sinai in both research and as a medical school... but I'll save that for a PM if you want more info.

Congrats, and good luck decision-making!

I think curriculum is overrated in terms of importance. The first two years are largely self-taught even at the best of schools and the clinical years are highly variable by clerkship site, attending physician, and resident on your team. In other words there are no guarantees.

Research exposure is possible wherever you are but if that's really important to you it should factor into your decision, but just know that you have about 1 summer to do research. You can certainly make connections with faculty at another institution and live somewhere else for a summer while doing your work (though this is difficult). Most don't conduct research outside of their breaks. In fact, most medical students don't do research at all.

I highly recommend staying put. You will quickly learn that medical school can be an isolating experience. Family and friends outside of school are incredibly important and will help keep you grounded in reality. Plus, you said yourself that you like living in NYC. My hunch is that you won't much like Cleveland. (No offense to the Cleve-landers out there).

Pre-allo issue and moved to the Pre Allo forum. Medical students read and respond to threads in Pre-Allo and may follow and respond to this one.

i'd recommend case, but that's just because i reeeeeally want your spot at mssm.
