I just got back from my interview at Case Western, and i was really impressed with their facilities. I know that the other 3 interviewees are out there somewhere floating around the forums.. Anyway i hope this helps someone out there

Pros (I was taking notes):
-Their Dentsim looked outstanding (from the first interview point-of-view)
-Large Patient Pool
-You get to work your own operatory
-Nearly 100% graduate in 4 years on time
-No lab work - which means you don't have to spend tons of time making your own crowns when you don't do it in the real world anyway
-Tons of research opportunities = easy to specialize
-They give you your own secretary (how sweet is that!)
-The part of Cleveland that Case was in seem actually pretty nice (Unlike most dental schools, which seem to be in reputably bad locations)
-Students seemed happy to be there

Cons:
-Really expensive..

I came in really skeptical of Case Western (I'm not too big on Ohio) and i left totally impressed with their program. Everyone seemed really laid back, and they're implementing this new program starting this year that involves a loooot more free time (could be a bad thing actually).

🙄 What does it mean when you say you get your own secretary, abzirian?

Yeah, you know, when I visited case the thing that stood out was the fact that they have "secretaries" that book your clinic times and stuff. (*I hate talking on the phone to strangers.*) But as you get to the clinics you'll learn that you really want to be booking your own patients. You have your own scheduling preferences, things change day-to-day; secretaries don't know this. It's just a lot easier doing it yourself.

thanks for that feedback - it makes me excited to interview there!! best of luck to you.

CASE is diggity bomb....I loved it. Dentistry is not inferior to medicine there.

Whoops actually my interview date was 8/21 and not 8/20..

There was actually a couple positive things i forgot to mention:

1. Dental classes do not combine with med classes
2. Housing is generally really close to the school
3. Class size is 70 (nice and small)

Also, about the secretary, it seems that most dentists have their own secretaries.. I'm not a dental student yet so i dunno anything about the ease of use or anything like that, but it just seems like good practice to me to develop a good relationship or whatnot.

Student in the clinics are further divided into smaller groups. Within each group there is a secretary that schedule appointments. This is beneficial because you really do not have enough time during the day to make a lot of phone calls to patient, as usually you will have patients in the clinic all the time. This way, you would be able to concentrate on clinic work and not just dealing with phone calls.

I am a first year here at case and its the best. We do have a lot more free time "independent study" I usually do my studying on the golf course 😀

No really, we are covering the same material as other schools just in a different manner, called case studies.

Oh yeah, and we have tablet PCs so we can surf and post on SDN during boring lectures...pay attention brian 😡

sounds like PBL at USC...similar?

USC is 100% pbl, Case is more like 30%, we still have traditional lectures. We get tuesday and thurs afternoons off (after 12pm), and wed mornings off (start at 1pm)

what is problem based learning, thats PBL, right?
what are the pros/cons? thank you. 🙂
