Preface: I don't know if there are any doctors on this forum that are willing to answer a clinical question, but I am running out of options as my girlfriend no longer has the money to continue to see doctors and dermatologists who cannot help her... I am hoping by the grace of God that someone here is willing to help

Alright so here is a situation that has been going on for over 2 years now. This is not a problem that I am personally experiencing, but it is one that my girlfriend has been seriously struggling with. Clinically, the doctors that she has been to have diagnosed it as "burning lip syndrome"...

Basically, her lips are always burning and hurting, and they are also swollen. Heat, crying, and anything that touches her lips (food, drinks - has to use straw, hands, etc) will cause them to become more irritated, resulting in more pain and swelling. She has been to several doctors and dermatologists and no one seems to know what to do. The only thing that seems to help her lips is Eletone, a non-steroidal cream. She has to apply it many times a day just for slight relief from the pain. Steroids also eliminate the pain, but those are bad long term.

Here is a list of things that she has been tested for:

She has had an allergy patch to test for allergies. Negative
She has had a biopsy which only revealed some inflammation. Not helpful
She has been given different medications, including eletone, oral and topical steroids, elidel, vitamin b pills, alpha lipoic acid, doxycycline hcl, doxepin, sertraline, protopic tacrilimus, and amitriptyline hcl. None have really helped except for constant application of eletone, which only provides slight relief

So in conclusion, the only thing that has helped her is steroids and eletone, her burning painful and inflamed lips are not the result of allergies, and finally, she has taken many types of pills that dermatologists have prescribed but none have really worked.

I am helping her look for a cure. If anyone has been in a similar situation, or has seen similar cases like this, please let me know! Thank you very much.

I doubt anybody here will have an answer for you if her own physicians don't have other options for her.

That being said, SDN is not for soliciting medical advice. Closing thread.
