case vs rochester...can anyone offer a comparison of these two? and i know it shouldn't matter but which one is more reputable?

Go to Rochester. I applied to Case😀.

Both great schools. Case has maybe a slightly better reputation and match list but you'd get a great education at either school, and I would think which one you liked more and financial aid would be bigger factors then something as subjective as reputation.

Both schools are very good schools. I interviewed at both earlier this month and both certainly had pros and cons. Case does have a slightly better reputation and his been a leader in the innovation of medical curriculum for as long as it has been around. Their new curriculum is very PBL and small-group oriented, but the students seemed to like the curriculum. The University Hospital is absolutely beautiful but the rest of the school is sort of dreary. Case places a large emphasis on research - in fact it is part of the curriculum.

Rochester has certain aspects that it is well known for too - namely its biopsychosocial model of patient care. Rochester felt much more friendly and welcoming than case did when I visited - the students seemed much happier at Rochester. The facilities were not amazing, but they were nice. Their curriculum is well-developed and you actually start clinical internships right after Christmas in year one. I really enjoyed Rochester.

Ultimately, you have to decide where you feel more "at home". This is every bit as important as "the numbers" and institutional reputation.

I'd base my decision on financial aid. I loved Rochester but am concerned that they only offer need-based aid. I don't know about Case, but CCLCM offers merit scholarships, and since they're affiliated it might be the same.

I have been weighing this one out in my head for the last week or so. I got accepted to Case😀, and I should hear from Rochester any day now:scared:. Keep the comparisons coming!

Both CCLCM and Case offer merit scholarships, but CCLCM and Case calculate their financial aid a bit differently for those people who don't get full tuition. CCLCM has a bit more fin aid than Case, and Case maxes out your federal loans first before offering any need based money, while CCLCM does the opposite, their goal being to minimize student debt. According to their financial aid people, average debt at graduation at CCLCM is intended to be about $100k.

I agree with the sentiment that fin aid should be a consideration, though.

For Rochester:

What is the average scholarship amount per year?

$14,584 (2006-2007)

What is the average M.D. debt per graduating borrower?
$131,881 (2006-2007)

So it seems like Rochester gives out some scholarship money but I'm not sure how this compares to Case. I know CCLCM has about 30,000 but CCLCM is unique....i'm more curious about case med..

thanks for the comments guys

Didn't apply to Rochester so I can't comment on the comparison, but I know a few ppl in my class (at Case) who chose between them, just as I'm sure there's folks at UR who had the decision. They seem to have similiar programs, so it might come down to gut feel. That said, I would think that Case has stronger clinical affiliates & opportunities and more diversity in the patient population. Best of luck.

I'm interested in this debate as well!

I interviewed at both Case and Rochester last year. I was accepted at Case and waitlisted at Rochester. I withdrew from the Rochester waitlist immediately and ultimately decided not to attend Case. But I preferred Case to Rochester I was not too excited about Cleveland but I was very impressed by Case, especially the clinical training that I thought would be top notch. I got a better vibe from the students at Case but that is subjective with only limited exposure. I did get a nice financial aid package from Case which included a grant that would have paid about half of my tuition....a need based scholarship. Both schools are well respected. Both schools are cold in the winter but I like snow so not a problem for me. Good luck with your decisions. Make sure you compare financial aid packages because they can vary widely.

in interviewed at rochester and was recently waitlisted. i have an interview coming up at Case. loved rochester and expect to love case as well, based on what i've heard here and elsewhere. hope i have the luxury of comparing them head to head, but need to be accepted first!!

so this i think is pretty important too. at case and cclcm, classes end around noon. I looked at rochester's schedule and its PACKED until like 4-5 pm everyday. how do students find the time to do anything else? it would seem like you finish classes at 5 pm go to dinner and you'd be studying all night again. case has a lot of self-directed study....i don't know..i was leaning towards rochester, but this is making me consider case a lot more seriously...i also like how case has a 6 week period to take the boards in march instead of the summer after year 2

holy crap case western's match list is MUCH better than rochester's...how much do these lists matter?

Whether it's #20 or #25 isn't going to make a whole lot of difference, but you might also want to look at this med student survey.

http://www.amsa.org/premed/medsurvey/

It allows you to compare three schools at a time on some lifestyle characteristics. But more than anything, just visit both and see which fits better. They are both excellent schools.

if you are unhappy at case, it will be harder to match competitively bc your board scores/clinical evals will be lower. in that respect, it doesn't matter what the statistics say.
