I'm having difficult time deciding which school I should attend. Can you give me some advice on this?

What I like about UoP:
- it's in San Francisco. I did my undergrad in Illinois, and man, I really did not enjoy the winter there. Also, I feel like it's time for me to try living in the west coast after having tried the east and midwest.
- 3-year program. I really want to start my own life and become independent from my parents. I gotta start paying them back! it's about time.
- according to SDN, UoP provides great clinical experiences. (however, I heard other things from current dentists. So, I'm little concerned about this. Compared to Case, which is better in this particular aspect?)
- my girlfriend is planning to apply to grad schools. It'd be better for both of us to be as close as possible and Cali has some great grad schools.

What I'm concerned about UoP:
- the cost of the tuition and living expenses in SF are crazy.
- big class size. I'd be fine but I prefer smaller class sizes like Case.
- rigorous curriculum. I'm concerned that I won't have the time to visit my family and friends who mostly live outside the US.

What I like about Case:
- I don't exactly remember everything the students told me during the tour, but I remember thinking that the system and setting of the clinic are very well organized and student-oriented such as students having their own chairs.
- Small class size.
- Lower tuition (compared to UoP)
- Also, strongly clinically oriented.

What I'm concerned about Case:
- Cleveland. I really didn't like the city and the weather.
- the facility seemed ..old.. and a bit worn-out to me.
- part of the curriculum is pbl. i don't know much about it, but is it that ineffective?

Let me know what you guys think!

In my opinion...

UoP is less expensive than Case. Take into account that you graduate a year early. I'm not sure where you heard something bad about UoP from current dentists, I have heard the exact opposite. How many dentists did you actually talk to? Everyone knows UoP gives you great clinical experience, and that is what the school is focused on. At UoP, the curriculum will not allow you to do much during your first year (besides winter/spring break). After that, you will have more time to visit your friends and what not.

About Case:
PBL isn't ineffective, it is just a different style of learning. It depends how comfortable you are with it. Most people will get used to it. (I tend to like traditional learning better)

To me I think your decision would be a no brainer... I chose UoP over case. SF>>Cleveland, 3 years >>4. UoP reputation > or = to Case, Also since UoP is getting all new facilities, it will be even better than it is now.

But in the end of the day, my opinion or anyone elses here doesn't matter. Which one did YOU like more?

While Case tuition is less, it should be about a wash with that extra year of earning potential from graduating a year early at UoP. Personally, I'd go UoP. Best of luck.

If class size means a lot to you, go to Case because UoP's class size is huge compared to it (80 vs 140).

I'd go to pacific. Being to busy to visit relatives and being in lots of debt will happen at any school, so try a new adventure in California!

It's been mentioned that Case's tuition is cheaper than UoP's. However, if UoP is three years and Case is the traditional four year, don't the costs even out more or less?

Lots of people encourage going to the cheaper school and most of them have valid points. But the extra cost almost makes up for the fact that you're done a year earlier than expected.

You wind up paying more interest with the extra money you earn. But you cram everything into 3 years and you have a bigger class size. In the end even if its + or - 20 to 50K I would talk to UOP students and see how they manage their time and if they feel that its a good experience. Its a tough call to make unless you really know what it feels like.

It's not just about money. The idea of finishing early and starting your career/life after dental school early is appealing. Talking to the dental students themselves is always a good idea.

Current students are offer better advice.

So I guess talking to dental students is a good idea? lol

Monkey see Monkey do... jump off 🙂

This thread is meant to discuss UoP and Case. Stay on topic or don't say anything. Once again, this is not a place for bickering, personal attacks, or weird comments about usernames.

Yup so if you stop commenting on all my posts then we wont have any of that. apparently you are attached to my hip so I can't shake you lose no matter how hard I try. 🙁

I wish I had a dollar for every single time you said something along the lines of "stop commenting on things I comment on," I could probably pay off my private dental school education.

Advice such as "Hey, since you're confused about which dental school to attend, why don't you ask an actual dental student" is not some kind of groundbreaking intellectual property. Plenty of people on this forum have given such opinions, including me. 🙄

Stop hijacking threads. Doesn't look good. Now back to UoP and Case (unless wired has some obligatory last words...)

Hey if you haven't made your decision yet, feel free to personal message me. I can offer some insight. Last year I was given 5 offers and I chose Case. Then, at the very last minute, UoP offered a spot to me and it was a really hard decision to make. I am just finishing my first year at UoP. I can tell you the pros and cons that I have found at Pacific and what I think would be different at Case. I am happy with my decision to go to UoP though.

Just a quick reply to your 1st post-- here is a short list of the pros and cons...

Pacific:
- Love the area. I walked to dinner tonight and Pacific Heights (where the school is currently located) is just a really pretty place. I am a small blonde female and I feel so safe walking the streets here. I walk home at night a lot and I have never been worried for my safety.
- The school is pretty intense clinically. I think that we actually are more clinically oriented than other schools. If we lack anywhere, I think it is with the didactics because we are just taking so many classes at once. It is just harder to get solid A's in our science courses when you have a couple tests a week.
- The large class size hasn't been an issue. In sim lab and clinic we have plenty of one and one help. I think that what is more important than class size is type of faculty.
- It is nice having a break every 11 weeks. I get to keep in touch with my family.

Cons:
- Living here is expensive. Right now I live .5 miles from school and I split the rent of 1800 with my roommate (but the norm is about 1500 per bedroom). Parking is expensive too.
- The school is moving, so it might be annoying to move during dental school. I just moved though and it hasn't been that bad.
- The tuition is a lot. I actually had a scholarship at Case when I accepted their offer... which really made the price difference a little jump, but I still think it was worth it.

In the end what makes me really happy I chose Pacific is:
- the breaks every 11 weeks
- the location really cannot be beat... this place is so pretty. I feel like I am in a movie scene.
- The high expectations they have for us with our hand skills
- The 2 hour flights back home.
