Ok at my university, Case is affectionately known as Just-In-Case. However...I'm becoming more and more worried I won't even get in there!! Does anyone know how admissions there work, and what the typical admit stats are?? I just decided to apply to dental school 3 weeks ago, and yes I'm applying for this cycle...long story.

Here are my stats:
BS in Neuroscience, BS in Statistics
these gpas haven't been done by AADSAS...maybe they'll go up?
overall: 3.4
science: 2.9-3.0
DAT - not yet, I'm cramming these next 3 weeks...standardized tests are my thing, hopefully I can pull 20's
extras: i have tons of leadership, volunteer, etc....no Africa trips or anything but still quite a bit
I hate to bring this up...but I'm also a 19 soon to be 20 year old female...hey if I have to play the gender card I will!
I applied to: UNLV, Arizona, Colorado, Case, OHSU, Louisville, Kentucky...
Does anybody have input on these? particularly Case? there are some mitigating circumstances as to why I'd want to go there....please help!!

Any girl willing to play the gender card to get in has no integrity (unless she's a single mother who works 2 jobs, not a middle class princess worrying about what matches with her pink Prada's).

Gender card to gain an advantage in getting into dental school. This is one of the many examples of how the feminist theory are a bunch of crap.
NO WE ARE NOT EQUAL

just a heads up... you are not going to find many people here who are going to take you seriously when you "decided three weeks ago" (which I sure wouldnt say in an interview) to go to dental school, and "I might play the gender card." How are you even sure you want to become a dentist!!!!!???!!!! 3 weeks does not do it.

That science GPA means you need to score very high on the DAT.

Agreed. On the other hand, if I were a girl and had borderline stats would I play the gender card and try to get in? Sure. But the adcomms will most likely play it for you...aka affirmative action/equal opportunity.

ya, adcoms will bring it up anyway. You dont need to worry about bringing it up. You would look like a ****** if you did.

i really was just kidding about the gender card thing, I have more pride than that. As far as deciding on dental school 3 weeks ago, there are a bunch of circumstances that went into this...and obviously if I have the prereqs it can't have been too rash a decision. However...my question really is about those schools and Case specifically...I know I need to do really well on the DAT, but what range are we talking about? If my AADSAS and DAT gets to Case by middle of August, is that early enough to still be a viable candidate?

depending what school you are coming from I would say 20+ on the DAT... only because science GPA is pretty darn important. Your overall GPA seems fine.

AND IT DOESNT MATTER ONE BIT IF YOU HAVE THE PRE-REQs. Why not do medical then? You should have a reason for dental. 3 weeks may be enough to make the decision, but for me personally it took a year or more to finally feel like dental was the perfect path for me. I hope you ace the DAT! Good luck.

I agree...don't worry, like I said it's kind of a long story, but I have done quite a bit of shadowing and realized this is what I want to do...it was less of a decision to randomly go to dental school, and more of a decision to apply this cycle versus next. Thanks though...I need all the help I can get on the DAT!! I'm curious why you ask about what school I'm coming from though..does that matter? Its BYU, by the way

lcinva,

BYU? You're kidding me. (that was sarcastic by the way). I knew it all along, only a cougar could be that arrogant.

Go Utes!

HAHAHAHA ok Utah, what is that supposed to mean??? Believe me, I have been humbled enough in recent weeks to not only NOT be arrogant about all this, but to freak out and realize I have to rock the DAT in a serious way to get in anywhere....

BYU is a good school. I had a friend from there who got into Case with a 2.9 GPA but had a great 20+ DAT score. I would dare say BYU will give you a bump in the application as long as you DO WELL ON THE DAT. If you get a 19 or less I would say you have less of a chance. Anyway, good luck.

3 weeks ago.... Hmmm let me guess... Ah, MACAT score came out about 3 weeks ago!
Prereqs for med and dent school are almost the same..

Anyhow, if you are good at standardized tests, you will do fine. Good luck. 👍
I am not usually good at standardized tests, but it was surprizingly easy for me.

WOW, so someone with my kind of GPA (3.0), would need a 20 on the DAT? Ouch! How sure are you on this? I would like to aim for a 20, but I think I'll get an 18. Nothing less than that! But from what your saying - that's no good - right?

Back to Case. When the OP refers to Case as "Just-in-Case", is he/she refering to Case being an easy school to get into? Is there some kind of joke to this? Was I supposed to laugh? Thanks.

BTW...What's The Deal With Case?

hahahahah you'd think right??? no...i was pre-med for a couple years, but ended that way before I got close to the MCAT...and I didn't back off because of that, it was more the i don't want to be in school til i'm 30 thing. and the neuro major just kind of happened...and it just happened to include all the prereqs!

not necessarily a joke, just some commentary...it was the only school my ex boyfriend got in, and his grades were horrible and his DAT was average...nothing spectacular. Maybe he was a weird exception.

I just had to play the guessing game. 😉

interesting commentary...what other schools did your bf apply to, how horrible were his grades and what were his DAT scores...maybe he got in because he had other things like voluntary experience? Is that the CASE?

btw - don't worry, i didn't laugh (it was kind of funny though - just-in-case)

im currently going to case and i come from a family of dentists. making your decision in three weeks, playing the "im a female let me in card", shooting for low DAT scores, not only makes you a bad candidate, but also you have no idea what you are getting yourself into. do you know anything about dentistry? anyway, i think about ~1400 ppl applied to case and they accept 70. so, good luck with that

BYU has an unreal acceptance rate for dental school. If you have a 3.0 or under and do average on the DAT you are going to struggle to get interviews. FLAT OUT SIMPLY THE TRUTH. It can be done but....

I heard case is a good school. For some reason they love BYU students. I dont think there are any "bad" schools out there. We will all become dentists. Harvard does not produce dentists any different than Case. GO CASE!!!!

I'll take this one my fellow pre-dents who are busting their ass right now to get into dental school.

sparty1: thank you for you response. Nice to know you come from a family of dentists - you have a significant advantage! Student with parents as dentists do considerably better at clinical work (studies show). You probably feel very special to be in an 'elite' group of 70 out of 1400 applicants - right? Just to let you know, much more than 70 acceptances were handed out. And a lot of those students (1400) got accepted at other schools (probably better schools). All in all, the admitance rate was 50%. So, on average, you probably 'beat out' less people (much less) than you think.

I don't mean to belittle you, your in dental school, and you deserve it, but a little compassion toward our OP would be great.

just to clarify a what seems to have been a very provocative post without meaning to be...and to clarify for what seems to be the 10th time...the decision to actually go to dental school was NOT made in 3 weeks, the final (and i stress final) decision to apply THIS cycle was...which i added to explain my rush to take the DAT. I was joking about the female thing, in no way am I attempting to get into dental school because I am a girl. And its not even that big of a deal. I don't remember saying I was shooting for low DAT scores, obviously that would be a mistake on my part, wouldn't you say? I wanted an idea of the kind of score I needed to get. I have a pretty good idea about dentistry, in spite of the fact I don't have dentists in my family, I have shadowed over 100 hours, a pretty good number. Not to mention the fact that I worked in a dental office. My point about Case was not that it wasn't a good school, but that for some reason a lot of people from my university are able to get in there when they aren't able to get in other places. Sorry to have misled you like that...maybe I'll see you at Case!

Thanks for that post, fyi...I really didn't mean to cause so many problems!!!
not the first time my random sarcastic sense of humor has gotten me into trouble...thanks

I applied last year to Case coming from BYU with about the same stats and got 21 AA on DAT and 19 PAT. They asked for the secondary check so I sent it and the next day I got the rejection letter. At the time it was a bummer, but I got into a couple of other schools, and that's all that matters. At one of my interviews the interviewer made a good point about BYU students. He mentioned that there are so many of us applying that we are competing more against ourselves then the rest of the country. So if you do well on the DAT and have the other criteria: service, good essay and good interview schools you'll do fine. Anyways, that's my two cents.

The fact that you got a 21 AA and 19 PAT, and your GPA is probably (definately) better than mine (i'm 3.0 roughly), and you got rejected from case (an easy school from what i've heard), how do you think your post helps me, and other like me? Thanks Purtroricanhorse, for nothing!

jk 🙂

I think your problem is you dont want to accept the truth. If he is saying he got rejected with those stats what's wrong. He just giving another serious opinion. IOf you want to hear lie I will tell you. I got into case with 1.25GPA and 13 DAT. I hope that was helpful to you.

your right - i must accept fact in life. btw, an eye for an eye doesn't mean literally 'an eye for an eye', and it won't literally make the whole world blind:

first of all, it's a saying not meant to be taken literally
secondly, it invovles two people anyway - so how does the whole world get invovled?

gandi was a great man though!

After analyzing the OP "Just-In-Case", I wanted to know the intention of such a phrase. I took it as if to mean Case was an easy school to get into. Apparantly this was the whole idea of the joke. I decided not to laugh - since I was confused at this point. After a few minutes, I decided to let the issue go, until I read your reply that you laghed at the OP, "Just-In-Case". So, I am right now at square one, and I have to go through the entire process again of why it was I initially laughted.

Does three-oh represent your GPA? trust me, your not belittling anyone. since i do come from a family of dentists i have seen alot and experienced more than you and all your other undergrad buddies. talk is cheap, once yu get into dental school (hopefully you do) than yu can talk. untill then, try to bring up the three oh to a four oh. and trust me, i was there to busting my ass in undergrad and studying for the DATs. they dont just accept ppl based on their family background.

i don't mean to be so harsh, but it seems to me that your just another candidate opening his/her mouth. good luck to all!!!

again, I just want to point out that the only reason case even came up was because my bf got in there...he had about a 2.9-3.0 science gpa, not sure about overall but he was a neuro major so most of his classes were science so it couldn't have been much better, and he did like 18 AA and 21 PAT on the DAT. not great by any means, about average. And he got in on the first round of applicants. and what three-oh said about the acceptance rate is true, i would say 80% of BYU applicants apply there, but only about 4 out of the 100 or so go. because they didn't get in anywhere else. still a good school though!

Icinva: I graduated from BYU and am attending Case this upcoming year. I grabbed a sheet from the HP office which had every BYU applicant for the year 2003 and their stats and where they got into. Here are some of the kids who got in with a GPA around 3.0

GPA-- A/P/S-- Schools Accepted to
2.96-- 18/18/17-- Case
2.96-- 18/18/18-- Case and Indiana
2.98-- 18/21/16-- Michigan, UNLV, Temple
2.88-- 19/20/19-- Louisville
2.87-- 22/20/22-- VCU
3.0-- 19/18/19-- VCU
2.92-- 19/17/18-- West Virginia
2.99-- 21/20/2-- Michigan (resident)
3.0-- No info-- NYU
2.8-- No info-- Pacific
2.95-- 18/18/19-- Pitt, NYU, Boston, Michigan
2.93-- 20/21/21-- Temple, Boston, Pitt, Case

I think that you will be fine as long as you do well and your DAT and apply to the right schools. I think that if you get at least an 18 on the DAT and apply early to Case you should get in for sure. I think the fact that you are a woman from BYU will help you a lot. Case accepts a lot of BYU kids like you said, and in fact for the 2004 cycle 12 BYU kids matriculated there. But the thing is that each one of the 12 BYU students were males. So I think that you being a female from BYU will go a long way. Anyway if you have questions about Case just let me know.

I don't know where you got the idea that Case is a just in Case school. I have always thought they were one of the better schools around. I'm talking about the school not the location.
