i got asked this question during an interview and was kinda uncertain as to exactly how to answer it.

Question:
Lets say a group member of yours accidentally got emailed the answers to an upcoming exam. What would you do?

the key word is accidentally. I mean would you just go directly and report it without talking to that person? Wouldn't you want to convince that person not to use it? It wasn't like that person intentionally stole the exam answers.

my answer was: ethics is important in the health profession. I would talk to that person and tell them it is wrong to use it. I would not use it. And finally if the person uses it, I would report it.

To me there is no grey area when it comes to honesty. Someone is either honest or they aren't. Emailing answers to a test is dishonest as is receiving and using answers to a test. It's pretty black and white to me. If this happened to me, I would at least tell the professor that answers to the test were circulating around the students. It's not like we're becoming English teachers where if we cheat then we might just not know proper grammar. If we don't know what we're doing because we have the answers handed to us, it could potentially hurt someone.

oh yeah? let's say u have one exam left, your average is 60% and the passing % is 70. The only grade on the final, that would save your poor ass, would be close to a 100%. You accidentaly receive all answers for the exam. Would u report that to the professor:meanie: ?

from my understanding of the question, the interviewer wanted to know what I would do to the group member who accidentally received the answers.

Sounds like a setup. Notify the dean.

Something like that happened at UIC with last year's class. The TA posted some notes online, and attached the prof had the exam questions and answers. That caused some issues.

I hope I don't end up in that situation. I'd be a walking ball of stress if I was making a 60 in pharmacy school. All that tuition...all those loans...and to flunk out. Ugh. Makes me sick just thinking about it. But whatever grades I earn are what I earn. If I'm flunking out at a 60, then yeah, I'm going to earn that 60. I'm a firm believer in karma. The other day I bought 4 shirts at Goodwill. The guy only rang up 3 on accident. So guess who now has to go back and pay that $1.99 because she's been stressing out about it. Yeah, me. So to answer your question about the test, no I would not cheat. I don't want it to come back to bite me.

You don't think that it would look a bit suspicious if you got a spectacular grade on the final when you've done so poorly in the past?

Cheat to win that is life. If you didnt do it somone would have and you can always claim u never got it, went to spam etc..

Kind of a strange question. I mean, why throw in accidentally? If the student wasn't seeking the exam answers and they fell out of the sky so to speak, that student should notify the professor and let them know who emailed them. I don't quite get what this third person has to do with it. You know what I mean?
Unless of course that group member USED or planned to USE or did not report the incident- only then would I report the situation to a professor.

PS I think your answer was perfect.

thug life 4 lyfe!
yaaaaaaaaaaa buddy. Nice people finish last. Life is all about Darwinism. Survival of the Fitess. You find something you milk it for all its worth. Stuff like that i wouldnt feel bad but dont get me wrong. If i find money on the floor or a walet i'll go to the police station and give it up or any thing of that sort. Exams and Classes are another story.

it's sad but true that nice guys finish last, only in the short run. 👎

but in the long run, you end up being the real loser. 👍

How so? Look at it this way to make it in life you have to bend the rules by alot. Competition is fierce and it is only gona get worse. Volunteer hours you mean you would not fabricate it by a little to just give you an edge? You volunteered for 40 hours who to tell that this number is correct you could have just said 100-200. By fabricating you could have gave an edge between a rejection and waiting one more year or starting pharmacy I mean it is kind of sad looking at it and thinking how corrupt almost everyone has become. Take one example: My physics class we had weekly quizzes and I never studied for anyone but pull 100% on all. Why? Cause someone last semester took those same exact quizzes and saved them. Now would that be considered cheating or would it be using your resources efficiently.

P.S this is in no way attacking you. I am just pointing my views

Do the right thing and be a good human being. Life has a way to even it out in the end. Karma is a bitch and nice people win in the end.

"Nice guys finish last" may apply in relationships where women run over those guys perhaps... but life is little more complicated than that.

but see this isnt being nice, its just whether or not you are smart enough to use this to your advantage. Why study for 10+ hours when the exam is right infront of you. What happend to the Dont Ask dont tell rule.

So it's all about who cheats best and not who is most competent? Maybe you'll get away with it, but maybe you'll get caught and fall flat. Or maybe people like you are the reason why I can't have my exams back in order to study for finals which makes my life that much more difficult. Wow, thanks...

And, yes, I AM attacking you for your blatant lack of ethics. Deal with it.

😉 yep i am one of those people. However even in my school people somehow get the exams + if it is a public school you could argue that exams should be released.

come to think of it, i think the college system needs a reform. Too many loop holes that make it so unfair that people like me have to resort to playful games. i know someone who decided they wont study for an exam. On the day of the exam they went it filled it the scantron with a fake name memorized the questions and then went to the hospital and got a sick note. That person was then given the same exact exam as a makeup and he aced it. No it wasnt me i dont have the balls to do that. LOTS of Loop holes, this is one. I know like 100000X to beat the system. Another way is to sign up for a class then drop it on the deadline date so you technically never get dropped since they dont update the roster after that. You take the online quizzes etc.. blindly. You then write the answers down and wait till next semster. Guaranteed A

So Mr. Strong Armz - say you do get into pharmacy school and that you do cheat and lie your way through. Who's going to help you pass the NAPLEX? What about during your rotations - most preceptors are astute enough to know if you know your $h!t or if you're just bluffing.

Cheating can only get you so far in life - when it counts, you're going to have to know your stuff. Then you might be sorry that you "beat the system."

P.S. This isn't necessarily directed towards you, but why is it "cool" to ignore things like honesty and ethics? I know that I sound like a prude here, but I personally wouldn't want anyone handling something important like my or my family's healthcare to have cheated their way through school.

It won't work in pharmacy school. If you miss an exam with an excuse, your make-up exam will be different and much more difficult. No one in my class ever got a decent grade on a make-up exam.

Most of our professors provide us with old exams to study from, just to get a feel for the type of questions that will be offered. All of them change the questions each year. But sometimes they will reword the same question so that if you gave the same answer as last year on a question that looks familiar, you will get it wrong.

If you get into pharmacy school, you will have to study. If you don't have good study habits now, you'd better learn some.

Sounds exactly like someone I would want responsible for my health and well being.

ya i am not saying i dont study and just wing it. I just see there are alot of loop holes in the system that need to be plugged to make it far for everyone. I wrote about the physics quizzes and exams. Ya that prob is going to come haunt me cause i have no idea what went on the class but i managed to pull a 100 with minimal studies while everyone in the class struggled. Besides what you learn in school for the most part has nothing to do with real life. Life is not ideal, you have to adapat with your customers and new information. It wont be just memorizing anymore so you tell me why i need to take physics or some of those ******ed gen ed requirments to graduate.

Lets say the person didn't report it. If they did not and it was later discovered, the person could have their license revoked under the auspice of poor moral turpitude. Their degree could get revoked by the granting institution. I'd imagine the penalty would be severe because if the school does nothing, it is a violation of ACPE standands...which is a big major deal.

but if you are smart enough then you shouldnt get caught and why is it left up to you to report it. You can just pretend you never got something. Just dont save the file or anyting. No way of finding out. You need to have an edge in life to get to your goals otherwise if you play to the rule then you wont get far.

Here is a Scenario: You are walking on campus and you find an exam for your class that you were suppose to take tommorow. You havent studied a bit, now if you are confident that you can get away with it would you return the exam or keep it? I bet people here will be like i'll return it and it is immoral blah blah but if you were faced with it i bet you wouldnt even look back and just take it. It is easy sitting behind a computer and just typing what is your ideal way of handling but when the exam is staring you right in the eye i dont know.

In school I never once used a back exam even though they were ubiquitous. I may not have done as well (GPA 3.24), but I did better on the outside.

If cheat in school where does it end? Lets go real word here....you prepare a TPN for a neonate. The technician mixed calcium and phosphorus one right after another and you forgot to check the calcium phosphate product but signed off on the TPN report. The baby dies. Do you throw out the TPN log to avoid getting caught? Do you alter the timeclock in the computer to say you were at lunch?

What if you were in retail? The computer informs you of a hard stop for an interaction between isosorbide and Viagra. You dispensed it. Do you alter the computer record to show that the medicine was retruned?

If you cheat there, I would have serious concerns that you couldn't dispense medication safely.

no no stuff like that i wouldnt do. I have a person's life in my hands and i may face jail and god in the near future. Something like exams and school work why not but when it comes to real life and medicine and stuff like that. I wouldnt be able to live with myself knowin i killed someone by accident. I guess my black and white areas differ from yours and other peoples

Those are the areas in which a professional board would judge you. If it were my test, I would have the person rung up on the academic integrity/disciplinary commitee and follow that with a letter to the professional boards asking that a license for said individual be given a probationary period. There are several faculty who share this view.

OK - can we stop feeding the troll now? If I only had a finger to stick down its throat...

So an opposing point of view = troll? This guy isn't trying to stir anything up, he just disagrees with you. Dispensing with the labels will make you look even more like a saint ...

Nah, he was being deliberately provocative by advocating an ethically untenable approach to academic honesty. I have a right to my opinion and that opinion is that the "label" fits. You don't have to agree.

Last semester, we got two exams that were exactly the same as the 2004 exams in biochem. :luck: I'm sure that'll be the only time this type of thing will ever happen but it was incredibly lenient. 😀

His words don't match somebody who is searching for trouble, but you can tell be was being "deliberately provocative"? Your mind reading skills are astounding. People can be very different from you, does mean he certainly is "deliberately provocative"?

i believe what the interviwer would want to hear is either report the situation or tell the friend to report it.

Notwithstanding, not all of us would want to report this situation i for one wont, but if he uses it, i believe its none of my business. People hear seem to be offended that strong armz would use "his resourses" (the answers), but this is not a surprise at all cos people actually do it. it comes to ethical and moral issues. What might be right for u might not be right for another person. but imagine if this person was your really close friend and he just needs this to pass before he got dismissed from school would u let this happen to him. Search ur hearts real well b4 u answer cos there's a saying "its easier said than done"

if it came down to me, if i was doing well and i do not need it fine, but if i was failing and it was going to bring my grades up fine i might or might not use it.

stong armz if pple take a class this semester and memorize the questions so they could pass the next semester, then i blame that on the faculty who is too lazy to set new ones. I know of some teachers that sign up in test banks to get their questions this is not so hard. Some even have A-D so each student wont have the same questions. Lazy staff are those who allow these students to get away with such and these students end up not learning anything.

Either its right or wrong to us, it still just comes down to what the interviewer wants to hear. So please do not forget that its not ur friends or pple at SDN in front of u when u answer this question at ur various interviews.

Did I inderstand it correctly, snitching = honesty/professionalism ?
snitch = an honest professional?

Not all snitching is professional. Not all honest professionals (are ever in a situation where they have to) snitch. So no, your conclusion is incorrect.

Did I inderstand it correctly, snitching = honesty/professionalism ?

Semantics really. What's the difference between a snitch/tattletale/narc and a whistleblower/conscientious employee/"honest professional"? Depends on whose on which side of what coin.

Well semantics or no semantics, I personally will never shake a snitcher's hand, regardless of the reason he was ratting on his comrades.

Cheating is taken very seriously at my school. We have an honor code system, and every semester many students are accused of cheating and brought to trial. The system is very strict, so it's definitely not worth cheating. It's just not worth cheating at all in life, especially in a health profession when your purpose is to help other people in a professional manner. Maybe someone can cheat once or twice in the beginning and get away with it, but you won't be able to succeed in upper level courses if you can't even understand the basics. As far as I know, there has been on average of about 2-3 students a year who have been expelled or had to repeat the course they cheated in. When a student is accused of cheating, everyone in school is notified and the honor code committee asks for information regarding cheating in so and so class. I remember a 5th year student was found cheating in pharm lab, and had to repeat the whole year.

. It's just not worth cheating at all in life...

Personally, I've found it very worth it when my 6 year old nephew was kicking my ass in Super Mario Bros and I surreptitiosly unplugged his controller at critical moments. Sometimes you got to do what you got to do.
