I'm applying this cycle with roughly a 3.81 cGPA+3.81 sGPA and a 41R (14,14,13) on my MCAT. However, I withdrew from Calculus 1 my first semester during freshman year and received a W on my transcript. I used my AP credit for Calculus 1 so I wouldn't fall behind. Then, I took Calculus 2 the second semester during my freshman year and got a C. I don't really have any excuses for what happened freshman year, but I've had a strong upward trend since then (mostly As with an occasional B) and I'm a Texas resident. How do you think this will affect my chances of admission?

Not one ounce. That 41R is going to trump any blemish you could possibly have 😍

I was in the same boat. Although I received a DR grade instead of W.
For Texans, we don't really need calculus, unless you apply oos. I don't know why I chose the class. Anyway, if you took Statistics you will do fine. (;

Wait I'm confused. You took Calc 1 even though you had AP credit, but then withdrew.. so you later used AP credit for Calc 1 to avoid retaking the class, so you could take Calc 2? Why didn't you use AP credit for Calc 1 to begin with?

Looking back, I don't know why I didn't use it. I think I was just scared of starting in Cal 2, since math has never been one of my strengths.

I don't think 1 W and the C will affect your app (since it was during your freshman year while you're still adjusting to your new environment). With a strong upward trend (and thus a strong GPA) and a strong MCAT, you're all set.

Prepare for Caribbean

You'll most likely have to look into only Caribbean or DO schools

Are you sure you guys aren't being a little too optimistic?

I find it funny how people in this thread are treating OP like his worries about a W are neurotic or humble bragging, when so many people on SDN seem to be under the impression that a W is the same as an F and will ruin your day.

I know. So is it a big deal or not?

You think the OP pulled down a 41R, but can't figure out his 3.8+ hasn't doomed him?

I know the GPA/MCAT combination tables out there statistically predicts a 90 something % chance of admission, but I think the 90% chance is lower due to the blemishes. So here are some more questions I have that will help relieve me of my doubts:

Is a 3.8 with 2 Cs any better than a 3.8 with 4 Bs?

And how do you quantify Ws?

You're fine. Those people saying schools will ignore your GPA because of your MCAT score are off-base, but it doesn't matter because your GPA is still very good. Nobody is going to give a **** that you have a couple of C's or W's.

Okay, let me take a deep breath and actually explain this to you, because you clearly don't understand how incredibly naive you're being right now.

Adcoms are concerned with Ws and other mediocre grades because it can be an indicator that people are not able to academically handle the rigors of medical school. You have one W and one C in your FRESHMAN YEAR of college. Since then, you have had a strong upward trend and destroyed the MCAT. Adcoms are going to give two flying sh*ts about this "blemish" that happened three years ago.

Please. Stop. Being. So. Neurotic.

Haha. Okay, thank you for the crystal clear explanation. Sorry for being so neurotic. It's just the way I am.

You probably needed a 42 to cover up the W and C. Almost....

👍 OP, you're fine with the rest of your stats. Don't worry.

Sent from my phone.

For real. You're totally going to be fine.
