Is it okay to give out social security number to a community college? I visited and it literally looks like some high school and the last thing I want is my information being handled carelessly. I am only taking a couple of classes here so I am not sure if its required to give it even though the application says required when I try to submit it.

I went to a CC for three years: it's fine.

Put the SSN down so you can apply and take the classes you need to take.

If I'm not mistaken, your SSN is also used as an identifier in the database of the National Student Clearinghouse, which is used for enrollment verification and such.

If a school (that you will potentially be giving thousands of dollars to) looks so sketchtastic that you don't feel good about giving them your SSN, then maybe you should find a different school. Or just get over it and take classes there like everyone else.
