Hi all,

I am an Engineer trying to get into DS. Background: I have only two M.Sc. transcripts that will go towards the GPA calculation in AADSAS (One Comp. Sci, one Math). My B.Sc. won't be counted since my undergrad was not at a US/Canada school.

Here's my situation:
In order to complete DS pre-reqs I have been "forced" to take Bio I, Chem I, Chem II, O-Chem I, Bio II at a Community College. Reason being that I am the main bread-winner in my household and I can't just take off in the morning to go to class...I work full time. 😱 👎 I have to take classes in the evenings or weekends.

Question is:
What will happen to my chances of getting in DS if I keep encountering this scheduling nightmare?

Has anyone been in this situation? What was the outcome?

Thanks in advance for your insight.

I took ALL my pre-reqs from a CC having already attained 2 bachelor degrees in the past (a few yrs ago). I did not encounter any problems, no one questioned this issue and I ended up being accepted at 4 graet schools. So, it can be done; just make sure you do well in the DAT so that you can "justify" and "prove" that your CC education was worth it and that you learned and retained what was needed to do well on the test. Good luck!

I'm in the exact same boat as you. I can't afford going to school during the day. As wimmcs mentioned, most schools don't care much about the cc thing as long as you do well on DAT esps you already have a degree. But you may want to check with your schools of interest. At least one school ( I believe University of Michigan) states on their site that they want to see pre-req taken at a 4-year college.

Hey guys, I am newbie at posting here. Just wondering, I took some pre reqs at a community college, do they get calculated in my science and overall gpa?

BTW, i have browsing this site for a while and a lot of you guys have been very helpful with the info. Thanks a lot!

Not only did I spend my first year of college at a CC - I had a 1.1 GPA to show for it! I then attended a not so great state school for by BS. There I pulled straight A's but it was still a pretty non-competative school. Every program I interviewed for I was accepted to - 8 in all. Now I'm a dentist - go figure.

Point is most admissions people will understand most situations if there are enough "good things" about your application - Don't be afraid to use the fact that you're working full time to support your family as the central theme in your personal statement. I'm very confident working full time to feed your family qualifies as something an admissions officer will take into consideration.

Thanks, Wimmcs. This makes me feel better. If I may ask, what GPA and DATs did you apply with? Did you get a lot of interviews and offers?

Thanks again.

I sure hope so, 'cause that's what I'm doing. Otherwise how would Admission Committees know that you have your pre-reqs?

Best of luck!!!

If you have to take classes in CC do it.

I took more than half of my classes in CC but I still got in to some of good schools.

Don't worry!
