CCM anesthesia positions

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

All over my friend... All over....
People don't go crazy - now - for this fellowship so there are plenty of opportunities.
I can't recommend a specific program.

I recommend the ones that can at least get you a "PASS" on the Basic TEE exam.
More credentials can NEVER hurt in the ObamaCare health system.

I'm already on it. The more i think about it, the better of an idea it becomes..

Still available. If you have the balls - do it.

Excuse my ignorance, still a third year, but interested in both Anesthesia and CCM... Why does doing a CCM fellowship take balls though?

My understanding from reading these boards is that CCM job opportunities are looking up, one of the more viable fellowships in light of a changing marketplace. Am I mistaken in this?

I don't think it does. Just another year of hard training. Great idea for someone at your stage. Great idea in my opinion.

What makes this such a great idea, simply because it makes you more marketable, or does it add to the diversity of settings where one can work (practically speaking, in the community)?

all of the above plus it makes you a better clinician. How bad can it be? putting in orders, doing procedures staffing consults, and not writing a single note, well except procedure notes, but you can make templates very easily. I'd do it, a year of training for a life time of being a better clinician and options.

Amen to that.

1. CCM- You get Boarded in Critical Care. More job options which pay MORE in Academia.

2. TEE- Some offer TEE training and exposure. Some can get you enough training to easily pass the BASIC TEE exam or even, maybe, the Advanced TEE exam. This means more job offers in Private practice.

3. Future- If hospitals decide to hire more CRNAs and less MDs the job market will tighten and those that act as a HOSPITALIST or CRITICAL CARE DOCTOR may get the job over somebody else.

4. Marketability- Some Groups will still prefer you over a non fellowship trained Anesthesiologist. They will believe you can do the sickest patients in and out of the heart room.

So how does one go about finding fellowships with open spots? I know that you can goto FREIDA and see the list of fellowships. I guess I just answered my question. If anyone knows of any fellowships with open CCM spots, please pm me.

2win, whats your back ground are you anesthesia CCM? do you work as an intensivist?

Anesthesia CC - 3 weeks CC , 1 week anesthesia.
Pay - 300K +.
Academic because I choose it.
Private practice offers - 300 + for cc , 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off.
I feel it very stable and I like it.

You need the balls because you lose a potential 300k ( if you work anesthesia in that year)...
300 K is a lot of money. 🙂

Cool thanks for the insight guys!

That practice model seems very appealing 2win, I really like the variety of cc work and or work. How common is it to find a model like that in either community or academic settings? Is it the kind of thing you negotiate for?

Thanks for the info 2win. Are the private practice offers you see, like a week of 12 hour days then a week of 12 hours nights in a row? Have you come across many anesthesia + ICU jobs in PP? Is it common to use the 2 weeks off to do anesthesia? could really bump up the salary with that.....
Thanks for the info!

So - in PP the schedule is 7 days on - 12 h, 7 days on night 12 h, 2 weeks off.
In the weeks off nobody cares what you do ( BUT I bet that they don't like you to provide the same service - and I mean CC across the street - you can do anesthesia though...).
There are jobs, not so many advertised. You gonna be an asset for any decent PP.

Thanks!!!

I am getting ready to hand in my CCM fellowship application! Eeek. I hope I am doing the right thing. I love CCM but there at not a lot of CCM-Anes jobs out there (at leat not on GasWorks ha!). I think having CCM under my belt will make me a better clinician and strong candidate when hunting for jobs in the future. Anybody know any good contacts out West? Looking at Seattle. PP or University.
