Hello everyone:

I am writing today about insurance. I was wondering if anyone could share what health/dental insurance they are going with for school. To be truthfully honest, I have insurance from my job now, and I totally forgot about the fact I will need a new policy. Anyway, any info., prices, deadlines, etc... would be most appreciated!! 🙂

Kristopher:

Did your award letter come by mwu e-mail or snail mail?

Anyway, have a great day everyone, and thanks in advance for your replies!!🙂

Hey Adam,

I'm going to go with Midwestern's insurance b/c unfortunately I'm too old to be kept on my parents'. 🙁 I don't know how good the school's insurance is, but there is no choice in the matter.

My cell phone service is closing in on the end of the contract period and I am thinking about possibly changing providers. Which company gets the best service in the buildings, especially in the traditional dorms (where I'll be living)?

Thanks a lot.

Hey Brian,

Just keep your plan and don't re-new your subscription. Usually after your 1 or 2 year agreement you are free to disconnect at anytime. When I visited campus a month ago, I had pretty solid reception with sprint. Granted, where you are living on campus compared to where I am living A109 (I think), could have different reception. But overall, I was satisfied with my reception. Moreover, the whole of Downers Grove had good reception with Sprint. I say wait if you can until you get to school. Well see you at the BBQ...

-Aaron

p.s. who else has received their financial aid letter? I know I have not...

p.p.s. I am going with the MWU's Health Insurance plan.

Aaron-
Thanks for the post. I have Sprint now and I'll just stick with it for now. I'm also in the A building, but up on the third floor, I might call soon to see if they have anything else available. I think I'd prefer to be lazy and not have to go up and down steps all the time. I'm going to try and make it out to Chicago for the bbq.

I also have not received anything about financial aid. Also, I am going to go with the MWU health insurance since I get kicked off my parent's plan in a few months when I turn 23 - I'm one of the young ones around here I think. What all do we need to do to sign up, do you know?

See you all soon.

If you go to this website ( http://www.chickering.com/default.asp ) and click on student, and then search for Midwestern, you will find a PDF file with some info and what the plan offers. I think its last years plan and I know the cost wen up this year. Anyhow, I think we sign up when we start school. This I am not sure. I think I will try to make a phone cal this week, so I know how to sign up. Well, can't wait to see you at the BBQ. Talk to you soon.

-Aaron

Hey Everyone....

My financial aid award letter came by mwumail.........when you get it, it's kind of confusing on what you need to do. So I called fin. aid and they told me that if you are satisfied with what you were allocated you do nothing. If you need more, then you need to apply for private loans, and if you want to reduce you click on reduce and then "submit".

As far as the insurance goes, I was told that the plan is a PPO. Which is great news since HMO's suck! I can't remember the insurance provider but if I remember correctly it's Cigna.

Hope summer is going well......I'll see ya in about six weeks!

Kristopher

P.S. If anyone is interested, I am on the organization committee for the annual regional AMSA, ( American Medical Student Associaton ), conference. This year it is being held in Chicago at Rush University. I am in the process of contacting our dean to see if she is interested in participating by speaking. I will keep everyone informed on the details.

Hi Audrey!

Orientation begins on the 3rd of Sept and goes through the 5th.

Have fun planning the honeymoon! 😉 Just out of curiousity, where are you thinking of going?

Hello everyone. So after speakig with Adam (who has graciously accepted the job of helping me plan this CCOM MS1 BBQ), we have decided that a good time for people to arrive is between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. on August 9, 2003. This way people can slowly make their way over. I figure we will start the food part of the BBQ around 6:30 - 7:00 p.m. with munchies before hand. This way if people want to go out to the Bars or Clubs afterwards they can. Their is plenty to do around me. I live less than a 5 minute walk from the "L" (the Chicago version of the subway). Also, for the people who will be driving in, I will have plenty of parking permits so you can safely park on the street witout getting a ticket. I am not sure why Chicago has parking permits for different areas, but they do. So in the next few weeks, there may be several more posts about this BBQ (food for the BBQ, directions, etc....) Well, I have said enough. Talk to you all very soon.

hey audrey -
you should think about staying at the sonoma mission inn (sonomamissioninn.com) if you're considering vacationing in northern's california's wine country. it's by far the best place in the area. pricey, but worthy of a honeymoon, and a place you won't forget. you guys will be pampered to death. actually, you might be too relaxed to focus on school so soon after 🙂
let me know if you've got any questions as i've lived in the bay area for the past 10 years.
john

Hey Audrey,

Yes, I will have plenty of parking permits for everyone. As for the BBQ, I am not sure about the whole food situation. Adam and I discussed the possibility of having a potluck or just making a small donation to the Adam and Aaron BBQ fund. We'll see. Let me know what you think.

Anyhow, enjoy your honeymoon. I am originally form Northern Califonria. I lived there.... well until this past year. You will love the area. If you have any questions let me know. Whenever I had friends in town I took them to 3 places (monterey/pebble beach, san francisco, and Napa/Sanomoa) If you go upto Sanoma, you can try to get reservations at the French Laundry. It is probably one of the best restaurants in the nation. My brother had to get reservations 2 1/2 months in advance... Anyhow, enjoy...

hey aaron -
i'm now living in chicago - just bought a place downtown - so if you need a hand shopping/preparing let me know. i'm cool w/ whatever works for most people, either kicking some $$$ in, or bringing something.
-john

Hey John,

You are living downtonw? Where? I was thinking about trying to stay in Lincoln Park and commuting but I decided to move to campus and forget the commute. Anyhow, we should get together and do some thing. Hey if you want to help bring food, I think we should just do one big potluck. I think Audrey wanted to help bring food as well. So Adam and I will handle the main food and maybe everyone can bring like a side dish (salad, pasta salad, chips, salsa, dip, sodas, etc...) What do you think?

Hey guys......just want to remind you have a beer ( or two ) for me at the BBQ. I wish I could be there with everyone. 😀

Thanks for keeping the thread going Adam.

I was just wondering if anyone still wanted to try and get together some weekend in early August? It would be great to meet you all before orientation gets started.

I was also wondering if anyone knew any more information about books, instruments, etc. that we will need for the first year. If anyone knows, please let me know.

I hope you are all enjoying your summer. See you soon.

Karen

hey aaron -

i sent you a pm. i'm totally up for doing something. now that our place looks like home, i've been spending my days riding my bike, swimming, and bumping a volleyball around on the beach. i'm loving the weather and the lakefront. summer is especially sweet since i just left winter in sf 🙂

as far as the bbq goes, it's probably a good idea if everyone brings some kind of side and you grab the meat and drinks. then we can all kick in some $$$ to reimburse you. probably the easiest way to do it without having to make any lists. so what if we get 2 potato salads?

john

Hi All-

Aaron, please count on me being at the bbq on Saturday Aug. 9. I am excited to come, but I'll be arriving late that afternoon in Chicago from Northern Michigan, so I'd like to just kick in some cash, if possible. Hope everybody's summer is great, and I'll see you soon!

Hey Adam and everyone thank you so much for helping to put this BBQ together. I have received so many PMs from people who will be coming and who want to help. So I will try to get a lot more organized by this weekend what we will need for the BBQ. It seems like we will have a lot of people. If everyone is this friendly, i think we will have a very close class. Talk to you all soon!!!

-Aaron

Just wanted to peek my head in and say hello again...you guys sure do have a great thing going for next year...and i can only hope that i am given the chance to join in the fun. Is there anyone else out there from California?

If there is.........I just wanted to let you know that I will begin my long journey to Chicago on Aug. 23rd. If anyone else is planning on driving to school from out west, let me know if you want to meet up somewhere along the way. A friend of mine will be joining me to help out. We plan on stopping as often as possible to see the sites and party.

Our main stop will be in Vegas!!!! We will be there for 3 or 4 days. From ~ Aug. 23 - 26.

Also.....move-in day for the dorms is Sept. 2nd. I think we should try and get everyone together that night to hang out and have fun!

btw.....Hoosier......if for some unknown reason you still have not been picked-up off the free-agent list by that time....I'm sure you would be more than welcome to join since you will be a post-bac student. But..............I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and everyone else on the waitlist!

Adam-
I just found out today that I was moved into an on-campus apartment. Could you PM me with your phone number, I'd like to ask a bunch of questions about when you went to check the apartments out.

Also - I'm going to try and make it on Aug. 9 - I can't guarantee it yet.

See you all soon.

I think I may be visiting friends in Chicago this weekend. If anyone is going to be around and wants to get together, I am up for anything. I am planning on going appartment shopping, so if anyone has any suggestions it would be great to hear them. Otherwise, I will be driving blindly around the area.

BPlato:

That is some great news. I was hoping someone I would know ahead of time would be with me in the apartments. Do you know the address yet? Mine is 414 Woods Lane Apt. 8D. For any questions here is a post written to me by the student who so graciously allowed me to visit her apartment:

"You asked the right person. I live in the apartments this year. Last year I lived in the traditional dorms.

The apartments have 500 square feet of living space. The bedroom dimensions are 11' by 10', and the living room/kitchen dimensions are 11' by 19'. There is also a bathroom with a tub, wall cabinet with a mirror. The door to the bathroom has a full size mirror on it (on the bedroom side of the door). There is a ceiling light in the living room, and a ceiling/fan light in the bedroom.

You can hang things up on the walls.

There is enough space for a computer desk and separate desk to study, but in the living room. My bedroom only has a full size bed, nightstand, and a small drawer/dresser set. If you didn't have the nightstand, and if you had a twin bed, I think you might be able to fit another desk in the bedroom okay.

There are no carpets -- just linoleum. I have a 5 x 8 carpet in the living room. The bathroom has tile. You need to supply the shower curtain. My bathroom had shower curtain hooks, but maybe others don't.

There is a full size refrigerator, kitchenette with an over and electric stove that comes with the apartment. No dishwasher.

There is strong pole in the bedroom to hang your clothes. There is no door to this little closet enclosure.

There is also a pole in the living room to hang more clothes, if you want. It could be a closet for your winter coats. There is lots of cabinet space in the living room. I put some of my clothes in there.

There is a water heater, a heater (that makes a lot of noise) in the bedroom, and an air conditioner. You should bring your own reading lights for both rooms.

There is a cable connection for a T.V., and also a free internet connection to the school server.

There is a washing machine and dryer for all 8 apartments to share on the 1st floor of the building. They cost $0.75 each.

There are two floor to ceiling windows in each room with think horizontal blinds on them.

There is a smoke alarm in the living room.

There is a Target close by, so you can buy a lot of the stuff you need, like a dishrack to dry your dishes, etc.

Like all on-campus living, you get free voice mail. However, you cannot store messages on them for long, as they are deleted. Also, you have to bring your own phone for the apartments (unlike the dorms)."

Anyway, there are some answers to the most common apartment answers. Please let me know if you have any others. My cell # is 815.405.8959 and my home # is 815.478.3225. Feel free to call anytime. I work midnights and my cell is only off when I am at work. This message is open to all CCOMers who need some info for the on-campus apartments. Talk to you all soon and I hope to see everyone Aug. 9th 🙂 🙂 🙂

i recently moved here from Pittsburgh, Pa....will be starting with all of you in Sept.

The BBQ sounds great...is there someone who could give me some more details?

my email is [email protected]....i am now living in Oak Park...look forward to meeting all of you soon...

Hey Keith and all,

I emailed you personally, but this is for you and everyone else. I hope to get a detailed plan of the BBQ by this weekend. I think I will have people email me and when they do, I will reply with time, directions, and food needed. So it looks like we will have a nice size BBQ and great kick-off to the next fabulous four years! 🙂 See you all soon.

CCOM 2007

btw, hoosier...

I just write a letter to withdraw from CCOM. You guys probably call them next Monday on to ask them for any opening spots. It's a very difficult decission I had to make because I just love CCOM. I am glad to see such a great enthusiasm from students at CCOM.

Again, good luck to all of you who are on the waitlist!!! My pray is with you...😍

I'm in for the BBQ. I'm living in Wisconsin for the summer, so it will be a fairly quick drive to the Chicago area. Anyway, I'm looking forward to meeting everyone there.

Todd

Hi:

I just found out about this website a couple of days ago. I'll also be going to CCOM in the fall. I just finished my degree in Finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and I've been relaxing this summer before school starts. You all seem very friendly and enthusiastic which is a good sign I hope. The bbq sounds like it's going to be good times, it'll be nice to meet some of you before school starts. And since people are sharing so much about themselves I might as well add a few lines about myself......

-- I live in Darien, which is about 7miles from CCOM. Actually, I'll be living in my parent's basement my first year. I figure I'll save money, won't have to cook, and so far my mom hasn't charged me for laundry..........so I got that going for me, which is nice.

-- I'm 22, so it looks like I'll be one of the younger students there, but I think it'll be a better experience to have a wide range of ages in our class.

-- I'm interested in Emergency Medicine (it seems like there a few people from this forum that are as well). I worked as a Clerk Coordinator (which is a glorified way of saying secretary) at the Emergency Room at Mercy Hospital in Chicago. Side Note: Three M4 students from CCOM just started their EM residencies through UIC's program which is one of the best in the country (one of them is EM/IM), and the year before there were 2 students from CCOM that joined their program.

Anyways, I look forward to meeting all of you. If anyone has questions about the area surrounding CCOM or Chicago feel free to email me, [email protected], I've lived here for most of my life so hopefully I can be of help

Enjoy the rest of your summer.

Hey everyone,

I finally got my act together on this potluck BBQ. Remember I will have parking permits for everyone who is driving.

*** I will periodically post this message to show what we still need ***

Sincerely,

I'm sorry I won't be able to make the BBQ, but I look forward to meeting you all at orientation.

A quick question...does anyone know off hand the specifics about the white coat ceremony? Time, date, who usually attends (guests/family)? Thanks.

Karen

Hello Karlee and CCOMers:

To those of you who have not received the orientation packet from Student Services here are some interesting factoids:

1. The white coat ceremony is October 3, 2003 from 3p-5p. It will be held in the Library's Auditorium. I heard you can invite whoever you want but I am in the process of verifying this information. We will get fitted for our white coats on September 3, 2003 between 1p and 3:15p.

2. Orientation days start and end at the following times:

a. Wednesday: 8:45a - 4:30p
b. Thursday: 8:30a - 6:30p (includes a picnic)
c. Friday: 9a - ~4p (includes a community service project)

3. We will receive our class schedules, IDs, apply for insurance, parking, dining services, computer stuff, etc... all at orientation!

4. For those of us living on campus, we can move in at 9a on Tuesday, 9/2/2003. If we arrive before 12p we will be getting our ID/yearbook pictures done that morning. Also, there will be a mandatory meeting at 5p that night for all on-campus residents!

Finally, according to the packet all of orientation is mandatory so plan accordingly. This is so exciting to think we only have less than 1.5 months until we start med school!! 🙂 Anyway, I hope this info helps everyone out and I hope to see tons of you at the BBQ. I hope everyone is enjoying their summer, take care and talk to you all real soon!!!! 🙂

Thanks for posting that info Adam........ I haven't received my packet yet.

I'm pretty upset about the date of the white coat ceremony though. I was told in April that the white coat ceremony was on Sept. 26th. So I booked multiple airline seats and hotel rooms for that time. Now it's costing me an extra $276 per person to change the dates! Ugh!!! Frustrating! 😡 +pissed+

Kristopher:

Sorry I had to be the bearer of bad news. Don't let it get you down too much...remember, in 44 days YOU will be starting medical school!!!!! Take care and I will talk to you later!

very well put Adam.......what's another $1000 anyway right? Since my first year loans are $51,675 😱

Anyone know if campus is/or is planning to be wireless?

See you all soon.

Kristopher:

I feel you...I just got my award letter and my 1st year comes to 47K, and I am also planning a wedding for next October. Just think how nice a FREE med school would be  Anyway, I'll chat with you later. By the way I am very sorry to here that you will not be able to attend the BBQ. But, I am sure once you finally arrive in Chitown we will hang out before school starts. Take care!

I'll be at the BBQ in spirit. Wish it could go but i'm not moving untill Aug 19th and i'm pretty booked with work until then.

this is going to be such an excellent class. Everyone's so excited and friendly, I don't see how these next 4 years could be anything other than excellent.

does anyone use AOL instant Messenger? It would be nice to talk to actually talk to people in real time.

my screen name is Virulent101

have a fabulous summer. Enjoy it while you can.

excellent idea about the AOL instant messenger Tashby....

mine is SoCalChemistry.

Hey Adam...why is your package less than mine? I guess you are going to have to buy the first round when we hang out! 😛

Also, don't forget to mention to everyone at the BBQ about hanging out on the evening of Sept. 2nd. I guess we have a mandatory meeting at 5pm that day for on-campus residents, but we should get as many people together from our class that night to hang out. I'm sure there might be some MS-II's who might want to join also.

Kristopher

BUMP!!!

and Kristopher....don't worry, the 9/2/2003 night out will definitely be shared with all CCOMers I come in contact with!! 🙂

So who is in for the BBQ. Just wondering the head count! See ya all later!! 🙂

hey guys me again...i hate to keep poking my head in here but i was wondering if any of you had done a post bac program, or any cont. education. as i mentioned before i am currently on the alternate list for ccom, i just signed a lease and im moving to chicago next weekend, and if not taken off the alternate list will be taking some of the med classes as a continuing student...my porblem is that the cost of living is so high in chicago that my finances will only allow me to take 9 credit hours a semester and still live and eat. Will the adcom look down upon a student only taking 9 hours a semester...will they understand that as a post-bac student i am financially strapped? any advice greatly appreciated !!!!
thanks

Adam - I'm coming to the BBQ-looking forward to it.

Audrey - I would drink wine or beer. Beer seems more like a BBQ beverage than wine, so maybe we should go with that. I would definitely be willing to bring some.

Todd

Audrey:

Yes I am bringing Adrianne!! 🙂 Also, we both will probably drink, so count us in for chipping in some $$. Also, I don't know when exactly, but we are still interested in meeting up with you and Adam in downtown Naperville before school starts. It will probably be after Aug 15th as this is when I am done with work and I have 2 weeks to myself  Anyway, we can talk more about that at the BBQ.

Todd:

Glad to hear it. I cannot wait to meet everyone in person!! 🙂

I hope every one has a great day!!!!!!!

Hey Hoosier...I feel for you. I hope you end up getting in and all of these worries will be gone.

As far as post-bac programs, I did one at the University of Southern California. I also took extra science classes at UCLA.
And USC was very expensive, but I knew I just had to do it.

Hey Adam and Aaron-

I will most definitely be at the BBQ. Looking forward to it. PM me with what I should bring, or e-mail, too. Also, my AIM screenname is mbbrown02. Really original, eh?
