Hey Guys -

It has been a while since I have tried to start a thread for our future class. I feel like now most of our class has been decided and I was wondering if anyone is interested in keeping this thread going. I was thinking of just a little info from everyone! Let's keep this one going so come Sept. 3rd we will all know just a little more about each other.

My name is Adam. I live in Manhattan, IL. I am a soon to be 24y/o, and just this last February I got engaged. I am currently working in an emergency room as an orderly/phleb/ortho tech, and I hope to one day persue my medical career in the field of emergency medicine. Anyway, this is a little tidbit of who I am and I can not wait to learn more about the people I will spend the next four years, at least, of my life with. I truly feel blessed that I was given an opportunity to follow my dream, and I could not be more excited to be attending my top choice of schools.

To sum up, I hope this thread continues and that everyone who is still waiting to hear back from the ad com gets what they wish for!! 🙂

Have a great day and enjoy the time off we still have!! 🙂

Hey Adam......

I think I was the first to post on your last CCOM class of 2007 thread!

Nothing has changed about me....lol

I thought the first day of school is Sept. 1st though, not Sept. 3rd. I think the entire week of the 1st is orientation week. And that the actual first day of classes is September 8th. ( I haven't looked at a calendar though ). I did find out that the White Coat Ceremony is on Sept. 26th. That is important for family and friends who might be coming.

Does anyone know when move-in day is for the dorms? I will be driving to Chicago with a friend from Los Angeles, and I need to know when to leave! 🙄

I think we are supposed to hear from the housing office sometime in April.

Take care, and let's keep this thread going.

Hey there guys...well im not official yet...im still a wannabe CCOMer...my fate is yet to be decided by the ad com.

My name is Tovah, and I currently live in Louisville, Kentucky...grew up on the east coast...graduated from Indiana University last may and I am currently working in the ER as a Unit Secretary. As mentioned I have NOT heard from the ad com...post interview. I interviewed two days ago and everything went awesome...so im anxiously camped out by my mailbox. If accepted there will be no other consideration of any other schools...so if given the chance i will most definitely be a CCOMer...ill keep ya updated

Hey everyone!
I'll be joining all of you at CCOM this fall! Like Adam, I'm from Manhattan, IL. Strange! Actually, Adam, I indirectly know you through April who works with you in the ER! Small world! I don't know what area I want to work in, I'll have it figured out when I need too. I play all sports and can't wait for intramurals at CCOM! I don't know what else to say, I guess just that I can't wait to meet everyone!
See ya!
Katrina😀

SM-UCLA Tech:

Hello, I wanted to let u know that from what I heard we cannot move into apartments/dorms until the day right before orientation. 🙁 Also, you are correct in saying that the first day of class is 9/8/03, but I am pretty sure the first day of orientation is 9/3/03 (not soon enough 🙁 ) because of that Monday being Labor Day. Please let me know if I am posting incorrect dates. Thank you very much and I hope this info facilitates your move from Cali!!!!

PS: Thanks for the White Coat Ceremony date, that is very helpful for me!! 🙂

HoosierDO:

Best of luck with the ad com! If CCOM is where you are meant to be, then I believe we will all get the opportunity top meet you come orientation!! 🙂

Katrina:

Hello! I am so glad u posted because I keep forgetting to tell April to tell you that if u ever see me in Manhattan (that is if u know who I am 🙂) to please come up and introduce yourself. I would love to meet some of the people I will be going with to medical school!! Anyway, I hope u are enjoying your time off and if our paths never cross until September, have a great summer!!! 🙂

I just wanted to let everyone out there know that I'll be in Chicago the Thursday before Memorial Day for one week. If anyone would like to get together, let me know. It would be great to meet some of you.

PM me if you are interested.

By for now 🙂

P.S. I hope you get in HoosierDO !

I guess I will have to add to this thread.

My name is Paul and I will be attending CCOM in the fall. I'm 21 and am from a little town in southwest missouri called Carthage (born and raised in Missoula, MT though) and I'm currently attending school, working as an orderly in the local ER (not for much longer if the days continue like they do 😡 .. j/k) and working as a surgical scrub in the surgery department.

Right now my interest is orthopedic surgery, but who knows what it will be in 4 years. I look forward to meeting some, if not all of you in the fall.

P.S. Thanks for the white coat ceremony date.

Hi guys,

My name is Amena and I'll be a fellow CCOMer......I'm a Chicago girl, born and raised here 🙂 .... I'm really excited to meet all of you ... I was wondering where everyone in my class was, so I'm glad Adam started this thread....

HoosierDO,
I interviewed on 3/28. We were told that the admissions committee wouldn't meet until the 3rd week in april and we'd find out around the first week of May. When did they say that your applications would be reviewed? I hope that they were over estimating the time that they would take. Good luck and keep us posted about when you find out their decision..i'm sure it will be an acceptance. Hopefully i'll get an acceptance also. 🙂

Hey everyone-
Just wanted to say congratulations to everyone who will be attending CCOM next year! I think you will be very happy with your decision. But enjoy your time before school starts while you can.

And of course, as always I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have. Feel free to post them on this thread or email me.

claymore,
I had a couple of questions....
1. where are the 3rd year core rotation sites? Are the sites for all of the rotations or are cetain cites for certain rotations?
2. how are students matched up for each site/rotation (lottery, etc).
3. is there some sort of board review program through the school for the COMLEX 1?
4. Do you have a copy of the 2001 match results. During my interview we got the 2002 results, but i'd like to see some other years results.

I think that's about it...oh some of the students that gave us tours mentioned that right now you guys are having tests every monday and friday? What was your schedule like during your first two quarters? What was the testing schedule like.
thank you
Jenny

Jenny-
Good questions. I can't answer them all since I am but an MS-1 but I can let you know what I've heard.

1. Core rotations are at a variety of places in and around Chicago. There is some flexibility as to where you rotate, although you are a bit more restricted during third year (fourth year has more electives). Some of the main hospitals students rotate through are: St James/Olympia Fields, Cook County, Christ, Lutheran General, Resurrection, and Michael Reese. Keep in mind there are many others and if there is a place you really want to rotate, it is my understanding that you will have the opportunity. Many people will do an elective at one or more of the other area medical school hospitals including UIC, Rush, Loyola, or Northwestern.

2. I'm not really sure; you are allowed to put in your list of "preferences" but they essentially match you up using their own methods. You can generally swap with your classmates.

3. 3rd quarter of second year is pretty light academically, so there is much more time to study for boards. I believe Kaplan does come to campus and offers a class (for a fee), but I could be wrong.

4. I do not have the match results from 2 years ago, only last year's. Perhaps if you contact the admissions office they can help.

5. The schedule 1st and 2nd quarter were similar to ours now, tests on Mondays and Fridays (not every week). Each quarter is 11 weeks including finals, with an average of about 20 tests/quarter. It is intense but manageable, b/c each test covers less material. And, I can't think of any school that gets a longer summer break than us (almost 4 months)!

Sorry I couldn't help more, your questions would be better answered by an MS-2 or older. Anything else regarding the first 2 years though and I can help more.

Claymore gave a pretty good response. Let me try to add a few things to help.

This is the second year that we are matched up with a lottery for our rotations. You make your choices on computer, based on the available sites, preceptors, for each service (Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, etc). There are different choices for each service. We cannot choose any rotation from the same list of hospitals, but are limited based on the available hospital choices for that rotation. For example, we could rotate at Illinois Masonic, but only for general surgery (or, of course, as an elective). You can also specify that you want to stick to certain locations within the Chicago area, or that distant sites are okay (Indiana and Michigan). CCOM's main hospital is St. James/Olympia Fields - you can do almost any rotation there.

There are a limited number of spots for each site.

Also, realize that the choices and sites change all the time. The office of clinical education is always working on adding new sites, and the choices change throughout the year, and will change by the time you are ready for rotations.

Your electives can be done anywhere. The preceptor must be willing to let other CCOM students do a rotation there, however.

There is no formal "board review program" through the school. Kaplan is being offered on site for a fee. CCOM does, however, have an excellent end of the year summary of all drugs with Pharmacology, and also goes through COMLEX questions in Practice of Medicine.

Hope that helps.

I too will probably be at CCOM in the fall. I am still waiting to hear from 2 schools but I would be so happy to end up at CCOM. For those who are 1st and 2nd year students...and also all of you who are starting in the fall, where are you planning on living? On campus/off campus, which town? I am from Boston and do not know the Chicago area at all...any help would be wonderful!

Thanks🙂

Hello. I hope you do decide to join us all this fall!! To answer your question, I am planning on living in the on-campus apartments. I feel that being close to school is always a plus! Besides, from my research on housing in the Downers Grove area, I found it to be a little expensive for my liking. This is my opinion; maybe someone else can be of more help. Also, on my interview I was able to tour the dorms and from what I saw they did not seem half bad! Anyway, I hope this helps a little, and remember to keep CCOM at the top of your list!! 🙂

i plan on living off campus. i was wondering if anyone had any info on apartments in the area. actually, i would prefer to get a furnished apartment because it would be much easier to move and all. anyone know of any decent places that are furnished. i could prolly afford up to 900 a month for a 1 bedroom. dont really have a preference as to where, except that it is between chicago and downers grove. i checked out rent.com, but there is no search option for furnished apartments. any others that are reccommended. does ccom have an apartment guide available if i call? sorry about all the random questions, i just really hate typing and all. any info that could steer me is appreciated. thanks again.

SM-UCLA tech -

How's it going? I think getting together when you come to Chi-town is a great idea. I went to school at UIC for two years and my brother and my fiance's brother and cousin all live downtown and in Lincoln Park, so I have a "few" places in mind where we could all have some fun together and get to know each other a little better. This is exactly why I have tried so hard to set up a thread that a lot of people would and will continue responding!! 🙂 I think knowing people who are anxious to take this journey with us will only provide us with a class that defines cooperation and closeness; two traits I believe to be very important in a medical school class!! Anyway, I hope we all really do get together and if anyone is really interested post it here and leave a message where we can all find out each others' cell numbers!! What a way to spend Memorial Day; getting a jump start on orientation (a trait fitting of a future med student!! 🙂) Talk to you all soon, I have to finish up in the ER before I clock out! See ya!!

Hi everyone!

I am going to be joining you in the fall at CCOM. I cannot wait to meet all of my classmates! 🙂

I just got my housing assignment (2nd floor Traditional Single in complex B). I tried to get a room in LLC, but no such luck. Oh well. Where are all the rest of you living?

Talk to you later!

NUgirl -

Hello. First of all congratulations on your acceptance!! Second, when exactly did you receive your housing assignment, and when did you turn in your application? Thanks in advance for your reply!! 🙂 Have a great day!

Hi Adam,

Congrats to you too!

I got my housing assignment on Mon or Tues, and I turned it in in the middle of Feb (I forgot the exact date). If you haven't received it yet, you probably will sometime this week or early next week. I hope you get your first choice!

Hey guys...sorry to but in but i was wondering what the protocol is for "post interview thank you letters"...anyone do them...are they good to send, bad to send etc? thanks in advance...as mentioned earlier i interviewed at ccom last week just wanted to know before i send one. thanks

HoosierDO -

I never sent any thank you cards and was accepted. I heard and read a lot about them, but for some reason or another I never got around to sending them. Also, I have spoken to many who have been accepted and they did not send them either. I hope this helps!! 🙂 Anyway, good luck, and I hope you will be joing us this fall!!!!

NUgirl -

Thanks for the info. I did receive my assignment. Unfortunately, I did not get my first choice. I was placed in the LLC and my first choice was an apartment. Anyway, the housing is the least of my worries, I am just elated to be starting medical school at CCOM in 4 months and 30 days:clap:. By the way though, if any one was placed in the apartments and realize now that they would rather live in the dorms (I know it's a long shot) I would still be very interested in switching. Just let me know, thanks!!

Hey Mandy,

How did you find out about the special reception? What is it for and what kind of reception is it?

Hey Guys -

I am certainly planning on attending the special reception! I think this is a great opportunity for some of us to meet finally! For those of us who did not yet receive the postcard here it is:

I'll try to go. Since I live up here anyway it will be easy.

We should all post pics of each other or something!

For those of you who are IL residents do you know by when and how we show proof of residency(for instate tuition)? Do we have to fill out some application? Thanks!!! 🙂

Looks like I won't be able to make it, that's right before finals week for me. 😡

I also have a question for all my fellow CCOM classmates, why did you choose CCOM??

I chose it b/c the school is awesome. I liked the students I met and I liked everything I saw on the tour. The rotations look awesome and my fiancee lives in chicago. Overall everything at CCOM fit for me and i can't imagine going anywhere else.

Hey Adam....I will definitely let everyone know when i'm coming out to Chicago in May. I didn't get an invitation to the reception. I assume it went out to the in-state students.

I did get my housing assignment on yesterday. Offhand, I think it said I was in Building A of the Traditional Dorms. I requested the Traditional dorms over the LLC because I heard that a lot of the returning students were requesting them becuase of the remodeling???

NUgirl -

If I remember correctly, unfortunately I do not think one can go from out-of-state to in-state tuition because you must work at least two years in Illinois before you can obtain residency.🙁 I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure out-of-staters stay with their original tuition! If this is info for you, I hope I am wrong though, but I hope this helps you out.

Rev. Horace -

I chose CCOM for many reasons:

1) Reputation of an outstanding school dedicated to producing doctors with a vast knowledge of the osteopathic profession and trandition.

2) I have worked with 4 graduates of CCOM for the past 5 years in the ER, and since these guys are outstanding in their specialty, I really wanted to follow in their footsteps.

3) I have a really close family and a new fiance who I would and will do anything to keep them as close to me as possible for the remainder of my years.

4) At my interview, the campus was everything I wanted it to be, the students were in love with the school, and the comradery they had for each other was inspiring.

5) Because of their reputation, I figured it might be a great place to graduate from when registering for the Match.

These seem to be my top 5 reasons for choosing CCOM, although there are more but I don't have time right now because I have to go to bed. One thing I will love about CCOM is that once I am there I will not have to "work" any more night shifts for a couple of years!!!

PS: My pic can be found on my website under "My Pics" then "NAH 002". Also, we need more of us to go to the reception 🙂

Hi Adam,

Thanks for your response about in-state tuition.

Are you sure though that you have to have worked in IL for two years? I was born and raised in Chicago my whole life. I have never lived anywhere else. How can I not claim IL residency? It seems extremely strange to me if I have to pay out of state tuition when I'm not out of state.

When I got my acceptance packet to NOVA, they included in it an app to claim residency. All you had to do was fill it out and show proof thru a driver's license, bank statements, etc. Does CCOM not have this? 😕

NU Girl-
If you have lived in Chicago and paid Illinois state taxes for your whole life, of course you are an in-state resident! The 2 years of working in Illinois is only if you haven't lived here prior to that. I can't remember exactly what they ask for as far as proof, but it's pretty simple. I grew up in Chicago, went to college in another state, and certainly didn't work in IL for two years, and I am considered a resident. So you will have no problem.

NUgirl -

I am sorry for the confusion. I miss read your post; I read it as though you were not from IL and you were going to move here to go to CCOM! As Claymore stated, you have nothing to worry about. I am pretty sure that all you have to do is sign your name to a form that states your residency!! Hope this helps do away with any confusion!

Guys -

I am definitely going to the reception! 🙂

Thanks Adam and Claymore for the replies. Adam, have you filled out a form or have you received one yet? I just don't want to miss the deadline, (b/c Nova's was April 15th) if there is one for CCOM.

The reception sounds like fun! I'll try and make it too. It'll be nice to meet those of you going!!!!! 🙂

NUgirl -

If I were you, I would just call the FinAid office and make sure that they do not already list you as an IL resident. If they do then you are set; if not, I am sure that they will happily send you the form to fill out. The form I filled out was given to me right when I got to the interview. I am pretty sure I filled it out when I was in the lobby right outside the library. You must have filled one out when you interviewed, no? Anyway, if not, just call FinAid and I am sure everything will work out just fine. See ya!!

Again, thanks Adam! Once you mentioned it, I remember signing a form saying that I was an IL resident at the interview too. I'll do as you suggest and call the financial aid office tomorrow just to make sure though. 🙂

I was just curious if any of you have decided what area of medicine you'd like to practice in. Right now my preference is ortho. 😉

Paul

Rev. Horace -

I am 99.99999% sure that I will choose emergency medicine as my specialty. I like EM because of a cuople reasons:

1. I can realistically have a "true" family life. If I practice in the suburbs, I will be able to do shift work and when I am home I am home.

2. My mind loves spontaneity, fast paces, and quick decision making. Therefore, we (EM and I) seem like a perfect fit!! 🙂

3. I have worked in an ER for the past five years and to me I just seem to fit there. Plus, the DOs I work with truly are an example of what I believe patients like more about DOs over MDs (please do not take this is a bash on MDs, my father and grandfather both are MDs). By this I mean, many patients that complete our surveys always seem to mention the DOs and how caring they were and are. I do believe, however, this is not only a trait a DO can have but I am a believer that physicians taught by a mentor/professor who truly believes in and teaches the osteopathic philosophy tend to be more patient-orientated! Anyway, I hope I did not confuse anyone or make people think I am a MD-hater. These are only my humble opinions! So have a good night and talk to you guys later!! 🙂

To all the soon to be first years:

Welcome to the CCOM family, and if you have any questions for a soon to be third year, just ask away.

Greetings....In an attempt to increase communication between all current and incoming CCOM students, a forum has been created to allow students to communicate about classes, post classified information such as housing, roommate openings and books for sale, etc. etc. (inspired by medstudents.net)

As of now, the website is in its prelim stages and any feedback would be of great value. Furthermore, this website is maintained on a non-profit basis. Eventually, a donation system will be included in the classified section and all funds will be used to help jump start the student run clinic that is in the works.

Thanks for your time and if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. The web forum is very easy to use and the help menu should answer all of your technical questions. Once again, this site is for everyone so if you have any ideas that would make it more functional, please share.

Kevin Boyd MS-1

To Current CCOMers -

I was wondering if there are any current CCOMers that will be attending the special reception downtown chicago on April 25th, or if there are any of you who have attended one of these in the past? Just wondering what one might expect if they go. From what it sounds like, it seems that it should be a pretty fun and informative time. Anyway, any info from my soon to be upper classmen would be very appreciated!! Thanks in advance!! 🙂

Hello all,
This message board is great. You all are great. I'm going to miss you all so much after graduation. 🙁 hmm, perhaps i'm getting ahead of myself.
In any case, My name is Casey. I'm from ann arbor Michigan (Go Blue) and I'm currently taking a nice long break before I actually have to learn something important. I'm 22 years young and I've been working as an Aide in Surgery for the past 4 years. Blah, Blah, Blah. I shouldn't tell you all about myself now or we won't have anything to talk about once orientation rolls around.
I'm looking foward to going to CCOM. My only reservation is the massive amount of goose poo all over campus. It makes for difficult walking. Oh, the cafeteria rocks. That was really my deciding factor. If i'm going to pay $30,000 for this education, then i'm going to eat $30,000 worth of ice cream. Yeah, i'm up for the challenge.
Hey, anyone interested in starting a Ska band? I'm in one now and i'm going to have to quit at the end of September.
I'm so long winded.
My girlfriend of 6 years and myself will be moving to the chicago area, probably in August. oh, and our cat.
I'm looking forward to meeting you all. I still can't believe i'm going to be a doctor. What were they thinking?

oh, and if you see me, ask me to do the trick with my scapula. I can make both of them stick out of my back. its great for parties and making friends.

Hey everyone......

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a fin. aid question.

If I lease a new car now, how will that affect my financial aid packet? Will it limit how much I can borrow, or will it just affect the rate I get?

Thanks
