CCOM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Okay I just got an e-mail back that my app is waiting to be reviewed. There's no timeline really and the apps are reviewed based on when they were complete.

I recieved an invite (snail mail) about 5 or 6 weeks after I sent my secondary in. It looks like you've got a while to wait, which is always the worst part.

has anyone else found out that they got into ccom through the azcom matriculation agreement?

if you interviewed on 10/23 or that week, check your status on the Interact Now MWU webpage...i was accepted this morning...goodluck!!!!!

I was curious as to what the professors at CCOM were like. Do most of them have an open door policy where if you have a question you can stop by to ask or are they so busy with research they don't have time for the students? Also, I know some schools have mentor programs with a faculty member and a second year. Does CCOM have anything similar to this?

EEL08, I'm complete too -- but why in the world does it take a month to hear back? I thought there were less people applying to DO-schools, so the process should go faster -- right? Doesn't the AACOMAS site say only 1 in 4 are DO-doctors; so by that logic we should have 1/4 the applicant-pool, and a faster process! Am I missing something, folks?

However, also 1/4 the number of schools (I think closer to 1/5 actually).

At CCOM the professors do have open door policies. We have big sibs and we have a faculty memeber mentor. My mentor is great we have had lunch and had several meetings. She really makes sure that I (and other students) are getting along okay. CCOM is commited to helping the student.

Does CCOM record their lectures and put them online as a podcast or anything?

Or do they have a scribe service where somebody takes notes in class and you have the option of purchasing those notes?

Is there any student-run online forum where students can share notes, study guides, etc?

Thanks!

Most depatments have notes that they give you or that you buy at the beginning of each quarter, and they really are complete, menaing that you do not need a textbook. Power point lectures are put on Blackboard, but there is no recording of lectures.

Marica,

do any of the profs allow you to record their lectures for personal use?

P.S. Thanks!

I think most do, but you just have to get permission.

to whoever wrote on my MDapps, honestly, regardless of YOUR stats, I do feel I have a chance at this school.

Don't worry about the jerks! You do have a good chance. It's my top choice too, and I have similar stats. I'm still waiting for my LOR's to get there, but hopefully we will both get interviews soon!

Good luck to you!

thanks 🙂 i posted a comment on your mdapps too!!

Does Midwestern have a certain day they will accept calls for application status checks? I was complete Oct 16th, but haven't heard anything from them since. I tried searching the forums, but came up empty-handed. Thanks for the info!

It's looking like I'm going to be releasing my acceptance back out into the world in a day or so. I like the school, but its looking like I will most likely be attending MSUCOM over CCOM. Hopefully this will hope one of you guys out!

good luck! :luck::luck::luck:

I just think they are swamped. I have called a couple times and they always ask to call me back. It is just a busy time of year. Some other schools have been like this and I just gave it some time and called back. When I did that, I got through and they gave me updates.

I called right before Thanksgiving and they said they don't do status checks over the phone. I was told I could e-mail and they would get back to me as soon as they could.

I officially gave up my seat this week. It was a tough one. Hope all you people waiting or on the wait list have some good news for the holidays!! Good luck everyone!! :luck::luck:

Does anyone know if CCOM takes people off the post interview waitlist at the end of the cycle or monthly? And does anyone have advice on how to get off the alternate list?

For those of you who are deciding not to go to CCOM, would you care to share your reason(s) with us? 🙂

For those of you who are deciding not to go to CCOM, would you care to share your reason(s) with us? 🙂

I 2nd this request.

I have an acceptance at KC and DMU so far, but have an opportunity to interview at CCOM. I'm not sure if I want to withdraw my app or go over there and check it out. Things are becoming expensive...

My reasons for giving up my seat are personal family and finance issues. I got into another school that was closer to home and in an area I can afford a little easier. It's complicated so I won't bore you with details! Money talk is no fun.

I will say this though.....I LOVED CCOM. I haven't seen KC or DMU so I can't comment but I think you should check out CCOM if you are not absolutely set on a school yet.

Everything about the school was amazing in my opinion: campus setting, location to Chicago (close but not too close to be distracting), the people, and the rotations sites for 3rd and 4th year.

Go check out the school. It will be worth it.

My reasons are very similar to Doc11hopeful's. At the time I interviewed with CCOM, I hadn't been accepted to any school yet. I am a Michigan resident, so when I received my acceptance from MSUCOM I naturally was drawn to it do to it being my UG, close to family, friends and GF (important factor), and the price per year for tuition was about 1/2 that of CCOM.

Its actually pretty funny because the whole interview one of my interviewers kept asking me why I would go to CCOM over MSU (I guess I pulled it off). At the time I would have gone anywhere and I must say, CCOM is a wonderful school. They have a nice anatomy lab and the campus is really nice. The clinical opprotunities you will get here are arguable one of the best DO schools, with 28 or so affiliated hospitals in Chicago and the surrounding areas. But this is all stuff you can read about on their website.

I can say all the great things about the school, but Im sure there are people who are interested in why I chose not to go. I didnt like the fact that they were tearing down the gym. I know this is a minor thing, but I still like to work out. They DO have a basketball gym and a small weight room elsewhere on campus, but it felt a little cramped. Also, due to the fact that this is a graduate institution, there are alot of students filling the library. This is also evident in some of the classes that you share with pharmacy and PT students. Now I know MSU shares classes with the MD medical school, but I feel we are there for the same things. The dorms they have in campus felt more prisonlike than most, but I wouldn't have lived on campus anyway. As you can tell, most of my reason were for the student comfort factors. When it still comes down to it, this is a great school! I feel very fortunate to have been accepted, and would not have had a problem attending here. If I wasnt accepted to MSUCOM right now, I would be sending in my deposit.

Hope this helps someone!:luck:

Im still waiting to hear back from my state schools..and have some more interviews, but as of now Im going to CCOM and sending my deposit in soon. Do you guys know where most of the students live..those who choose to live off campus. Id like to live in an apartment in downer's grove close to the school, so I was just seeing if anyone knew anything about that! thanks

How long does it take for CCOM to imput your stuff into their system. I keep checking their interact now program and they still don't have my stuff in there. At the very least I would think my LOR's would be in there because they were sent 2 weeks ago. Do you think they'll be in there soon? I'm thinking they might be a little backed up so I'll wait a bit longer to see.

I'll be living off-campus. If you're looking for a REALLY nice apartment complex, check "City View Apartments" at 2720 Highland Ave. It's about 1.2 miles from school, but it's technically in the city of Lombard.

I don't feel like throwing away $40,000 in rent just to end up with nothing, so I'll be buying a condo in conjunction with my parents. You can look at downtown Downers Grove, which is about 2.5 miles south of the school. There's a few newer condo buildings such as "Acadia on the Green" and "The Station." The town is quiet. Real close to the train station though, which goes right through the heart of the IL Medical District in Chicago.

I'll be living in Lombard (1.5 miles north of the school) at a condo building called "Fountain Square." There's a few other older condo buildings in the vicinity of Yorktown Mall (Highland Avenue/22nd Street/Butterfield Rd) as well.

Check out this map I made if you're not familiar with the area. Hope it helps!

I have the same question! Thanks, PianoRock11, for sharing some apt/condo names 🙂 V helpful!

Does CCOM help its students find off-campus housing or are we sort of on our own? Given the fact that it's in the suburbs, does that affect average rent? More importantly, what is the average rent in that area? How does one find roommates? I DEFINITELY would prefer off-campus, mostly because the idea of living in a dorm again sans kitchen is less than appealing.

thank you painorock..very helpful! i will def. look into these if i do go to ccom

Just as a reminder, in case you weren't aware, CCOM has a few on-campus APARTMENTS (not dorms) that are very new and pretty nice, from what I understand. I talked to the housing lady about this and she said the rent (if you live alone) is anywhere from $900-1500 per month, and it is representative of the area.

So although I haven't fully explored the renting situation since I'm looking at condos, expect rent to be in the $1000 range if you live alone, maybe a little less if you have a roommate. Which, by the way, is insane considering you're in a suburb of Chicago. Hopefully you can find something a little cheaper.

Go to www.google.com/maps and type in "apartments in downers grove" or "apartments in lombard." The school is in Downers Grove, but it's right on the border of Lombard. It gives you real listings linked to a location, so you can see how close they are to the school. 👍

in my opinion, the "apartments" are disgusting.i have a friend who got duped into signing a contract for one, and he is seriously regretting it. they are incredibly old and rundown, pretty nasty and overpriced. in the redwood dorms there are "suites" available that have a living area, a bedroom, and seperate bathroom, etc. those are pretty nice though.

city view at the highlands gives a pretty nice discount to CCOM students, i believe something like 860 for a one bed...they are really nice. google "city view at the highlands" in lombard , il

While I haven't been renting in a while, rent in the Chicago suburbs 7 years ago was 1250/mo for a 2br place. I think that in the $1000 range would be reasonable for the Downers Grove area, which is one of the nicer burbs. You may find cheaper if you go a bit further from the school like Lombard or west like Lisle.

Does anyone know Michael Laken's email?

I too withdrew from CCOM, folks. I was accepted at U of I. I won't have to move, the tuition is many orders of magnitude lower, and I'm a Graduate College alumnus with friends still there. Was an easy decision, although CCOM did make a heck of an impression on me when I interviewed there!

Good luck to those waiting for good news!

I lived in one of the on campus apartments in 1997 and let me tell you it was a ****hole. I can't remember the details, but they have those window air conditioners, except they were placed in the wall instead of window. Anyway, can't remember how this happened, but the air conditioner unit got pulled out in the middle of winter by maintenance or construction or something. And it was 3 feet from my bed. They covered up the hole with a garbage bag! I was freaking freezing! This lasted for a week or so...I mean, what semi decent apartment complex in the midwest would allow for a gaping hole to exist in somebody's bedroom in the middle of winter for even more than a few hours?!

I got out of those apartments stat. Worst place I ever lived. I'm sorry I can't remember more details, it was the first year of med school and I've repressed how miserable I was from all the studying. I was too busy studying and taking tests to worry too much about the hole in my wall...one of the worst years of my life, I honestly have repressed much of that time but remember hating those apartments...what a rip off. GO OFF CAMPUS!

Regarding going in-state (MSUCOM) vs. CCOM, VERY VERY SMART MOVE! The debt you guys will accrue through medical school is going to be HUGE and you should do it as cheaply as possible. If I could have stayed for in-state tuition I would have. Plus, MSUCOM is a great school...you won't miss out on much.

good luck karizma!

Does anyone know if the ADCOM will take a look at the post-interview alternative list ppl? I find it really interesting that qualified applicants who interviewed early are being put on the alternative list and at the same time the ADCOM is extending interviews to 3.1/low 20's MCAT students..not that i'm hating 🙂

Hey my MCAT is in the low 20's and I'm not getting any love yet from CCOM just in case that makes you feel any better. 😉

My first time applying, my MCAT and GPA are in the mid 20's and 3.1 range.

I'm not sure why i got taken off that pre - interview waitlist - maybe my extracurrics stood out, my M.S, research, who knows. I know that i called and called and updated and made it known that CCOM was my top choice. Usually i think the students who get interviews with lower end stats ( such as mine ) are ones that are local and CCOM knows will most likely matriculate....

i think.

in any case, i believe they mentioned in the interview that there is no alternate list movement until spring time...so good luck!

Wait, you got an interview? Last I knew you were on the pre-interview waitlist so maybe I'm just not up-to-date.

hey, yeah, i got taken off the waitlist last friday , and then given an interview on monday. From what I can conceive the interview went very well, but you never really know in these types of situations...plus i guess a good interview doesnt necessarily = an acceptance at CCOM. the committee has to review your file, looks at MCAT, GPA, and interview scores, then makes a decision based on that. they have been placing people on the alternate list like crazy this year so who knows what will happen.

the ADCOM meets on thursday i think, so keep your fingers crossed for me. CCOM is my top choice so if i get in i will be able to relax for the rest of the year! If not, i will be bummed out indefinitely 🙁

Well congrats!! I know you were pretty bummed about being put on the pre-interview waitlist. That was fast though, I'm guessing you live in the Chicago area. What exactly were all the things you did to try to get off the waitlist? I'm going to have to do the same thing pretty soon. I will definitely keep my fingers crossed for you! :luck:

Well I just got my rejection letter from CCOM. I've figured out nothing good comes in the mail anymore. I told my husband I'm doing us a favor by narrowing down the number of schools we have to think about. Well good luck to everyone else! :luck:

hey, so sorry to hear that. it's just such a crapshoot..your stats seem fine for CCOM, its their loss!

good luck on hearing back from LMU and getting more interview love 👍

did anyone who interviewed at the end of november/early december get a call yet?? adcom was supposed to let people know today in the afternoon sometime...it's about 115 chicago time and no call yet for me....sigh..i feel impending doom 🙁
