I just received my acceptance letter in the mail today. 😍

BTW, my interactive account never did change to a "congratulations" screen, so maybe that does not happen in every case.

My letter was postmarked the 2nd. Good Luck to everyone still waiting.
 
Alternate list! That's ok. I'm going to give up the spot anyways, just hurts my ego a little.
 
anyone know when they stop interviewing?? did anybody do anything that they called you for an interview? I'll do just about anything..

thanks everyone.. apparently it was a really nice rejection letter as well (my mom read it to me over the phone) about how hard i tried and the amount of effort i put in to making my file as complete as possible.. hrm. blah. i cried a bit today.. well quite a bit.. but i guess that isn't what god wants for me..
 
Sorry to hear the unfortunate news TIYL, but you'll be laughing about this next winter when it is 80 degrees in Florida and the people in Chicago are weathering another winter like this last year's. Also, there is alot of opportunity available in Bradenton for physicians. I don't know if you drove around Lakewood Ranch but there is so much opportunity for development in that area. If you don't want to stay in Florida, you can always come back to the Chi for residency. I got waitlisted at CCOM (I'm from Chicago as well) and although it hurt a little bit, I figured I'd rather go to a school that wants me there than a school who isn't interested in me. Keep your head up!!!

Yeah...TIYL...it sounds like they customized a rejection letter for you--it's over and time to start focusing on the positives of the school you will be going to. At some point you've got to listen to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young:

hey guys i interviewed on april 4 2008...did anybody else who interviewed that day hear anything back from the admissions team!! =) i am so anxious to hear back from them!! do you guys think i should just call them or wait it out? i am feeling RIDICULOUSLY hopeful even though my chances are slim and my stats are in the lower end....advice/suggestions/...totally welcome. 🙂

They only meet once/month, so you probably won't hear back until May unless they finish up interviews early. I hate to say it, but I think that they're pretty much full now, so you may be getting an alternate spot at this point.
 
Hi! I have a few questions that maybe someone can give me some insight on....

1. I got into CCOM and AZCOM, and whereas it is awesome that I have this decision, I am completely torn between the two, because I love both for different reasons. Has anyone been in this situation, a similar situation, or does anyone have any insight to help me choose? I have to make a decision and put money down ASAP.

2. Also, I have never lived in Chicago, nor do I know anyone currently attending CCOM or that has attended. Does anyone know of any nice, popular apartment complexes to look into that Midwestern students tend to live in? Also, do most people that start CCOM not knowing anyone tend to get 1 bedroom apartments and live by themselves? I am a fun (or at least i think so, haha) 22 yr old female, and I have always lived with friends throughout undergrad, so would prefer to find a roommate, but dont know how to start going about doing this or finding an apartment, any suggestions?

1) I mean, you came to the CCOM thread...I think you'll find a pretty biased reaction here 🙂.

I think CCOM has a better national reputation but it really depends on what your career goals are. I've never seen an AZCOM match list so I don't know how they generally get people into specialties or where they do it. CCOM tends to get a lot of people (relatively) into allopathic residencies in a diverse amount of specialties that tend to be in the Chicago and Illinois area. Like I said, I think they tend to have a pretty good national reputation so people end up all over, but if you're set on the west coast, I think you might be better off going to AZCOM (though, like I said, I've never seen their match lists so who knows).

2) I'm of similar age and male and planning on living in the dorms on campus to solve this first year. I think it's cost-effective (to live in the old ones), convenient (obvious), and good for social/community aspects.

Some people have been living out of apartments since sophomore year and simply can't go back though (or have families--yikes!!). If you fall into that, yes, I'd either get a 1br/studio apt or go to previously linked-on-this-thread facebook group and seek out some people there. Another idea might be to go to the osteopathic class threads and ask some current students from the class of 2011 or 2010 there.

I get the vibe you're leaning CCOM from your post--hope to see you there in the fall!
 
Thanks for your response Bond! Yes, I definitely was leaning toward CCOM when I posted that, but I made my final decision, and I decided to go to CCOM, so I will definitely see you there in the fall! Im glad I finally made the decision, because I have been contemplating it for awhile, and my deposit is due today!

I tried to look for the facebook group, and although I dont really know how to work facebook that well, I found a group with 7 members in it and a post that said there was another "real" group with more members? Do you know anything about this? I want to start meeting people, haha. Thanks!

I was just wondering if you would share your thoughts that led you to pick CCOM over AZCOM? I am facing the same choice that you had and it's a tough one. I'm also curious to hear where you are from, if you're willing to share that.
 
Honestly, it took me a really long time to make the final decision. I thought about everything; location, closeness to family and friends, the reputation of the program, etc. I am from St. Louis and go to school at Indiana University, and although CCOM is closer to my immediate family and friends, I have a bunch of aunts and uncles that live in Phoenix. I absolutely love the Phoenix area, and have always wanted to live there, but Chicago is also an amazing city.

The decision really came down to which school I thought would give me the most opportunities once I graduated to do what I want to do. I want to specialize, and from the research I have been doing and from talking to people, I felt that CCOM would give me more opportunities to do this over AZCOM. I may be totally wrong in that, but it was just a feeling. Plus, Chicago is such a huge medical city, with so many hospitals and I liked how all the clinical rotations were well established throughout the chicago area. I also felt like CCOM has a really good national reputation. Dont get me wrong, I absolutely loved AZCOM, it has amazing board scores and all that, and I was really upset to turn the offer down, but overall I just felt that CCOM was a better choice for me. Hope this helps! What are you leaning towards and where are you from?

I wish I could at least tell you I'm leaning toward one of the schools but I can't. This is why I'm going crazy 😕

1st CCOM
I'm from Chicago so it's my home, my family is here, and my girlfriend seems to want to remain here. This school is well established after ~100 years of operation and many of the hospitals they are affiliated with are really nice. Hell, I was even born at one of them. Apparently they also have a national reputation!?!? (But I never heard of the school prior to considering DO schools). On the other hand...

I hate Downer's Grove and the surrounding area!! This is a problem b/c I really want to live close to the school I attend during the first two years. The campus just gave me an unsettling feeling and most of the people I saw there looked very VERY young! The weather here can be a huge pain too. Being from the Midwest you already know about the long dark winters, cold, and snow. Finally, although well established, the rotation sites are really mixed. I've worked in EMS for two years and have seen every hospital on the rotation list. You could win big or lose big. You could also get screwed really bad on the commute (Thanks to the extremely dense population of Chicago and the surrounding area, another negative). In all honesty I really do not know how much control students have over rotation sites but there is already a mandatory rotation site in Olympia Fields😡

This is the quick break down of CCOM. I'm going to do a second post on my AZ thoughts b/c I already had to retype this part.

I always thought they could never tell what "full" was until after May 15th, based on the amount of people putting their deposits down at that point?

Well, I think that they are only giving out alternate list spots at this time, could be wrong, but that was the impression that I got.
 
I applied to CCOM really late and just interviewed on april 10th. I was told directly by a representative at the admissions office that there were still open spots in the class and I called today and was told the same thing by some lady in the admissions office. I just thought I would let people know that there is still hope of getting an acceptance. Good luck to everyone.
 
I have no idea about the specifics of CCOM...but general med school wisdom is that even if a class is completely filled up (i.e. more than 175 people holding spots right now) they will:

1) Probably accept people until interviews are over. This number just drops exponentially as the year progresses, however. So an application that might have interviewed and gotten in in November, might not in late-April.

2) Continue to tell interviewees that there is room left in the class. It's pretty rare for a med school to straight up tell interviewees that they're interviewing for a spot on the alternate list, even if that were true.

Either way--my philosophy is that it is the way it is and there's nothing you can do to change how full the class is right now--so interview your best!
 
StopAsking....I figure that will happen with any school...some rotation spots will be awesome, and some will awful. I did not know many details about the hospitals that CCOM was affiliated with having never lived there and same with Phoenix. Having lived in Chicago and working EMS you obviously know more about the hospitals firsthand than I do.

I definitely feel you on the Midwest winters, but then again...I would NEVER want to concentrate and study with those mountains and sunshine everyday. I definitely like the weather in Phoenix, have visited family there a million times, but ultimately I decided to regard this as a more trivial influence in my decision and ultimately chose CCOM because I actually liked the surrounding area (although I was in a HUGE hurry that day...got the call to come interview the day before my interview and also had to race home for work after the interview), I felt it had a very good national rep from talking to other D.O.'s, and a significant amount of graduates get residencies in specialities which I want to do. Also, I could be totally wrong, but I got the feeling that AZCOM tends to "emphasize" family medicine more than CCOM, which is awesome if that is what you ultimately want to do, but I dont think I do.

Anyways, my decision was pretty much based on personal preference as opposed to other factors. I am curious as to what you ended up deciding to do (if you have made the decision), and if not...what are your thoughts since last time you posted?

Hello, I would just like to let everyone know that is currently on the alternate list that spots have started to open up. I just received my acceptance to CCOM off the alternate list today so many of you may also be hearing very soon. Just thought I would let people know.
 
how did u hear from them? email? phone call? and if you don't mind, when did you interview and what are your stats?

Did you do anything to increas your chances? LOI, additional letters, call frequently?

I interviewed in march and was waitlisted but I do have pretty high stats so I'm starting to get really 😕nervous because you interviewed after me.

I interviewed at the beginning of March and was recently accepted off the waitlist as well. I turned down the acceptance to attend PCOM. I hope someone here gets good news b/c of it.

hi all,
I'm a newbie so sorry if I make any mistakes!

I just got into CCOM a few days ago. 😀 I was placed on the alternate list after my interview Apr 10 (nymets I think I was at your interview). CCOM also called me the week before for an interview the next day, which I declined for a later one. After reading the forums, I'm getting the feeling that most if not all people that interviewed in March or April were put on the alternate list. It also seems to me that those that have been on the alternate list from those months are now getting in... So long story short, if you interviewed in march or april (april 11 was the last interview date) you'll probably be hearing soon if you haven't already.

I'm currently working on filling out all the paperwork, so if anyone has tips on that please share!
 
I just received my acceptance on Thursday. Keep your hopes up all.
