So, I have an acceptance to WVSOM 🙂

But I also have an interview invite at CCOM which I've scheduled for the second week of December...

For people who are qualified, which one of these schools wins in a fight to the death and why?

My initial impressions:

WVSOM:

Pros: Excellent faculty, simulated patients, anatomy lab👍 is amazing, students all seem to be down to earth

Cons: Location - rotations!?

CCOM:

Pros: Buildings appear new in video, stats seem higher on average (peers more motivated? - no flames please), location!!, excellent rotations (and subsequent residency matches..), did I mention CHICAGO!?

Cons: Far away from home (PA boy), some say interview is bad experience...

Please enlighten me. The DVD they send out is great!! I am really excited to interview at CCOM!!

But I am also thrilled about my acceptance to WVSOM 🙂

I think it is worth it to go out to CCOM. The interview is not too bad at all and everyone there is really nice. For me, my interviewers were just a bit more reserved then other schools to interact in conversation. They were not mean or anything like that though.

In terms of the school quality, the things I value the most are rotations and match lists. I figure that if you have good rotations, you are going to have a better opportunity to match at those rotations. And in general, when I am looking at a school, the match list is one of the things I put the heaviest weight on. Of course there are other factors but who are we kidding, medical school is about getting us to the residency. So if you want a good residency, then...

I am unfamiliar with WVSOM, but that is my take on CCOM

I really agree with all of this. From all I've heard, CCOM really can't be beat on the hospital affiliations/rotations, and that's going to set you up really well for the match. Plus WV has an outrageous OOS tuition. Go to the interview, and then if you get in, go with your gut. Or whoever charges less. :luck:

If I could do it all over again, I'd seriously consider CCOM more. It all depends on what you personally value in a school, but I'd consider forgoing the gorgeous campus and location here at NSU to go to CCOM with all its clinical affiliations/reputation in Chicago area.

At least go out to CCOM to interview and then make your decision.

I'm LEANING towards CCOM, but I just wanted to elicit fair responses. I haven't been accepted yet, so I can't say "oh, I pick CCOM over WVSOM" Right now, I just have to be happy about my acceptance to WVSOM and be excited for future opportunities 🙂

Don't want to jinx a great opportunity, but I am VERY excited about traveling to Chicago for this interview. I traveled frequently to chicago when I was younger, because we have some friends of the family out that way. It is a great city with a lot of culture, and its med schools are top notch. I woul dhave applied to University of Chicago but well... my grades suck and my MCAT, while competitive is not super-duper amazing.

The midwestern "propaganda" as I call it is quite impressive. Received a DVD in the mail which was pretty cool... I:'ve watched it like 3X now. I am a sad individual.

I also think I will really like Downer's Grove... close to the big city but still has enough room to breathe.

here's the 2006 match list. I have an acceptance to wvsom and ccom, and i pick ccom hands down. like you said, wvsom really impressed me with their anatomy lab, but ccom's opporutunities for clinical rotations are awesome. furthermore, i think ccom's curriculum is pretty hardcore (the students said expect 2-3 tests a week (every week after the first) at 7am in the morning on monday/thursdays. (i hope) that it'll help with the boards by reinforcing material. finally i like ccom more cause it also has other schools (pharm, ot/pt, etc) and gives a bigger campus feel. I'm sure i'l be too busy to notice, but it's more similar to what i'm used to (u of IL). while wvsom has a pretty/quiet campus, it gave me me the feeling that we were the only ones there

a downfall for ccom is the cost of living 😱 i totally think it would be worth your while to go to the interview with lots of questions and check it out.

on another note, it also depends on what you're considering as your profession. if you think you're going for rural primary care, i think wvsom may be the place for you. they're top 10 for that in the nation (md and do) ...

I go to WVSOM. And I say go visit as many schools as you possibly can. CCOM has some very nice 3rd and 4th year rotations - so I have gathered on SDN.

I love WVSOM, but at the same time medical school is a huge event in our lives. And you got to choose what's right for you - so by all means go to this interview at CCOM.

Both schools have very high tutition. 😱

I wish you the utmost best.
