I'm applying for residency (pathology of course) this year and I'm interested to know more about the chances of doing cell therapy/research and in which branch of pathology do you see it happening right now, maybe hemathopathology, transfusion medicine?
Any input would be appreciate it!

Dude, didn't you get the message? You were supposed to flee pathology like a few weeks ago!
I think you need to relate this to the Mayan calandar or the Book if Revelation before anyone will reply 🙂

Isn't cell therapy a transfusion thing? What is it again? Do they remove cells with apheresis and then treat them in some way before putting them back in the patient?

really, no one?!!!
Maybe be willing to wait more than 4 hours for a response next time, especially since you posted this on Thanksgiving?

Interestingly, while it seems like a lot of people understand pathology is lab oriented, they often don't realize that few MD pathologists are heavily basic-science research oriented. In this case, lab != research, at least not necessarily. From what I've seen, few of those active in this forum follow the kind of research path you're asking about, so while it's a fair question I'm not surprised it's not getting much action. But maybe someone else will stumble in who can better answer it.

That said, access to active research in fairly specific topics is institution dependent -- if you find a place with someone who already has a grant and is actively researching that topic, then there will probably be a good opportunity to get involved. Otherwise you would need a lot of your own drive to get funding and start something from scratch, which is very difficult at the best of times, and IMO would be extremely difficult while also in residency even if you build in a large chunk of research time through the program.

Thank you!! Finally some input!!
I agree with what was said about the specialty being so focused on the lab, maybe that's why we are staying put there forever in comparison with the radiologists that realized they could do more than just diagnose....I feel so far that I am being punished for my strong basic science research that I've done in the past, and only the people from CP can understand that we can do more... I'll look into those websites, thanks again!

OMG Path 1357, this is the answer that I was looking for SO long!!!!!!!!!
Thanks!!!!!
