🙂 Hi Everyone!!!
I was wondering if anyone else could give me any advice or is also interested in the same career choice of infectious disease, particularly at the CDC??? My ultimate career goal is to work at the CDC and study Infectious Diseases as a physician-scientist, so is choosing the MD/PhD route a good means towards achieving this goal??? Also, if I ultimately want to work at the CDC is a PhD in microbiology more favorable than biochemistry??? In addition, is this an impossible dream where you have to know people to work at the CDC??? Also, is it more important to go to a "higher ranking" school to obtain this dream??? I love the people at a local medical school near me, which isn't very presitigious, but still a good school, and I'm afraid if I attend their MD/PhD program will it hurt my chances at working at the CDC later on??? I attended a small, Catholic university undergrad & it hasn't hurt my chances so far in terms of getting into med school, but will going to a smaller, less well-known medical school hurt my chances at obtaining employment at the CDC???
Also, I was wondering if anyone else is interested in becoming an MD/PhD so that they could study biowarfare??? If anyone had an info on what are good medical programs/residency/research/links so I could learn more about how to be a physician-scientist in the government, particularly in terms of studying the prevention of bioterrorism???

:luck: Thanks everyone!!!

in the wake of the bioterrorism scares, the CIA has been hiring qualified people. i'm pretty sure they offer internships to college students too...

Great! Apply to Emory's MD/PhD program. Emory is top 20 in research, has excellent immunology/ID and you can actually do the PhD component of your MD/PhD AT THE CDC!!! I am convinced that getting your degree there and getting to know the people would be as much a boost as attending a top five medical school in immunology/ID. I've noticed that many of the professors at Emory (some of which work jointly at the CDC) are Emory medical school graduates, so apparently, they like having their own.

I second that! I liked Emory's program very much...and if I went there I would strongly consider doing research at the CDC!

This is hearsay, but I've heard that the CDC folks and Emory folks don't get along too well, and that support for graduate students at the CDC is shaky at best. Am I wrong?

Hi Everyone!!!

Thanks for all of your helpful responses!!! Unfortunately, though, I had applied to Emory's MD/PhD & was rejected!!! 🙁
I figured that'd be tooooooooooooo cool to go there since I could do graduate study at the CDC, but that avenue is closed!!! So, I was wondering if you knew of any other schools, particulary in the Midwest is where I applied (besides my beloved Emory), that would be strong schools in terms of achieving my life-long dream of working at the CDC???

Thanks everyone!!!
