So I wonder if there is a decent grocery store nearby, or like Sam's Club, Walmart, Movie theaters, dry cleaning...?
M. 😕 •••••Hi! I just got something from CT. There was a mini list of banks, furniture stores, gas stations, grocery stores, and drug stores. Most look like they are a couple of miles away... except for the Seven-Eleven. I hope this helps a little bit!

Okay. So, I finally gave in. I picked the convenience of living right by school over the inconvenience of the really, truly, genuinely cramped quarters. 😛

Friends! UHSers! CTers! ?.let the welcoming begin. I sent in my application today, and am actually feeling pretty good about it. Hmm!
Well, I look forward to living amongst you guys. It?ll be fun.

Qafas,
I've been living in apartments for 8 years now. Obviously it's going to continue for at least 7 more. I can tell you that there is a good likelihood that someday when I have a real income I'm going to buy no less than 100 acres somewhere to compensate for all the years I lived in "hamster cages".

Thirdangel, thanks for the info! I hope it comes to me, too! Did you request it or did it just arrive? What floor are you on? I just looked at my layout map of the building yesterday and realized that my "view" will face east. That doesen't face the city. So, I'll have a "view" of the sunrise. Fabulous. Well, I suppose that's appropriate, because I gotta learn to wake up in the morning. I'm usually a complete foghead until I get out of the shower.

Can't wait to meet you guys/girls!
M.

Hi Mary,
thanks for the encouraging words. I feel your pain, and share in your dream of living in wide open pastures where the buffalo roam.....oops! no buffalos anymore. But you know what I mean 😛
By the way, I have requested an apt. facing west. But, I didn't do it for the city view necessarily. I suppose I am your complete opposite when it comes to this; I don't like the sun in my face early in the morning.

Qafas,
That's exactly my point! You were very smart to request the west side. I just figured that if you request a "view" that that's the west side. I'd prefer to watch the sunset ANYDAY rather than the sunrise. But maybe fate served its purpose for me, seeing how to be a doctor you've got to learn to get up before dawn. But it doesen't mean I have to like it!

All I know is that I'm looking forward to living in a sound-proofed apartment. This blasted place I'm living in now is out of control! Last night the people next to me were having the loudest party...and the couple below me had this blowout fight...I had my hand on the phone to call the police because sounded pretty violent. And of course I was soooo tired from a long week at work. My boyfriend ended up going outside and let the party have it for being so loud. We called the police too but they just started up again. It's an old building with wood floors and you can hear everything!!!!! I can't wait to get out of here! And finish med school! And move out to the woods!!!!! whew. Sorry, I had to vent. 😡

So is anyone at CT going to have a pet? I'm not, because I'm mildly allergic and the boyfriend goes into like, anaphylaxis around cats. But I like pets anyway and I'll be happy to visit anyone who has a pet.

Cheers,
M.

Oh, so the rooms at CT are relatively sound proof? That's good to hear. I myself presently live in a flat where I have sometimes have trouble falling asleep due to the arguments I overhear and the people who so kindly offer to share their 1000 dB music with everyone else. This will be a welcome change.

I don't have any pets, unless you count fish.

Does anyone know anything about phone rates internet rates from CT?

I don't know if the apartments at CT are soundproof, but it is a renovated hospital. I have really never heard anyone on the floor above me at a hospital or anyone next door for that matter. So, if they are "soundproof" or not, I would assume that it will be relatively quiet.

Hi Mary,
I understand your troubles with walls that won't hold even whispers. I am currently living in a hotel in Philadelphia, and I have a similar problem, albeit I am on the giving end I suppose 😀 ; I am usually up pretty late at night, and I like to listen to some music while I am getting some studying done. The thing is, I don't play it loud at all!!! In fact, it is barely loud enough for me to hear. But, when I have people staying in the room next door, they usually complain about hearing the music through the wall. So, I end up with headphones.
As for CT, the rooms are not sound proof per se. It is just that it is an old building, and has walls made of concrete and such, instead of plaster and drywall, which are used in newer buildings. In any case, it will be nice to have peace within the walls, especially since we all have a lot of studying ahead of us.
Happy Memorial Day to everyone!

No Pets for me, by the way.....don't think I'll have much time for them. 🙂

I don't know about "official" soundproofing, but relative to what I live in now, with it being a concrete building, I consider it soundproof. Natureboy said it best with reference to the fact that it used to be a hospital.

T.A.M you've got to tell me about the awful physical!

M.

Qafas,
I'm not innocent of being quiet either...our TV gets loud sometimes...is it a guy thing to have the TV loud?!

I think fish sound like a good idea. But I don't know, cleaning tanks, etc., might be a little too high maintenance for me.

Happy Memorial Day!
M.

Have you seen how thick the walls are? It must be soundproof...

I know this is probably silly, but is anyone nervous about living in a place that used to be an old hospital?

MaryC,

I'm not sure what you're talking about when you say "awful physicals". Explain what you mean and I'll try to tell you what I know (if I know anything!).

Well, its good to see that many of you appreciate the occassional sound of silence. It sounds like CT won't be just like a dorm. That was fun a couple of years ago, but I know I've outgrown that sort of life.

No, nothing new to report. I just wanted to keep this thread from getting buried.

Sorry TAM!!
That was meant for Dr. Des! 😳 (about the physical!)
My bad!!!!! 😳 😳 😳

Hello fellow CT-ers! I think I'm going to be on the 7th floor...Lucky #7!!--I'm hoping it'll have an effect on my grades! Actually, I'm just too paranoid to live any further up...you penthouse folks way up on the 10th floor have my complete and total respect. 🙂 I would have even chosen floor #6, but figured the noise from the common floor might permeate through.

I agree, though, about the sound-proof building...hospitals seem to be build with that in mind. Anything would be better than the guy who lives below me right now who plays his PIANO 8 to 9 hours a day! Pianos should not be allowed in apartment complexes, if you ask me. 🙄

Thirdangel--do you mean nervous about GHOSTS?? If so, I think it'd be really cool to have some around! Wouldn't it be interesting if one of the floors turned out to be haunted?

~~Danielle~~

Solie,

Oops, I have a piano. Of course, I don't play it night and day and I don't play too loud- I'm not good enough that I'd want everyone to hear me.

Hi T.A.M.,
I'm sure you'd be fine to live around. 🙂 The guy downstairs from me is just extremely inconsiderate and very unreasonable. Plus, he's got TWO pianos, and gives both piano and singing lessons out of his apartment. Combine that with hardwood floors in an older building, and it's one big headache! 🙄

I'm thinking of investing in a drum set. 🙂

Hello All-
I was wondering if anyone else had the same sour experience that I had with the HPSP program. Since UHS is so expensive, I decided that I would at least apply for a military scholarship from each branch. I was able to contact all the recruters, but kept in most contact with the ARMY guy. The army recruter was the one who arranged my physical and such out at MEPS here in KC.
I had to be there at 4am, and I am not a morning person. Everything regarding the physical went great. Where I did have a major problem was how disrespectful I was treated by many of the service men/women there. First of all, I have multiple piercings that one of the ladies asked me to take out. No problem. When I came back from the restroom (after I had removed everything) though, she reminded me that I would not "process" that day if she found out that I had not removed everything. So what am I, a little kid? I guess I should add that I was the only individual there that day that would be an officer, everyone else there was going to enlist. Still, it is no excuse, whether I am a 17 yr. old high school student or a 23 year old medical student, I demand a certain amount of respect.
The worst part came at the end of the day. I just found out that I had passed everything and was able to go home. All three recruters had previously (on the phone) told me that since I was applying for branches other than the ARMY I would need an EKG and a special eye test in addition to the one I had already received. When I told the medical personel this, they were of no assistance. They told me that since I came in under ARMY I could only have the necessary tests done for the ARMY. I think that they told me this because they didn't want to spend the extra 5 minutes to get the EKG machine out. I then went to the ARMY office and they didn't try to help me either. I was told that if I wanted the oter tests that I would have to take off of work and come back another day at 4:30am under Air Force or Navy.
It was like no one wanted to deal with me. They just kept sending me from one person to the next and giving me the run around. I have never been treated so crappy in my life. I felt helpless, insulted. I am not writing this to discourage anyone from applying. This could have beeen an isolated incident. I would just like some feedback to see if I should reconsider and go forward with the application process. Thanks!

Dear A B,
Geez!
That sucks. Perhaps it's the price you have to pay to not be $180,000 in debt someday. But still, nothing like being disrespected and dehumanized. Why can't they just be helpful, ya know?

I wonder if CT would let me move in prior to Aug. 1. I think I'll be moving the last weekend of July. I want to get all the "getting settled" stuff out of the way.

I wish CT would post a picture of the bathroom/closet on their website so you can see what is built in. Are there drawers built in?

I really can't wait to meet everyone.

Ciao,
Mary

Dear A B,

I am ARMY HPSP and understand what you are talking about-- you are not alone in this experience!!! I also had to get up extremely early, get passed from one dept. to another, and agree that it was fairly dehumanizing in all respects.

To add insult to injury, I had to RETURN to MEPS since I was 3 lbs. over the weight limit according to ARMY officer standards (dated 7/2001) but not according to the 'current' (dated 1/2001) MEPS guidelines. You can imagine our (the recruiter & my) aggravation in attempting to explain this to the MEPS office and get me 'tape-tested' (i.e. measuring a few body circumferences, which takes 5 seconds)! It seriously took all morning! 😡

Anyways, I hope you are/were/will be able to pursue these scholarships despite this not so positive experience, and I'm pretty sure it will get better from here! Good Luck!

~Hillary

Sorry to hear about your experiences at MEPS. I am not doing the scholarships, but am a former Marine, and had a similar experience when I enlisted. The people at MEPS think they can just push people around since we HAVE to get our physicals done and are not there by choice. But, MEPS is not a true reflection of the military itself; so, don't be discouraged. It does get better from here for you guys. 🙂

On another note, I got my apt. today and will be on the 9th floor, facing west.......no more sun in the face early in the morning! Yay!! 😀

Mary: I was just speaking with April at CT this morning, and she asked me if I might be moving in before Aug. 1st; that makes me think that they will likely let you do that. She said that the rent is pro-rated, so the lease doesn't have to being on the 1st. Also, there are a whole bunch of people moving in on the 1st, so that isn't a good time to move anyway. I won't be moving until the 7th or 8th.

Good day everyone!

Qafas,
I watched a Discovery channel show on the Marines one time. God bless all you guys (& the few gals) that are so dedicated. Glad there's someone out there with that dedication, because it would not be me!!

Thanks for the info re: moving in early. Good to know. Since I'm in the Special program (I'm being sarcastic, sorry, sorry, sorry!!). Had to get that off my chest.

I looked at the CT online pictures. That apt. keeps getting smaller and smaller every time I look at it.

Regarding moving, I've gone from....selling all my stuff....to....taking just a few things in a trailer...to....taking nothing and shipping UPS what I need....to....renting a truck and taking everything.......stay tuned.

😛 M.

MaryC,

Yes, the picture gets smaller, but for some reason my memory of the place seems to imagine a bigger and bigger room! I'm just thinking about how I'll fit my piano- and once again, a disclaimer- I do not play loudly, and I do not play all the time.

Dear T.A.M,
So where's your apartment? Is it below/next to mine? Can I come play your piano? Will you teach me? I can play the Ode to Joy, and that's about it! We can have singalongs in your apt. 🙂 🙂 Just joking. I think it's awesome.

I will survive the hamster cage!
M.

Thanks for the kind words, Mary. I completely share in your appreciation of the guys and gals in uniform, especially the ones who end up on the front lines. Their dedication really does speak volumes for their characters; they do such an important job, and most of us never even hear about it.

As for the apt., I agree - it is small. That was the first thing that came to my mind when I was in KC actually looking at the apt. I still remember thinking that there was no way I'ld be moving into CT......yet, here I am!
But, it shouldn't be all that bad. I'll be by myself for the first few months, until my wife joins me in KC. I think the closeness to the univ. is worth the lack of space. And living right amongst others from the school is a definite plus.

By the way, I am thinking about starting a thread specifically for 9th floor CTers! 😀 j/k

Oh Qafas, you kill me!!!!!

Actually, why don't you start a thread for the 9th floor CTers who have WEST FACING VIEWS!! 🙄

Ya know, you've actually got me thinking! Maybe I'll ditch the 10th floor east facing apartment and go for a LOWER floor facing west!! Then I wouldn't have to rappel as far down if the place goes up in flames!

I went to Walgreen's today and bought contact lens solution to last me hopefully through next year. And soap. And ibuprofen. And Gillette foamy. I'm bracing myself for my negative income.

😛 M.

Not a bad idea Mary, the West-facing-9th-floor CTers thread! 🙂 But I'm afraid that it'll end up being a monologue, with me exchanging my views and thoughts with, well, myself. Unless, of course, you should really decide to move down one floor 🙂
Hey, that ibuprofen should come in handy during the next few years........I'ld buy the family pack. No, wait! Let's make that the extended-family pack! 😀
Good day!

YES MY PETS,

....if you need Ibuprofen, you just come to Mama Mary's apt. I'll fix ya up. I've got a 25 lb bag of white Jasmine rice, too, in case you need rice. Rice is gooooooooood.
😛 M.

Dear Mary,

WOOHOO rice!! I SO need to bring my rice cooker & we can KICK IT UP A NOTCH!

If anyone needs Excedrin Migraine, I'm pretty sure I have enough for the entire class for at least MSI, if not MSII also! I always have it with me, JUST IN CASE, which, unfortunately, occurs often.... 😡

On another note, does anyone have/know the dimensions of the living area & bedrooms at CT??
I'm sure I could e-mail for them, but if someone has them already, it would be helpful for furniture planning! THANKS! 😀 😀

~Hillary

Hi Hillary!
How've ya been. CT told me about 500 sq ft for the Metro. The LR/BR are about the same size. Myself, I'm going to have a futon, and a la-z-boy chair, a coffee table, a t.v. table with my stereo on it also, and possibly a shelving unit in the LR. Queen bed, nightstand, chest of drawers in BR.

I've heard about this Tamale place down the road on 24 over in Independence. (Anyone love Mexican as much as me???) I can't wait to check it out. My boyfriend told me that if it's the place he thinks it is, that I'll be overnighting tamales to him. Now that's love.

Catch ya later!
M.

Dear Mary,

Thanx for the info.!! I have been super busy with school, but I am SO THERE with you for Mexican food -- get me outta this gringo place!! I hope all else is well-- only 2 months to go!

~Hillary

All,

Speaking of restaurants, does anyone know of any good German restaurants in the KC area? I'm probably the only person you'll ever know who's nuts about German food, and given the small number of Teutonic eating establishments in the , I go for just about any one I can find.

TAM,
I'll eat wienerschnitzel with ya any time!

Hillary, I'm glad you love mexican too! I wish that I knew more mexican recipes..It just never tastes as good as it does at a restaurant when I make it. Although I got this great/easy recipe for fresh pico de gallo, and it's YUMMY!

BAM!
M.

I also LOVE Mexican food. My boyfriend doesn't like it as much and I always tell him I'll be finding someone else to go to Mexican restaurants with. I know a few good places, including a mexican buffet. We'll have to check out some new ones though.

I know there are german restaurants around. Check out KansasCity.com. They have good restaurant listings. There are also several German towns within driving distance of Kansas City for weekend trips. I don't know much about them, but you should check that out too.

I almost feel like I may be missing out by commuting to school. I definitely hope to befriend some of you in Century Towers. I'm ready to make new friends, hang out, oh wait, I meant find study partners. haha I'll have to go over there and take a tour of everyone's new apartments.

Anna

Anna,
You and any other commuters are welcome to come hang out (study!?!) anytime. It will be nice to have a local around to show us the ropes of KC. Your input so far has been great!

Anna I'm so sorry about the loss of your grandma. I know the sadness you must be feeling. But she will always live in your memories, and that is something very important because by always remembering her you will be celebrating her life!
Take good care of yourself during the next few months....let's be sure to go get some tacos/enchiladas/tostadas/tamales/margaritas when we get to school!!!

Cheers,
M.

From a UHS graduate (me) to the newcomers...
German food...well you aren't that far from Hermann(I think) MO, I think that is a big "German" touristy thing.
I am not sure you guys really want to eat much from Independence Blvd, little shady, but lots of Vietnamese Joints.
The absolute BEST place to study, and get away from your classmates, is KU Med Library on 39th street. Huge and very very quiet. Plus it is next to Da Bronx pizza, Chipotle, Muddy's Coffee, and Mama's Cafe.
Best Steak...Hereford House or Plaza 3 (in the plaza)
Best martini...Empire Room or Velvet Dog
Best neighborhood bar...Charlie Hoopers in Brookside (also the best neighborhood)
Best Park to picnic...Loose Park
Cheapest Beer (yech)...Harpo's
Best Breakfast...Mama's
Best looking bartenders (these ladies are strippers when not bartending)...Gilhouly's(can't spell) on 39th

Best medical bookstore...KU med
Best Pizza...Greek Pizza (minus sausage) at Minsky's on Main St
Best Chicken Wings and best Hidden Party/Good time...the Peanut

Wise words...DO NOT BUY A FANCY STETHESCOPE (get a littman lightweight), DO NOT BUY A FANCY DIAGNOSTIC KIT, and DON"T BUY ALL THE BOOKS THEY TELL YOU TO BUY! Find a non-medschool friend.

A.B and Mary C,
Sorry to jump in on the conversation like forever ago about the military but I haven't been able to get online for like a month so my apologies, Mary C! But FYI, I'm on the 9th floor at CT! Woo Hoo! I got my espresso machine and I'm ready to jam. I read your description of the physical, A.B., and my experience was completely identical. I, too am applying to more than one branch and have run into the same types of problems. Also, they said the same things to me about my one piercing and reminded me very rudely to take it out several times. I don't know if you agree, but I really feel like had I been prepared for what the day would be like I could have handled things much better! NOT ONE of my recruiters described it to me! If I had been told I would have to strip down, etc and sit in a freezing cold room for 3 hours I would have been able to psych myself up for it. At this point, I have the KS primary care scholarship ($15000/year) and am considering doing that instead. However, I am still going to pursue the 3-year Air Force Scholarship in case I change my mind at some point this year. From what I understand, though, the physical is the worst part of the entire ordeal that we as med students would be subjected to. It's somewhat expected for enlistees getting prepared for bootcamp, but for us it's a bit different because your recruiters are treating the situation completely different and assuring you you don't have to go through boot camp or anything like it-- it was just a big, unpleasant surprise. But hey -- there are worse things I can think of doing to get my education paid for...

🙂

Hi all,

I spent the weekend in KC looking for apartments and am most likely going to be living in Bennington Ridge apartments. I haven't made any sort of commitment to them yet but am pretty sure I'll be living there. Are there any other first years living there too??? They said they cater to about 30% of the UHS students. So, if there are second years that are already living there, then could you tell me how you like it there???

Thanks,
ShrubbyDoc🙂

Shrubby...I hate Bennington Ridge. Let me tell you why. At first all the staff comes accross real nice and helpful, then you move here and they become stuck-up bit*hes. When you need something done or ask them for help on something they refer to it as them doing a "favor" for you instead of it being their job. The parking is horrible and if there are no spots left you will most likely get a ticket for parking anywhere other than the designated spots. these apartments are noisey, I can hear every fight, music, shower, bathroom use, or frolicking from upstairs and down. I know that a lot of the people that live here currently are moving to other places, namely century towers or other apartments. Bennington is losing a lot of business because of the arrogance of their staff.

thats just my personal opinion. I will be moving out in July, I cant wait to get out of here. I almost wish i could figure ou a way to get evicted to hurry the process up.

Dear Des,
How the heck are ya? An espresso machine...that's pretty cool. Hillary's bringing the rice steamer...I don't have any neat appliances (I do have a rice cooker, though) but I can make a mean pot of spaghetti sauce and meatballs! I'll be reciting anatomy while I stir the sauce. Usually I say a prayer, well, I'll still be doing that too! 🙂

May I say the one thing that's kindof a bummer is the bathroom at CT? I'm not too fond of the standup shower stall. Oh well, I'll get used to it!

M.

Mary,
I totally agree about the bathroom situation. I myself enjoy long relaxing baths, so I'm definitely going to miss that. But hey -- there's always the hot tub! I've been so busy getting all my crap together to move into the apartment, because I have NOTHING of my own! But as I mentioned before, I am the proud owner of an espresso machine that I got a damn good deal on ($35 brand new!). As soon as I figure how to work the thing, I'll be happy to make you some sort of an espress-like concoction. And it's good that you know how to cook real food, because I am the queen of frozen food. I'm getting so antsy to start, I can't wait! I never got to go away to college, so I'm ecstatic to finally get that chance. We're all going to have such a blast. What floor is everyone on?

hey fello cters,
i'll be on the 8th floor...sorry haven't posted...for a long time...usually don't sit around computer for too long....i'll be looking forward to some of that vietnamese food ...home away from home...heheh....i'll try to keep up w/ the conversations...more often....if anyone gets their financial aid package anytime...please tell me....i want to see how much interest will i have to eventually pay off....hahaha
always,
vinh

Good Morning Des,
You're on! I've never been much of an espresso conessiuer (sp?) but I'm willing to try!

The HOT TUB. That's right. It will be nice. I hope that they clean it regularly and well, though!!

I'm antsy too. There's so much to do before I go to KC. I wish I could go to sleep and wake up tomorrow and this transition is done.

Peace and love,
M.

UHS 2005,

I PM'ed you about Bennington.

Thanks,
ShrubbyDoc

Mary C,

I, too am ready for this transition to be over. I'm working nine to five right now and have ZERO motivation to go to work because I want to be in medical school like right now. I hope I don't go into shock -- new city, new living arrangement, new school, new friends. It will be a much needed and welcome change, though! But I guess the great thing is that everybody there will need a friend. I haven't heard about my financial aid, yet -- have you? And is anyone doing the KS primary care scholarship?

PS: The hot tub sanitation is definitely a requirement!

All I can say is enjoy the transition while it lasts!. I've been working like a madman for two years, and I can't wait for my month and half of recuperation to begin!

Hi all! It's been a while since I've posted. I was just curious if there were any 6th floorers out there. I sure hope there are, otherwise I'll just have to hang out in the upper reaches of CT. Oh, doctordes, I'm going to be doing the KS Osteopathic Scholarship. They sent me the paperwork a few days ago. It's definitely going to help out as far as financing med school. Also, to all those who are wondering on financial aid, the financial aid department people told me that they weren't going to send out our reward letters until middle/late June because they were still finishing up 4th year student stuff. Hope this helps anyone who's getting nervous about financing med school.

Hello All,
Sorry that I have not posted in a while. Thanks to everyone who replied about their experiences with the military. Your responses were greatly appreciated! It is good to know that I was not singled out. I did decide that I am not going to pursue a military scholarship at this time. I think that I need to seriously evaluate the pros and cons before I commit that many years of my adult life.
And to doctordes, drchris, and jrfromks- I too received the KS Osteopathic Scholarship. The $15, 000 a year will be awesome, but I really wish it would cover a little bit more like the military of National Health Service Corp. Speaking of the service corp, is there anyone who is in this group or anyone who can give me some more information? I missed the deadline for this year and was told that forms will not be available for next year till Octorber. Does anyone have a form from the previous year?
drchris- i enjoy you posts. i wish i was working with humans instead of rats!
If anyone woukd like more information about life on the Kansas side I wouldn't mind helping you out. Also, I visited to the lofts in the City Market/Downtown area last Saturday(Missouri side). They are about 5 min. from school, super nice, but very expensive. The cheapest studio that was livable was about $750. Is anyone else interested in living in the lofts?
I can't wait to meet all you guys. Only two months from today! What are the plans for Friday Aug.16th? Maybe we should plan a barbacue or theme party. Anyone interested? Sorry that I will not be living in CT. The rooms are too small. I am 6' tall and need my space. Later.
Amber
