Only 1 hour left to make changes to the rank list! I've seen "rank order list" threads posted in past years, so I thought I'd start one up. Here's my list:

1) University of Virginia
2) University of Michigan
3) Washington University
4) Yale
5) University of Colorado
6) University of Alabama
7) Medical University of South Carolina
8) Cleveland Clinic
9) Wake Forest
10) University of North Carolina

It was particularly difficult deciding the order of my top 4. It took some serious self-restraint not to make any last minute changes. I hope I made a good decision. Let's here about the rest of you...

Don't really feel comfortable posting ROL, but yay for everyone! Now the waiting begins. 🙂

1. MGH
2. Brigham and Women's
3. UPenn
4. Yale
5. BIDMC
6. UChicago
7. JHU (They are taking 4-5 residents - aren't you excited to be in that tiny class at that big, big hospital?)
8. Cleveland Clinic

(And I don't understand how you don't feel comfortable doing this because this is just for senseless fun. No one knows or cares who you are - so stop being such a grandma. The original poster is asking for ROL so don't post a bunch of bull**** on here that isn't a ROL unless you append a bitchy comment to a ROL like I am doing now.)

🙄 Apparently no one "knows or cares" about anything on these boards, yet people seem to spend an inordinate amount of time posting absolute nonsense on here. Mmmkay, I'm going to go ahead and post whatever I want, especially if it's wishing other people luck.

so as not to offend any more delicate souls:

UCSF
BWH
JHU
Michigan
Penn
Stanford
MGH
Yale
Pittsburgh

I noticed that most people here don't neccessarily rank programs in the same geographical location together...kinda interesting, I guess most people are willing to move anywhere for residency

no idea... I definitely get the feeling that tinyfish and nursegollam are female, but don't know why exactly.

Well, we kinda make assumptions unconsciously based on screen name right? For example it's less likely a guy will have "Tiny" in the username. My username probably sounds more like a guy's but doesn't mean I'm neccesarily a guy 🙂 (Although I am)

It's hard to believe that this is one of the most popular threads by number of views (in such a short period of time) and yet very few ROL (~1-2% post/view). Are there no more pathologists-to-be out there?

The lists are in, and so are the programs so even if someone could figure out our real names, it wouldnt matter anymore anyways. That poll is a good idea though, have no idea how to do it though.

Female indeed, though some of my language can come off as masculine apparently according to a PM I once received assuming I could be male.

But yah, feeling vastly outnumbered here all of a sudden! Funny bc I thought females held a slight majority at my interviews.

Also indeed female. Maybe it *is* the Tiny in my name...and the fact that I use expressions like, "Yay!" and put smileys in my posts. Dang. Better stop giving myself away.

Not sure if it's reluctance/paranoia re: posting lists, or apathy now that the wheels are set in motion toward match day. I don't know what happened in previous years, but I get the feeling there might be more activity after the 18th.

Brainsalads...your username makes me inexplicably hungry every time I see it...😀

Well, whether you are female or male or anywhere in-between, I'm sure everyone can hardly wait for March 18 to finally roll around! I know I am certainly wishing it was this week.

I second this. This is going to be a long two and a half weeks without more ROLs. 1,800+ views -- come on!

I know that it technically can't make a difference at this point if we post our ROLs (at least in the sense that the it won't affect the Match outcome), but there are other reasons someone may not want to post.

For example, if many/all of their programs are in one state or geographic region, it may lessen their anonymity within the forum (particularly if there are few other posters, or med students going into pathology, from that area).

I know that some users already share where they matched and are doing their residency (or where they are an attending), which creates another reason someone may not want to share their ROL. Suppose you end up matching at one of these programs, but it was nowhere near the top of your list. Would you want your colleagues/attendings who may also use this forum to know (and possible spread the word around) that their program was not one of your top choices?

Some people may also be somewhat ashamed (or at least not as proud) of their ROLs if they didn't get interviews at a lot of big name programs.

I know these explanations are a little silly (oh noes! peoplez on teh internets don't think my ROL is good enough!) and it is easy enough to create a new user account later if you need one. I just thought I would offer a few reasons why many of those viewing might not want to post their ROL.

Ugh, these are nauseating. It's no wonder a person in pathology with a little bit of gumption can excel.

Didn't rank a few other places that were good programs, but not in my geographic area of preference.

I'm surprised I'm the only one of 10+ lists whom ranked Mayo. Anyone interview but decide not to rank?

The sense that I got was the MidWest programs are not too popular among people who are from either side of the coast. Wash U seems to be the exception, vs. U Mich, Mayo, Cleveland Clinic are less so. Have thought of applying to Mayo but decided against it because of reason not related to the strength/location of the program.

Posting your rank list will not directly advertise who you are. However, posting your rank list and then posting where you matched will make it relatively easy to figure out who you are, especially if you match at a small program. Be aware of this.

It is true that people from fly over country desire to love in california or manhattan or Miami or Boston but coastal people consider the Midwest in essence ****sville and will only live there if they have no other opportunities or they are forced to out of marriage or because they are eccentric or have family there

Thanks, pathstudent. I'll be honest and say I was denied an interview at BWH -- otherwise, it would definitely be at or near the top.

I'm extremely proud (and feeling lucky) of my ROL. There are no bad ones, and I put Emory at the bottom because of location. My wife doesn't want to live in Atlanta.

Good luck, all.

In the end, a spouse's input/preference carries just as much weight as (if not more than) anything else when making these decisions.

I can see why coastal people usually stay with the coastal areas. I think it's more because of unfamilarity with the area more than anything. Chicago's actually quite nice if you like a big city that's cleaner than NYC but still with a vibrant cultural/art scene. (But it puzzles me that some people would think Chicago is part of the "East Coast", notably the Californians 🙂)

I guess I'd agree with the comment about the coast-ers. Although I'm an exception to that b/c I'm from the NE, currently in the Mid-West, love it, and wouldn't mind staying. I don't think my home city is all that great, even though most people think it's the center of the universe. That being said, I'm not in a typical Mid-West town, and home is home.

Also, it goes both ways - most of the born-and-raised MW-erners I've met here would rather get poked in the eye with sharp objects than live on the coasts.

This has been my experience as well. I'm a native east coaster although I lived in the mid-west for a few years before med school. Despite numerous visits to the west coast, it just seems like a different country. With so many listing UCSF as their number one, it looks like I won't be seeing that name two weeks from now. Although I will say SF is pretty Fing sweet.

It's not like you ranked UCSF number 1 anyway... 😉

And regarding Mayo, I interviewed there but ranked it pretty low in the end. I can't handle being an hour and half away from the nearest civilization...

I am one of those born-and-bred Midwestern folk who would rather have sharp sticks poked into their eyes than live in a big city on the coast. Okay, maybe it would worth keeping my eyesight, but it was distasteful enough to me that I didn't even apply to programs in big cities like NY, Boston, Chicago, LA, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I like the cultural attractions (good ethnic restaurants, museums, theater/shows, etc.), but I would rather travel a good distance to partake of these things occasionally (not to mention that many smaller cities/college towns have these amenities). I find that being closer to more rural areas where I can go hiking, horseback riding, kayaking, etc. is much more valuable to me. Not to mention that after growing up in a rural area, even living in the suburbs makes me feel all crowded and lacking in privacy.

My husband and I are also big fans of seasons like fall, winter, and spring (and not being forced into air conditioned buildings for half the year).

It's not like you ranked UCSF number 1 anyway... 😉

Indeed. Anyone else having second thoughts about their ROL? :scared: Sure, nothing I can do about it now, but if anyone wants to share my anxiety with me, I'm all for it.
Perhaps things will work out regardless, but I'm not much of an optimist.

Well, no in the sense that I loved all the programs I ranked in my top 5. Yes, in the sense that it feels like this process is at least partially out of our control and I don't like that feeling. Things will work out, as long as we make them work out.

Yes, I made a last minute change (3 minutes before deadline) to my Rank List and I kinda regret it now, but it probably wouldn't matter at the end. From the NRMP website, although statistically close to 90% of U.S. Seniors get one of their top 4 choices, you always wonder if you'll be one of those unlucky ones.

Pretty scattered, random appearing, but my husband's needs played a large role in the selection. I'm really happy with the list and can't wait for Thursday!

1. University of Washington
2. University of Chicago
3. UT Southwestern
4. UNM (Albuquerque)
5. University of Wisconsin
6. Northwestern
7. University of Minnesota
8. University of Arizona
9. University of Utah

Good luck everyone! 🙂

I am with Euchromatin and there was no way I was even going to apply to the coastal programs where my resident's salary wouldn't be worth as much. My ROL stuck to the midwest programs that were strong in surgery (couples match- woohoo).

Regional Match Statistics from NRMP is out...looks like only 19 of the 503 spots available for Pathology match this year went unfilled...I wonder how it was like compared to prior years...I kept hearing on my interview trail that more and more well-qualified people apply to Pathology...meaning we should expect less spots go unfilled compared to before.
