Looking to apply to mostly DO school and 1 MD this upcoming cycle. Would like any feedback on possibly where I can maximize my chances. I know numbers wise that I am competitive for DO. What makes me nervous, is I have a red flag on my app. Misdemeanor 5 years ago (nonviolent, non-drug related). Any suggestions for schools that focus on reinvention applicants would be appreciated.

Post-bac Student from Florida (Received Bachelors of Science in Public Health at a state university in 2012).
Took 65 Credits (All Science +Pre-reqs) and maintained a 4.0.
  • Cumulative GPA : AACOMAS 3.6 AMCAS 3.1
  • Science GPA AACOMAS 3.86 AMCAS 2.9
  • MCAT: 28 (10Bio/8Verbal/10Phys)
  • EC are ok: President of Fraternity (1.5 yrs); Held many other smaller roles in organization that gave me a lot of non-clinical volunteering; Including organizing beauty pageant that raised over $3K for children's miracle network. 120 hours volunteering hospital admissions as well.
  • Clinical experience i feel is a strong point for me: 2 years working as patient care tech in Hospital;1 year working as a scribe in Emergency Department; 6 months as scribe in ophthalmology clinic.
  • Shadowing is ok: 25 hours palliative care, 10 hours geriatric, 100 hours trauma bay in ED, 10 hours ophthalmology surgery (allowed to get exposure to some surgery procedures)
  • Research is a weakness: No posters/abstracts/anything, just joined a research lab Fall2015. It has been very productive and i feel like I am contributing. It just looks like my name is not going to be on anything until 2017. So I will not put anything in the primary application and will possibly mentioned a poster in a LOI later in the application cycle.

Debating if I should apply to any MD schools; I feel like I associate with Florida State's message very well (URM-Hispanic; Focused on Primary Care), Also a 1st generation college student.

For DO Schools I am applying very broadly because of my red flag. LECOM (Both campuses), NOVA, KCOM, MSU, Midwestern, NYIT, PCOM (Both Campus), Rowan, UNE, Pikevile, Edward Via (Both Campus), West Virginia,

Any insight would be appreciated and thanks again,

You probably should list the research activity. At least the dates and indicate its ongoing. You can still include it in updates later if something develops. I wouldn't waste money on MD schools. You probably won't make it through auto screen with a2.9 sGPA. Do you know what FSUs 10th percentile is for GPAs? I suppose it would be okay to apply. You never know what might happen. Good luck.

Unless you're Mexican(not all Hispanics are URM), I suggest forgoing any MD schools. Your GPAs are lethal. IF you speak Spanish, consider the four PR schools.

Only three of them accept students from the mainland, though. UPR does not.
