what chad means with saying in third shell there are 32 or 9 orbitals. I understand where the 9 comes from but how we get 32??????

so whats 2n^2 for then?

i figured if 3= n, shell
then its 2*3 ^2 so 6^2= 36

am i totally wrong?

# of e- 2n^2
#of orbitals n^2

???? this was in my notes >.<

your notes are right...your math could use some work...

it's 2n^2, as in 2*(n^2)

for n = 3, that's 2 * 3^2 = 2 * 9 = 18 e-
