There are a few questions that I don't understand the answer to in Chad's Cell Division quiz.

1. A cleavage furrow begins to develop during which of the following mitotic phases:

Anaphase
correct.png

Metaphase
Telophase
incorrect.png

Prophase

According to Cliffs AP Bio, it appears that cytokinesis begins and concludes during telophase.


2. In mitosis, chromosomes line up at the metaphase plate and are pulled apart, whereas in meiosis I, chromosomes __________ at the metaphase plate and move to poles that are opposite of each other.

In Cliffs AP Bio, it mentions that during Prophase I of Meiosis I, homologous chromosomes pair up forming a tetrad or bivalent. As a consequence, in metaphase I, the homologous line up at the metaphase plate and are separated into two individual chromosome pairs.

1) Im with you on that one. I believe the answer should be telophase. Anaphase is the shortest phase in mitotic division where the spindles pull chromatids to each of the poles.

2)The answer should be pair up. The tetrads line up at the metaphase plate but the chromosomes pair up with their homologues to form the tetrad at the metaphase plate.

Thanks for the quick response. I am still confused on the second one. If you watch this video from 6:25-8:50, he explains it differently. Unless he is incorrect, it appears as if the homologous are just lining up during metaphase not actually pairing since they pair in Prophase I in order to cross over.

Ok now I see what you're saying. Since they form tetrads during prophase 1, then they don't actually "pair up" during metaphase. I wouldn't worry about this question too much since its ambiguous. I think the question is trying to point towards the "pair up" answer since meiosis metaphase 1 is different from mitosis metaphase by the way chromosomes line up. If you have that down, you're good.

There's post before about this but there can be mistakes and confusing issues with chad's quizzes for bio. He said it himself that his bio section is not ready. It's still in the experimental process. Though some questions are good. I'd say get a solid foundation in cliffs/bootcamp/destroyer questions before you search for more exposure.
 
If you can figure out why the questions are wrong, it will still aid you in the learning process. I suggest reporting the questions. Sometimes, one of his workers will email you asking what you think the right answer should be
