Hi guys, so I'm a P1 and I went to a school picnic a couple of months ago where there were some recruiter tents...I spent some time talking to a recruiter from a chain and when she found out where I lived she immediately wanted to interview me as an intern for my area's store. I came into pharmacy school wanting a hospital internship and I still do, don't really want to work for this chain...I politely told her that I want to focus on school this semester and don't want to work immediately (but in reality I just wasn't interested). She took my email address down and she's been sending follow up emails here and there wanting to interview me. I'm 99% percent sure she'll hire me if I meet up with her. Just looking for some advice, should I go for the interview? and try to work minimal hours as possible if hired just to get retail experience and try to get better internship later? turn the interview down if I know I'm not interested? thanks for any help

Yes - In my opinion, this is a great opportunity for you. In fact, I would go as far as to say that this is a better opportunity than a residency. This is a chance to get hands on experience, and to make a little extra cash. This hands on experience will be massively valuable when you graduate. I can not stress how valuable this experience will be on your CV.

You never know what kind of doors will open by taking this opportunity. Just be sure to communicate that you do not want more than a couple shifts a week maximum.

I'm getting an internship definitely. I'm not saying its this or no internship. I was asking if I could do this as a sideto a better internship I can probably get later or just turn it down.

If you can handle it + school then I say do it. You can always quit if you get hired in a hospital.

I just want to say keep in mind some hospitals require you have experience before they will consider hiring you as a tech so the retail experience may be a necessary stepping stone. Also, hospital internships are much harder to get. What if you never get that opportunity? Some experience is better than no experience. If you do end up getting the internship you want later on, you can always quit the first internship.

do I get put on a blacklist or something if I quit? If I ever need a job from them in the future would they not hire me?

BTW does anyone know if the big chains require you to work full time during the summers?

Unless you burns your bridges on your way out I highly doubt you'll get blacklisted. But you better believe an intern who's stayed with the company through graduation will be given first preference for a job over you.

I have never heard of a chain that requires their interns to work full time during the summer (unless you're doing one of those 'summer intern programs'), but I think it's fair for them to expect you'll be available to work more compared to when school's in session.

Why not go for an interview and get answers to these questions straight from the person who determines them?

LOL yes good point. I'm just trying to figure out whether I should accept the interview or not that's why...for example if someone on here said they want you to work full time summers for sure I would have declined b/c I'm hoping to get hospital internship (which I know requires full time summer). The thing is I am 99% sure she wants to hire me asap because of the location being hard to fill and because she already emailed me an employment app.

Not sure if all chains require full time, but the one I am an intern for requires 30 hours for 8 weeks over the summer. May drop it depending if I get one of the intern spots my school offers through our hospital. On the plus side, at least it's income over the summer and you're getting experience.
