Hey Guys, I just about gave up my dream for medicine. But after a lot of deliberation I can't help but want to become a doctor even more. Wrapping up a research Master's here (gpa = 3.9). Haven't applied anywhere yet, but I am not hopeful for Canadian or US MD. I don't want to go overseas... but wanted to know if I had a good shot at US DO?

(undergrad) oGPA and sGPA around 3.45
(undergrad + grad) around 3.5

-Estimated using AMCAS guidelines

MCAT = 12-10-10-Q (32Q)

ECs = charity cycling (260km ride) raising $3000 for cancer research, returned as volunteer / crew "captain" every year after. Hospital volunteer a while ago, addictions counselling, overseas GP shadowing and volunteering, lots of hockey. Varied work experience + tutoring.

If I apply early, get an MD LOR (it's difficult to do that here in Canada),
do I have a realistic shot at a US DO admission?

Thanks for all insight,

A hopeful Canadian.

yes you would.

check out the DO For Canadians thread here in this forum.

good luck

US DO should be sure shot for you. Did you trying moving to another province? Your MCAT is awesome, should help you if you move to an easier province.

Ya you're fine for sure...I have the same stats as you pretty much, minus the masters. I got accepted to the places I interviewed and canceled other interviews. If you applied to MD in the states you might get in too if you're not sure about DO. I really really liked the school I got in to and I can't wait to start 🙂

Moving to Alberta would make me IP for 3 schools. I think I'll have a decent shot at either UoA or UoC after a year. It's just that I don't want to spend a year moving there and deciding between doing classes and working. I guess I could work and do courses through Athabasca. I actually have a pretty decent entry-level gov't job lined up there - but it will make no use whatsoever of my research-Master's and I'm afraid that it would take up too much of my time when I should be doing more courses in addition to EC's and working on applications... I have debt to pay off so I can't idle for too long.

And I still have about a year left with my Master's... so it'd be nice to get going (I'm currently 24) with an acceptance somewhere for 2012. And we all know how many Canadians with stellar stats apply year after year after year... it's just such a crap shoot in Canada.

I guess the smart thing to do would be to apply in Canada, and to the US (MD + DO) this summer and see where I stand...

Thanks!

That's awesome, Christine... Congrats! I also think location and fit are key - that's another reason I'm eye-ing the States... Although I'd never get sick of hockey, there's only so many years of Canada one can take...

Western would actually be near the top of my list - however, I'm a little worried about their "behvairoual sciences" pre-req. The only that I have that may satisfy that is Philosophy, but they don't have that listed. I guess I could easily take two psych courses if I were to be given an interview - does anyone know if they accept courses through an online "open" university like Athabasca or Thompson Rivers? Also was it Western that required Canadian students to do at least a year of undergrad in the States?

Anyway, good to know I had options... I seriously thought that it was gloomy for me... as I really didn't want to do more courses for the next 2-3 years without an acceptance somewhere.

Nope Western doesn't require that because they accepted me and I don't have a year of US undergrad....I don't know about the online college thing though. You could always try calling and asking.
I think applying to all three like you said is the best idea. It takes FOREVER to fill out all the aplications though and it's going to cost a lot just FYI. Also depending where you live there are DOs in Canada and they seem to all be really nice and willing to let you shadow and give LORs and stuff. I think you should for sure get an LOR from a DO if you want to apply to the schools.
Good Luck !
