I'm trying to decide whether I should go to a school which may potentially get me into a guaranteed pre-med program as opposed to leaving it up to chance. In my current school, I am in the Honors Program, have a GPA of 3.84, sGPA ~3.7, plenty of volunteering/shadowing...at a different school, there is a guaranteed program (which I meet/exceed all of the requirements for), however, the different school is more expensive than my current one. Although I wouldn't know until after my first semester at the different school if I got into the pre-med program, is it worth it to switch for the sake of security? The drawbacks on my transcript would be that I would have Withdrawn from a Gen Chem II and possibly from Orgo I (the program requires all B's/A's and I am not sure whether I will end up with a B or C...).

You are going to need to be much more specific if you want any credible advice.

What year in school are you; have you taken MCAT or practice MCAT; if so what are your scores; how many credits do you stand to lose from the transfer; would it add years to your undergrad; approximately HOW much more expensive and how important is that to you; significant difference in commute to home or "fit"

what do you mean by "guaranteed" Pre-med program? "Guaranteed" admission to the medial school? The majority of programs I am aware of have clauses like "must meet minimum GPA and MCAT score of X.XX and XX." Most of the time X.XX and XX would get you into a school anyway without limiting your options/financial aid opportunities.

All things considered, if you think you are (objectively) a good candidate for med schools you shouldn't limit yourself to only one place. This coming from someone who applied and was accepted via EDP.

Sorry, to clarify: I wouldn't lose all that many credits, the school is more expensive by about 20k (but that wouldn't stop me from going in the long run), I have not taken the MCAT (I'm a sophomore, but I am already in a preparation course), and the program requires a 27 MCAT and a 3.3 GPA (I currently have a 3.84 GPA...sGPA is ~3.7-.8); the main drawback would be that I would have to drop out of an Orgo I class to make absolutely sure I can get in to the program (the program requires B's/A's in pre-med courses and I wouldn't want to chance a C).
I guess my main conundrum is that the program does not accept students until December-I would have to apply in the fall and hope I get in. I spoke with several pre-med advisors who said that a guarantee is excellent, but only if I can get in (I'm fairly certain I can, I meet all of the requirements). The December acceptance gives me pause because I would be transferring schools to go to a program that is not guaranteed (regardless how much I meet/exceed the requirements) until I receive the acceptance letter. Thanks for bothering to read this!
