Dreamt of IM and being a general internist, but got step 2 and its 235, disgustingly low for a visa req IMG. Thinking of dual applying FM, obviously they'll see through it since LoRs say applying to IM, CV smells of IM.
Is it worth applying to newer FM programs and programs that didn't fill, will I have a chance if my personal statement shows interest in primary care?

Chance yes, but if possible, at least one LoR that says FM. FM does hospital medicine, so I'd make sure to apply to programs that have grads going into hospitalist. I would find something that you like about FM in addition to the hospital medicine so that it makes sense to the reader. FM can open doors that IM doesn't. Planning on women's health? Peds? Possibly in the future? More outpatient procedure skills?

I also think that 235 is fairly decent, so I'd make sure to apply broadly to IM programs as well. Look at IMG friendly states/programs.

Thanks for replying, yeah will apply to 200 IM, but a 20th percentile score (Yeah I was shocked) for an Asian, non-carib IMG who needs visa is tough. May get 2-3 IVs if lucky. Was thinking of adding another 100 FM, that don't specify that they need FM letters and just change up the PS.
I'm interested in adult med for the most part, but can hopefully just do rural hospitalist without OB peds after graduating. I just wanna get into the system somehow at this point.
