Junior at a public state university in North Carolina, Black Male, With a steep upward trend and great LOR's and evaluations. Works part-time job 20-25 hours a week, no shadowing or voluteering but will begin this summer with a 100 hour pledge.

Fresh. 2.5 GPA
Soph. 3.3 GPA
Junior. 3.8 GPA and rising

CGPA 3.25
SGPA 3.65

I haven't taken the MCAT but planning on taking at the begining of next year (2012).
A, B split in general biology and Chemistry and mostly A's in my higher level biology and Math classes, now taking Organic Chem and blowing it out of the water. Should have my GPA up over 3.4 after the summer before my senior year begins. Taking the Kaplan MCAT prep class in the fall.

What are my chances?

I'm no expert, but based on your numbers you have a chance. Especially with that sGPA. Good Luck!

Strong increase in GPA looks very good...you will get in
good luck

Take the MCAT man! It will really let you know where you stand

do well on your MCAT and you'll definitely be accepted somewhere. your science GPA is awesome, and you have an upward trend. I think admissions committees may be lenient with regards to your freshman year. I would suggest Examkrackers over a Kaplan prep course, though, but that's just my opinion. Good luck!

I agree with the others. I currently interview applicants at my school and if I saw your application I would be really impressed that you improved so much. Now with that said, you are competing against other minority and non-minority students who never started out with low a GPA like you so the MCAT will be an important factor for your application. If you are able to score a 29+ I really think you will have no issues.

A lot of medical school has nothing to do with how smart you are but more so how dedicated are you to studying 5+ hours a day 1st year or 9+ hours a day 2nd year. And how dedicated you are to changing your study skills as you progress. The way I studied in college just wasn't sustainable in medical school. To the OP you've shown that you are capable of adapting and learning from your mistakes. I think this will be a great aspect of your application that you can stress in your interviews. Do well on that MCAT though!
