Hi, I'm a newbie here. I'd appreciate some input. What would you rate my chances at getting accepted at Columbia?

-DAT:
AA-21
PA-19
QR-20
RC-19
Chem ? 25
Org ? 20
Bio ? 22
-GPA - 3.93
-Major - Biochem and Chem double
-Considerable volunteer and research experience
-Little dentistry observation < 35hrs
-AFROTC cadet 😎

My AA score is nothing impressive and my PA score is marginal at best for Columbia. I'm hoping that my GPA will negate any discrepancies on my DAT. Also, does Columbia stress significant dentistry observation? Any other tips?

I had a 32 AA and a 4.75 GPA and I barely got in....might have to pad your application a bit buddy...

No offense intended but why do you want to go to columbia? Do you live in a state that doesnt have a dental school? It seems to me that all private schools guarantee is a heavy debt load and a mediocre clinical education. Is it the name recognition that you are interested in, or are there a surplus of hot girls with very little clothing?? On another note, I think your stats are just fine and you will get in pretty much wherever. 👍

hey USAFdentist,
impressive numbers!! i remember seeing a thread about this topic....i think you're guarantee an interview. provided you applied early and react well in the interview, your chances are good! i hope you get in to CU man!

also, just out of curiosity, how come you want to go to CU?

Haha, that?s a good question. I think the primary reason is because I'm really focused getting into the OMFS specialty and I figure my chances are better at Columbia. Also, I?m looking for a change, I've been in Minnesota almost my whole life and I think I'll enjoy NYC.

Actually, this topic has been covered somewhat in other threads as well. Going to any school and doing well academically will almost guarantee you a spot in OMS.

The only true advantage that I see with going to columbia is that (in terms of OMS) UCSF will allow columbia students (and harvard students and perhaps some other schools......but i am not sure which ones) to go through their OMFS program in 6 years while attending med school at UCSF. All other dental schools will be routed through the 7 years OMFS program while attending med school at UC Davis.

That was what Dr. Pogrel of UCSF had said.

Here's UCSF's brochure......READ PAGE 2.

In terms of your stats, you'll probably get interviews from all the dental schools that you apply to..........just dont mess up during the interviews. 🙄

doggie

plus like all the enzymes and substrates?
it's like, impossible to remember all that names 2 minutes after reading them

heheheheehe

Holy sh1t! Buckyball's back! Nice to see ya, bud!

HEY BUCKY GOOD LUCK ON BOARDS!!

Yes everybody,

Buckyball is back! The original, the one and only, often imitated, but never duplicated! Others may try to play with their Buckyballs, but it's no comparison..... enough of being on my high horse.

Second year was a b!tch.... and still going through it..... got boards to do still. How's everyone else?

Before Just assuming that going to Columbia is going to get you into a specialty, try and find out the actual statistics to see for yourself that this assumption is wrong....If you are interested in OMFS, you should look at UPenn....because they have an extremely good matching rate into OMFS for UPenn students, which probably indicates that UPenn has some serious OMFS connections....statistics for these type of things can either be found on their websites or by emailing them.....

Hey man, if you want to do OMFS you should go to Harvard. From what I hear, I don't think any other students get the extent of basic medical training hsdm students get (preliminary examinations, etc.). Also, Harvard is cheaper than columbia, and waaay cheaper than UPenn.

I think being an oral surgeon could be tough. My brother is a second-year anesthesiology resident and he says that all of the residents and even senior staff at the hospital hate the oral surgeons because they don't really know anything about medicine - that certain responsibilities sometimes fall on the 'real' MDs around them. He told me not to pursue oral surgery because "it's just not gonna be my area." I don't know if that might be a little arrogant, or if he's just looking out for his little brother.

I really dont think you will get into any Dental School with those stats. They are way too low for any kind of dental school. Just think about it - 21 on the DAT... come on dude... You need at least 37 to get into Columbia. Also your GPA is very bad. What were you thinking when you asked that question?????? Columbia is a dream my friend.. try Howard ... and that would be only if you are lucky ... OKOK .. maybe you can get an interview there ...

I think your biggest problem is your PAT. With 19 no one has EVER gotten accepted anywhere. RETAKE THE DAT as soon as possible. Also write Howard a letter and tell them how much you want to get into their school.

God, I dont understand you guys ... dental school with 21 on the DAT and 3.93 GPA???? Are you coming from some other planet or what???? To get into ANY dental school you need at least 3.999998 GPA and 39.999999997 DAT.
Also you need some more research ... try to publish something in JADA or get a Nobel Prize for something ... Do your best cuz with that performance on the DAT and bad GPA I dont see you getting into any Dental school in the next 20 to 30 years ...

My last comment is: why did you have to make a whole post related to that question? Couldn?t you figure it out yourself ... i mean you have a GPA 3.93 - you should be able to answer that question yourself, right?

You're right, I'm looking at a pipedream right now. Until I can raise my AA another 10-15 points I'm thinking cosmetology school is my only hope. I'm glad you opened my eyes and allowed me to face my dark and grim reality.

I doubt your brother has met very many oral surgeons... Plenty of oral surgeons are trained through 6-year dual-degree programs, and these guys are real MD's.

Dual-degree OMFS programs currently make up about half of all the oral surgery postgrad programs in the U.S. today. (Source: www.aaoms.org website)

hey doggie u be going home home for vaca this sept?

home as in the motherland? probably not. what about u?

si
bought my tix
xpensive
but will be worth it

what u be doing then, month long + 1 week

Sorry to be so blunt, but to be totally honest, unless you are totally asocial and have an eq of like 0, or you are just so out of it, you have no chance of NOT getting in.

With your stats, you are guaranteed an interview and probably have a 99.9999999% chance that you will get in, esp if you apply early.

If you don't get in, it's not your stats, I'd be very concerned with your eligibility for any dental school and as a human individual....

it sucks......everything i do is revolved around the applications now....I'm coming back to school for the 1 week off to check if any secondary apps are in the mail. I'm seriously considering going back to the motherland tho....... 🙄
