so yeah i hate it when people would post in undergrad forums with "hey i only got a 39 on my MCAT with 20 years research, will i get in?" but in this case I'm just more so looking for advice.

current new MS4 US MD program bible belt area, most definitely not ranked lol
step 1: 244
Step 2 CS/CK: TBD
Preclinical GPA - 3.4 with 1 C as MS1
MS3 clinicals - 2 H 4 Passes
LOR - will have 3-4 really solid letters
deans letter ------ most is good, on one clerkship i have only 2 sentences that obviously describe me as mediocre. My biggest concern

Im afraid because I know that baords and GPA arent everything (i wish). mostly scared that programs will count me out because of that one rotation (after that rotation i honored the next 2 to try and make up).
Anyways, ive never had any desire to go to a top top program based on doximity's rankings.

But have been really interested in places like
UPMC
Wake
UK
UVA
UNC

these are reeealllly good places too. would i be counted out from here?
At this point i plan to apply to 50 programs. A lot of safety programs too. based on what i think a safety is. How many do you think ill get interviews from if the most competitive i reach for is Wake and UPMC maybe Umich?

i'd really appreciate honest but constructive responses if you would

Relax, you will match (99% chance) at one of those programs listed above provided you interview decently and can provide a few good LORs. You do't need 50 programs.. go with 15-20 as you are clearly okay with midtier programs. I think list 5 top tier programs and 10 midtier ones. You will match.

Do you guys know why people who apply to 30 programs only get like half that number (or less) of interview invites? So if i did apply to 20 shoud i hear back from all the midtier. if not. What would disqualify me from them

It can be pretty much a crap shoot - you never know who is reading over your app, I’d they are having a bad day etc...

Geography plays a role as well. Programs have limited interview slots - a program in the pacific NW is more likely to invite those from the west coast (and contact them if they have a last minute cancellation) rather than someone from the SE. People usually don’t want to move super far away unless they have some compelling reason (which you could hit in your PS).

With your stats you won’t have trouble getting interviews. No one is invited to 100%.

No one wants to spend time interviewing people who won’t come to their program. If you’re a top tier candidate, lower mid tier programs probably don’t think you’d realistically go there. Geographically, if a program hasn’t had luck recruiting people from the south to actually make the move up north in the cold, they’re less inclined to send out interviews. If you went to school far away and have a real reason, family, or your significant other has family by somewhere you’re interested in, it usually doesn’t hurt to let that program know.

I’m not offended. I think it’s a ****ty casual term that’s unprofessional, used by people that don’t have a clue, and disrespects the profession as a whole.

But that’s just me. ‍♂️
