Posted on the osteopathic forums and they said I had decent chances, wanted some more insight though because I only got a couple responses. 3.67 GPA, 3.62 science GPA, 25 MCAT (9/8/8), 2,500 hours as an Emergency Center medical scribe, and varied volunteer experiences adding up to ~100 hours. Do I have a good shot at DO schools or just a decent shot? Is MD just a waste of time for me? Any MD schools accept lower MCAT scores? Should I apply to in state (Michigan) MD schools? Thanks for any responses!

The GPA MCAT grid for 2011 to 2013 shows that applicants with your MCAT score and GPA have a 27% chance of a MD acceptance. However, that is a bit misleading since that number includes URM and applicants who have postgraduate degrees (Masters or PhD). So your real chances for an MD acceptance are less than 20%. Fortunately you are from a state that has 4 state medical schools. 3 of those would be worth applying to: Michigan State, Central Michigan and Wayne State. The 2 private schools, Western Michigan and Oakland Beaumont are also worth applying to. Your odds of an acceptance are still very low but it is worth a try. For DO you are in better shape because of your good GPA. Some lower tier DO schools have an average MCAT of 25 for admitted students. For DO schools apply to at least 15 to maximize your chances and submit your application this month if possible. Perhaps Goro could advise you as to which schools you would be a competitive applicant.

I think it is worth noting that I am planning on retaking the MCAT one more time this year and am really expecting a 28+, was really unpleasantly surprised with the score I received. Are there any out of state MD schools that have lower MCAT averages you'd recommend? Or not really?

Thank you for the response by the way! I have actually already applied to ~20 DO schools. Really hoping to get into at least one.

I'm expecting a 28 on the MCAT I'm taking in a couple of weeks, any OOS MD schools you'd recommend with my stats if I get a 28?

Truth be told, it depends on the subsection break down of that 28.

In addition, some schools average your MCAT scores as well, so a 28 (while an improvement) may not change your prospects all that much.

If you do increase your MCAT to 28 it would increase your chances at those 5 Michigan schools. For OOS private schools you could add Quinnipiac, New York Medical College, St. Louis, Creighton, Drexel, Temple, Jefferson. With a MCAT of 25 all these would be far reaches but with a 28 you might receive an interview.

You already know the answer to this. Perhaps re-reading MSAR might convince you? In case not, a 25 MCAT is lethal for MD schools, and not too great for DO.
