Hey guys,

I'm finishing up an unofficial post-bacc where I replaced classes and took a bunch of upper level science courses. I was able to maintain just above 3.8 in the last 78 credit hours and got my CGPA up to around a 3.15 and SGPA to 3.3. My MCAT is a 26 O (BS: 10, PS: 8, VS: 8). I have a ton of shadowing and community service with leadership roles. I worked as a ER tech for 2 years. Did some research, and am starting research under a new professor in the next week. I plan on submitting June 1st. I am also planing on retaking Gen Chem 1 over this summer and Gen Chem 2 over the fall.

I was wondering if you guys think it is even worth taking those final two classes, or should I just go for it? Also what are my chances as is. I plan on applying to only DO. Thanks and good luck to everyone!

You could apply and still take the classes over in the summer. I think you have a relatively decent shot at some mid-low tier DO schools. Your gpa and MCAT are kinda on the low side but you have some decent ECs. Even if you got A's in both of those chem classes it wouldnt make much of a difference to your gpa.

How do you know that if he got A's in both of those classes that it wouldn't make a difference to his GPA? AACOMAS uses a grade replacement policy. If he had C's in them, for instance, and receives two A's, then his sGPA would possibly increase to ~3.4+, which is good for DO.

Anyways, if you applied as is, I think you have a good shot. 26 is an average MCAT score for DO, your sGPA is average for some schools/slightly below average for others, but your cGPA is low and the weakest part of your app. Is this your cGPA on AACOMAS? Regardless, I think you have average chances if you apply early and will receive some interviews somewhere. Just make sure to apply to the newer schools. Your EC's look great.

Thanks for the input. I did get C's in Gen chem, it was back in 2005. I haven't gotten a grade lower than a B+ in over 4 years. I had a rough few years to start out undergrad, then I took some time off, worked full time and have been successful ever since. My question would be, does that trend count for anything? I understand that my GPA's are lower, but I feel like Im a completely different candidate.

Also, I would love the input of Goro, since he is an admin. But any other input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Chances are good if you apply early and you are willing to go anywhere...

I'd recommend re-taking the classes as they would boost your cGPA, and you want to present the best package as possible. The GPA is a tad on the low side, and you might not be able to get an interview at all school, which I think you deserve. I hope you'll apply to mine! Good luck!
