Hey guys I am a rising senior in my undergrad in NJ

Current GPA: Overall: 3.5
BCPM:3.24
Other: 3.76

Mcat: try 1 Physics 6 Verbal 7 Bio 9

My chances of getting into SGU in the Caribbean?
I have done plenty of tutoring, volunteering, shadowing, and been published first author for neurosurgery research.

Need opinions!!

Nice. Retake your MCAT and avoid the Caribbean at all costs.

Are you just not giving a damn about your MCAT or something? You have decent enough grades so I don't understand why your MCAT scores are crap.

What happened in BS the second time around? You just don't drop 4 points in a section without something going seriously wrong (especially at the lower end of the spectrum, where the curve is a bit more generous).

I would retake the MCAT. A 20 is probably not acceptable even for SGU.

You'll get much better answers at www.valuemd.com, or the carribean schools section of this website

You have a chance at MD in the US with a higher MCAT, why go to SGU

Berkeley Review MCAT prep for 3 months (no working, no research, no doing other stuff, just dedicate a 3 month block to nothing but eating sleeping and breathing MCAT review) and I guarantee you will be matriculating in a US school within the next 2 years.

OP best of luck with your medical school goals in 2011...just keep reading heavy and take a multi

I wouldn't guarantee anything. I have a friend with a 3.5-3.7 who took the in class TBR course and has been studying for the MCAT for about 2 years. He is still scoring in the 25's~ on practice exams. I think multiple factors are responsible for this. They include being a REALLY hard worker but not very intelligent, rigor of the undergrad education (this person went to a pretty easy school), not being able to grasp broad subjects and make connections between different classes/subjects (test anxiety doesn't count because there would be a large discrepancy between practice tests and the real thing). I am not saying that these are the case but these are some reasons why MCAT scores don't always correlate to high GPA's.

Though I do agree that you should take a year off and give it your all. How long did you spend studying for it?

Short answer: do you have a pulse and access to loans? If yes, SGU will take you.

The real answer: as the others above have said, take your time to truly study for the test, do a ton of practice passages and test, and aim for a higher score. Whether applying for MD or DO, you'll need to hit a balanced 30+ to reconcile the low scores. You really want to avoid the Caribbean and make that a last resort option. You'll have a much stronger support system from state-side schools, more networking opportunities, and better residency chances in the US.

The first time i studied, i took a class last summer and then studied lightly during the semester and hardcore during my winterbreak and took it in jan/
(all EK books)

the second time from mid march until the end of may
(kaplan ps/ek bio but not that much mainly focused on ps/princeton + ek verbal)

practice tests im getting about 33 usually
ps 11 v 10 bio 12
but test day i have no idea what happens, even admission officers i met with told me to get a learning evaluation because it just doesnt make sense. And i don't want to take the year off =/

I got all the TBR books and am retaking it on sept 1st

any other tips? i appreciate all the feedback

It is my strong belief that anyone who succeeds in college is capable of scoring highly on the MCAT, it is just a matter of self-confidence and practice.

Are you reading all the TBR chapters? Are you taking all the TBR tests for each section? How many practice tests did you do? When you get the answer wrong, do you go over why you got it wrong or do you just move on? When you get answers wrong is it because you lack the necessary background info or because you have a hard time connecting all the info in passage based questions?

Meh....MCAT is a reasoning test so it is not only a measure of preparation and knowledge but also intelligence which is more innate than acquired. Theres tons of people out there with 3.8+ GPA's and sub-30 MCAT scores (including retakes). It doesn't mean they didn't practice as hard as they could or didn't have self-confidence.

Taking a year off in hopes of becoming competitive for a US medical school (allo or osteo, it matters not) >>>>>>>> The very high chance of not matching into a US residency program from a Caribbean school.

Ditto everyone else that said take an extra year and focus on your MCAT. You clearly have the ability to get at LEAST a 25 in actual test conditions. Is that how you're talking the practice tests, under actual test-like conditions?

Here is some inspiration for you. IIRC, she welcomes PMs from people in similar situations, like yourself.

I just got the TBR books to study this time around
i plan to do 2 chapters a day and then everyother passage for each chapter and review every 4 days and do all the corresponding passages i left out
and a few verbal passages everday

i usually go over all the answers outside of verbal, i still dont know what exactly goes wrong. i set up ideal testing conditions at home. I wake up 2 hrs before the test shower eat etc. no one is home so ill take the test in silence and take the allotted breaks.

reason im shooting more for sgu is i have 6 bio classes in my transcript in my 3 yrs and i got a C, C, B, C, A, A

That is called an upward trend 🙂

I totally agree with this statement...This test is much more than memorizing facts. It is about how you can apply these facts in real life scenarion, which many (includng myself) have a hard time to do.

I actually agree with this. Brb need to wash my hands now.

Since you have the BR books, have you considered using SN2ed's study schedule?

Hello guys,
This is the first time that I post anything in this forum, however I have been following most of your posts for the last year lets say,

I just registered and I hope you guys could give me a little hint of what do you think are my chances for making it into the Jan 2012 class..
here are my stats:

Just graduated this Spring with a Biology Major (Florida Student)
cGPA: 3.46
sGPA: 3.32
Mcat: 26

I have around 80 volunteer hours at the ER, have been shadowing a physician for the past 2 years,
I have been a Biology Tutor at my university in a tutoring program from the school, ...
I participated in a medical brigade in the rural areas of Ecuador,

Member of two medical fraternities and one organization .......
no research
During my entire 4 years of college, I have been working very hard as a full time, I opened my own company and have helped my parents since I just came to the US about 6 years ago from south america, so I had to really handle that stress together,
btw english is my second language,

so far that is everything I can think about my stats, please if you think I have a chance let me know, or if you have anything constructive to tell me, I will be more than glad to hear from you!
I really like St George and I really dream making it there, since I know it is a great school where I will have a chance to become a physician... I also think Iwill adapt easily to the island since I also come from a Caribbean region in south america.... 😳

Apply DO, possibly also MD. if you retake the MCAT and score 30+ definitely apply to both DO & US MD. Forget SGU/Carib. Think of those as a last resort. Your GPA is competitive for DO.

Hey guys, I am getting really nervous because I applied to SGU medical school and was granted an interview but have not heard back from my interview with an interview date. My application was complete in September and I am applying for the Spring 2016 term. The email said that I am also being considered for their pre-med program. I am taking physics 2 and ocher 2 right now. Here are my stats:

cGPA= 2.67
sGPA=3.0
mcat score= took the new mcat and got a 485

I should also mention that I was dismissed from one university bc of grades and later transferred to another school and graduate from their. I did better at the second school. What are my chances looking like since they offered me an interview? Thanks everyone!

You are exactly what they are looking for.
Let us know when you are accepted.

They tend to be a bit more picky than Ross. If SGU doesn't take them, Ross will. They're certainly getting more desperate as of late though.
True (probably), but I've seen SGU take applicants like this as recently as this year.

It's fascinating to me the number of people that ask, "can I get in" without also entertaining the thought of "should I get in?" It's like they don't even consider the correlation between MCAT performance and failure, and whether they will just be wasting their money and time.

Still breathing?
Can write tuition check?

You're in.

I trust that you're comfortable with the idea of being unemployed and deeply in debt?

Surprising. A 485 is a 16 on the old scale. SGU's average MCAT is around a 27 I thought.

A 485 on 2015 MCAT is actually a 12 on the old scale (both scores representing the 10th percentile)...

Regardless, combined with that cGPA and sGPA... just brutal
