Hi- I was just curious what people who have applied before or heard about applying to UNC as an out of state applicant. Yes, I have looked at MDApplicants but there are very few from out of state listed.

If anyone would like to answer this question for UVa as well, I'd be interested again.

Thank you

Almost no chance for UNC (they select like 20 people)

For UVA
The 140 members of the entering class of 2003:
Virginians
66%

Out-of-Staters
34%

Women
46%

Ethnic Minorities
25%

MD/PhD
7%

GPA:

Mean Overall GPA
3.70

MCAT:

Biological Sciences
10.83

Physical Sciences
10.94

Verbal Reasoning
10.31

Writing Sample
?P?

I knew one guy that got in from Virginia. He was a super genius, so that is more than likely how he got in.

Unless you are a 4.0, 40 MCAT, published, etc... don't waste your money as an out-of-stater. Or you will get a very nicely worded reject letter stating they take very few out-of-staters but thanks anyway. I got one a few years ago.

Truthfully I don't know much about UNC. The only thing I know is that a friend of mine, who is a VA resident, got in, and his MCAT/GPA etc was not all that hot. This leads me to believe that getting into UNC as an out-of-stater isn't impossible. As for UVA, a third of their class is out of state.

To those UVA'ers...how's the research at your school? I perused the website, and noticed that the neurosci program is an interdepartmental initiative...do you guys know much about it for MD/PhD besides the fact that they have mstp's?

the md/phd program at uva is really good. i think last year the three people that finished up the program got matched at hopkins and stanford. don't kno too much else about the program specifically, but i kno uva is really big on research in general.

Ha ha ha--like none. Seriously I go to school on the other side of Tobacco Road (go Blue Devils) and our pre-med advisor won't write us a rec. letter if we apply. Don't waste your time or $$

That's harsh, but not surprising based on my limited dealings with the pre-med office at Duke. As for getting into UNC, it does happen, but I wouldn't bother unless you are an exceptional applicant.

What others say is true but UNC is moving towards a policy of accepting more out-of-state applicants. However, I doubt any of you will be able to experience this in the near future.

Take care.

This is untrue. I know Dean Singer discourages people from applying to UNC out-of-state, but for her to deny someone a committee letter because of an application there is ridiculous.

A friend of mine is on mstp (rising second year). There are 10 rising second year MD/PhD students right now. From what I've heard, your first year 1st semester curriculum is a little different from MD students, but you basically do the same stuffs in the 2nd semester. About half of the first year students participate in the summer research program after the first year, which is very intense and time consuming (2 months long, work full time Mon to Friday, I plan to do this too. 🙂 ) You can find a lot of other research programs for students at UVA website.

Yeah i was wondering the same thing.. i know that UNC screens whereas UVA does not so i guess we're all holding our breaths for that secondary 🙂:fingers crossed:🙂. But anyway, I'm hopeful. i applied to both and am from NY. :luck:

Although only 20 out-of-staters will attend UNC, they have to accept many more than that to get 20. In other words, the out-of-state waitlist may have considerable movement. This makes sense because many of the out-of-staters that are good enough to get into UNC also get into a top 10 and may get offered better financial aid from a private school. I know of an out-of-stater that got in with a 36 mcat (I don't know what his gpa was). A 36 is fantastic, but all this talk about needing a 40+ is a bit of an exaggeration.

Class size:160
Out of State: 20

Pretty much a standard. They have certain "quotas" to fill. Of course they won't tell you that, but its true.

Eminem,

Are you applying again this year? Maybe we'll be classmates. We should convice Swiper and Franklin to get part time jobs in the admissions office and put in a good word for us.

To all,

I apologize for the hijacking.

I'll see what I can do. 😉

And in return, I'll give you your pick of a cowboy cookie or a squeaky toy.
