I am contemplating applying to med school possibly in the next two years. First, I must mention I am a non trad student, URM, and I been out of school for quite sometime. I decided to go back to school and I am entering the fall quarter in a recognized University. Going over my BCPM gpa I have calculated a 3.1 and a cum. gpa of 3.2. All this is including gpa from my technical degree which I received years ago. Most of my relevant grades are predominately A'S and B'S very few C's. I did not do as great when I working on my technical classes and I received two F'S 1 quarter after another on the same class becuause I was unable to go to school because of work. I would register and because of my ignorance I did not know that you must drop the class your self and that your prof will not necessarily drop you of the class. I went for a combine 5 weeks for both and was given a letter grade. I hate myself for letting that happen but can't cry over spilled milk right. Well I calculated if I keep a moderately high gpa within the two years while in the Univ. I could be applying with a BCPM 3.3ish and Cum. 3.4. From reading other post here I understand that I may have a chance to possibly get in DO schools. I guess my question is what are my chances at an allopathic university. My goal is finish strong on my last 2 years remaining and demonstrate that I am capable of excelling in my upper division science classes. Your time to answer my questions will be greatly appreciated. Good luck to all of you and God bless.

Being as we're both studs an all. You got this mf'er in the bag bro.

I had a 2.8 going into the process (almost 10 years after graduation), including 2 F's, with a non-relevant degree, went back to my local university and took 50-60 hrs of science, studied my ass off, got a 4.0 and rocked the MCAT, and got into my first choice MD program no sweat. Being more "mature" you will certainly be able to do that, and the admissions people will overlook your old grades at most places. On top of that you likely have a little more life experience by now that will help you on your essays and the interview process.

do you mind telling me what your MCAT score was when you 'rocked' it?

Also, do you think there's any big difference between a student with a 35 MCAT and a 40? I mean do most med schools not really consider MCAT scores to be different for the 35+ crowd with regards to non traditional/low gpa students?

I know its important for the top tier schools when the applicant pool is consistently filled with 4.0ers. but i was wondering if it makes any difference for others.

Thanks byd and Nasr for your response and words of encouragement. You know sometimes we all need that from time to time. Nasr that confidence is what I need to have more thanks. Bydotte that is inspiring that you came from having a subpar gpa and bouncing back with a fury you definitely showed them. We share similar academic circumstances and I will try to do the same. Like I mention earlier going to Univ this fall. Cannot wait to start to do my upper div science classes. Planning on working hard to maintain a high gpa since I am already at a disavantage. At the beginning of the year will start working on my extrac. Well once again thanks, good luck, and God bless.

The title of your post made me laugh when I first read it (next time spell out student instead of "stud"). Your stituation is not unsalveagble, depending on how well you do over the next 2-3 years. If your GPA is above 3.7 for the next 2 years and finish your undergrad with a 3.5 or higher overall, you have a competitive grade for most medical school. The other factor is your MCAT, while a high MCAT won't offset a sub-3.0 GPA, it can really help prove to teh schools that you're able to handle the courseload and the material and that you have the potential of doing well in medical school. Other than don't get any more Fs. Do whatever it takes, drop your classes, find easier professors, but from now on, no more F or D.

My title is funny. I did not realize I did that until you point it out to me. GPA of 3.7 overall and or Bcpm is unattainable for me since I already have too many credit hours completed. I calculated with a 3.7gpa through out my remaining undergrad, I would be around 3.5gpa overall and a Bcpm of 3.4ish. I totally agree with you about (stopping the bleeding now) and preventing further GPA damage.
