I'm currently a senior. My gpa is 2.93, but after this semester, I am confident it will be at least a 3.0. I still have 3 semesters left before I graduate in fall of 2013. I already have over 40 hours of shadowing hours and a letter of recommendation letter from the president of the Occupational Therapy Honor Society at FAMU. I am apart of the Allied health honor society also. Before I apply, I will also be members of several prominent organizations for Occupational Therapy, such as the AOTA and Florida Occupational Therapy Association. I am a black male and I noticed that I am one of about 12 in the whole program...and I go to a HBCU! Will this play a role in whether or not I am accepted? What are my chances of getting in?

Have you taken your GREs yet? How are your pre-req grades? I think that as long as you can show the schools you apply to that you are an asset and that although your GPA is low you have showed improvement then you have a good chance. good luck

Thank you. I am taking the GRE in the upcoming summer. My science gpa is around a 2.75, but I am not sure if that is considered as pre-requisites. My grades have been on the rise since spring semester of my sophmore year.

Our situation is some what the same, except I am a black female. My undergrad GPA was 3.0 Since I graduated last year, I'm just going to try to work on getting A's in the prereqs that I still need to fulfill and also try to get a really high score on the GRE. That way when it is all said and done, my prereq GPA and my GRE score should overshadow my cum GPA. Also some schools also only look at your last 60 credits as opposed to your entire cum GPA. I also plan on getting as many shadowing hours as I can. I may also look into doing some volunteer work as well just to give myself some leverage.

I don't believe OT schools care whether or not you graduated from a HBCU. From the looks of it they seem to be more interested in your competency level through school. I wouldn't worry about that factor. I would focus on ways you can raise your GPA, knock the GRE out of the water, and increase your shadowing hours.

Where we differ in this situation, is that I attended a Better HBCU than you, The Great Bethune Cookman University. (sorry I couldn't help myself, hehe)

My goal is to get over 100 hours by the end of next fall. Hopefully that will be enough. Btw....FAMU is the #1 hbcu =P.......#rattlerstrike

I would focus on getting the highest grades you can in any pre-reqs and courses you have left. Volunteer and shadow with several OTs in different fields and try to get at least one letter of recommendation from an OT you volunteered with, if possible. You can also easily check your current GPA by multiplying the letter grade (i.e. A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, etc.) with the number of credits the class is worth (i.e 4, 3, etc.), add that number to the other calculations for the other classes and divide the total by the number of credits and you will have your GPA. I do this to "predict" the grades I need in the current classes I am taking.

I have a
3.52 last 60 units GPA
3.8 Prequisites GPA
~3.0 cumulative GPA
Extremely bad grades in the past in science courses because I was depressed during a good few quarters of undergrad.
GRE: verbal:168 quantitative: 169 AWA: 5
60+ hours of observation
Many extracurriculars
Do I have any shot of being accepted into ANY OT program?
