Chances of Getting in?? Please Comment

gpa is fine for any D.O school with decent MCAT. for MD it is still possible with better mcat
 
What do you think is a good MCAT score on this new MCAT, its pretty confusing to say the least when I was trying to compare it to past years.

A 125 on each section (so a 500 composite) is like scoring around a 24-25 on the old MCAT with around an 8 average for the subsections.

So you want to be a few points above a 125 on each section which would be sort of like a 30 on the old one.
 
Well I like the knowledge and I worked hard to be able to get another one. My physiology degree overlapped with a nutrition one by 18 hours, so I only need another 18 to get a second masters with a little more research. Plus I have a job with the FDA that is helping me pay for it some. Getting two masters from NCSU is a good thing. If I don't get into med school I am doing a Ph.D. and at the school I am at now all the professors I have had have two or three masters plus the Ph.D. I just turned 22 a few days ago so it's not like I am wasting time.

Any volunteering or clinical experience or student organizations in undergrad? With a decent mcat (80th percentile or higher) you'll be fine for MD.
Unless you really messed up the MCAT...you are golden for DO. Come back when you get your scores!
 
Yeah it is kind of all over the board. I have job shadowed a neurologist and helped out there for a while, I have did over 100 hours with a dentist and one at a hospital. Currently I am job shadowing a DO for a little bit to get that experience. I also have an MD at ECU school of medicine who is writing me a recommendation since he gave me a scholarship his family supports. I am just waiting for the MCAT scores to come back, kinda nervous about the new one. I thought it was super easy besides the psychology, obviously with my degree I do not have much knowledge of psychology. Thanks for the comment!!

Sounds like good shadowing experience! Any other ECs? And yeah waiting for those scores is absolutely brutal...if you felt good about it then I'm sure you did good enough
 
I think I did too. I felt great about it all. Its super easy stuff even if I did not do as well as I want I know the stuff, I was slightly nervous just the psychology was brutal. Yes the waiting is killing me. I found out we get the preliminary back on Friday. I have tons of random extra circular lol. I worked three jobs in undergraduate as an Orientation Counselor, Resident Assistant, Academic Tutor and had leadership in all. I have volunteered at every shelter and organization under the sun it seems like. I also play piano at a huge church for almost 7 years. I currently have a job with Apple and the FDA as an inspector. I have done a few things, my grades are good, especially undergrad. I just want to get in somewhere and then join the Army as a doctor. My grandparents and everyone was in the Army so I am going to go that route and serve a while and my brother is also in there. So that is the plan hopefully it will all work out well.

knowledge is great, and having a backup plan is great too.

if medical school is your main goal, there are better ways of beefing up your application than masters programs, since they are of minimal importance to most admissions committees, not to mention they cost money

that said with a 3.8 uGPA and a good MCAT you should be fine

Yup you're a great interesting applicant! If you did well on the mcat you will be good to go! Let us know how you did!!!
 
Well I am a professional student in a few ways I suppose. I do have a job at the FDA as an inspector, and I make good money. If you read above it says why I am getting a second MS, but its really as PSM or professional science masters. A combination of business and science really. I only have to take 12 more hours to get it so its not wise to leave it on the table, and the classes are all online besides some petty research. My EC's are fine I could list a whole sheet full of them. I have over 1200 hours of volunteer hours and stuff like that. I do not really care about that except I enjoy the shadowing. I am just one of those people who loves knowledge and I just like learning. I just turned 22 so I am excited still about school. If I do not get into a DO school I am going to get my Ph.D. I already have plenty of schools I could apply to and definitely get in. I just would rather do medicine this way instead of being the researcher. Thanks for your input though.
 
@soccermac42 - so you know, your A+s won't count as anything more than 4.0s so your GPA may be inflated at your institution. Where I did my MS they offered A+s and while you couldn't go over a 4.0 - if you got 3 A- and 3 A+ in a semester your GPA would be 4.0, but by AMCAS standards your GPA would be 3.8.

Just so you know and aren't surprised.
 
Oh I know. Definitely no grade inflation at NC State you get what you deserve and at my undergraduate it was the same thing as they never offered A+ as a grade. It all still counts as a 4.0 everywhere. My GPA combined with grad school and undergraduate will still be higher than any of the DO schools acceptance. Thanks for the information.

Just an update did well on the MCAT and got 12/15 interviews for med school, one dental school interview from my last years DAT, and every interview for my podiatry applications. I got 4 acceptances before I cancelled the rest of my interviews. Cannot wait for med school.
 
Congrats! What schools did you get interviews at and where did you get accepted if you don't mind me asking? I just like hearing success stories. It keeps me motivated
