I'd like to know my chances of getting into a MD school and if I should be applying to DO schools as well (I would prefer MD). I've looked up that MCAT/GPA stats hundreds of times, but still can't get a good idea of where my resume falls into the picture. I'm just starting to get a list of schools together, so any advice on particular schools that I should add would be great (I'm an NJ resident).

oGPA: 3.72
sGPA: 3.52 (got a D in orgo the first time, B+ second time)
MCAT: 512

-I'm in my senior year - fall semester I got a 4.0 and I may be able to do the same this spring so hopefully that upward trend will help me out, still figuring out what I'll do during the gap year

-Worked in cancer research lab over the summer, completing an honors thesis in the lab this year, received a grant
-50 hrs shadowing MD's (pediatrician, orthopedic, rehab. medicine, ED)
-150 hrs volunteer EMT for a rescue squad + training hours (just became an EMT last summer), in an area that gets a good number of calls
-65 hours volunteering in a hospital over a 9 month period
-3 years volunteering as part of a service learning course (mentoring & tutoring middle/high school students in run-down neighborhoods) - received a leadership certificate at the end
-3 years as a teacher assistant over the summer for EOF biology program (assisted in lectures, taught recitations)
-philanthropy and academic committees of a fraternity

Based on your LizzyM score using your overall GPA, you have a 63% chance of MD acceptance just based on stats.

Looks like you've covered all your bases in terms of ECs. I think if you apply broadly and strategically you have a good shot at MD. You may want to apply to both MD and DO it would certainly increase your chances of acceptance, but unless you would be totally happy to go DO it's often better to do an MD cycle first and then do both the next cycle if it doesn't work out. But that really depends on how you feel about getting a DO degree.

Also be sure to have a well written app sent very early. That will definitely increase your chances. I'm sure quite a few of those with your stats who didn't make it were late apps or apps that did not apply broadly enough.

I'll let others chime in with school list advice.
Great work with the MCAT and good luck!

Apply to all 3 of your NJ schools. You could also try these schools:
NYMC
Albany
Hofstra
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
Penn State
Quinnipiac
GW
Georgetown
Oakland Beaumont
Medical College Wisconsin
Rosalind Franklin
St. Louis
Creighton
Tulane
Seton Hall (if it opens for 2018)

Thank you, I will definitely look into those schools. Also, do most schools take into account if you have visited or attended an event there, or is researching the school usually enough? I have visited a few NJ schools but that's it.

No.

I just did this on another thread as well. Use the "msac calculator" http://bemoacademicconsulting.com/med-school-acceptance-calculator-msac but this is only based on your stats and it's pure probability so you may also want to talk to premed advisor but even then it's too hard to know.
