Hi,
I am an IMG interested in Neuro residency and research. I ve done my M.D from one of the premier institute of india. score step 1/2 - 96/98. still to give 2cs. No research in neurology so far. No LOR from U.S. My questions are

1. What are the chances of my getting into institutes like MGH/UCLA/JHU ?

2. What are the overall chances for getting any neurology residency ?

3. What can i do so i can get in programs like MGH/UCLA/JHU ?

MGH, UCLA, and JHU? Grrrr... I'm biting my tongue...

Honestly, your odds are determined by so many more things than what you mentioned that it is impossible to give a decent assessment. That being said, I will share my gut instinct when I ready your post:

Odds of matching into neurology somewhere: Very good.
Odds of matching to "MGH/UCLA/JHU": Not good.

What can you do to improve your odds? The usual stuff: research, US rotations, get stellar LORs (which will mean more coming from US neurologists). However, even if you do all of this, your odds at the programs you mentioned are less than stellar. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Thanx for ur reply. Actually i am vigorously interested in research. My idea of residency was only to get a good fellowship f/b post doc in a frontline research lab. Now what are my chances

1. To get a fellowship if i do some research with my limited resource in my country?

2. How can i get rotations / observership in those institutes?
