chances of matching into anest

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
US medical student witih 216 step one and avg grades.

what are my chances? will i match into middle tier programs?

looking into chicago.

Thanks

47.3%

A 216 is below average for anesthesia, but not disastrously so. I don't know what the specific averages are for Chicago schools. Also hard to say without knowing what your clerkship grades are, ECs, research, etc.

Only thing I could tell you based off your Step 1 score is that it might help to take Step 2 early and knock it out.

how do you come up with 47.3 % when charting outcomes showed US grads with step one between 210-220, 173 matched, and about 26 didnt?

He's giving you a hard time, man. There's a 99.443% chance that WLG7 made up that number on the spot.

His point is that with that score a large number of surrounding factors come into play, and we (they) need more info to be able to provide constructive criticism.

I don't know what you're talking about, that number was meticulously researched over the course of several hours.

Of course I was kidding. Oh interwebs, how you fail to convey sarcasm...

Most residency programs don't really advertise their average board scores on their websites, so if you're interested in your competitiveness for a particular program you could try sending an email to the PD or program coordinator.

 That made me stifle a laugh at work.

Here's a question for you Chief. If you already know the match statistics, why are you here asking this question? We don't know you, and you didn't share any useful information for us to go by. So, you already have the data to make your own determination. That doesn't bode so well for you I'm afraid.
Apply widely, don't waste your time with the elite programs, and statistically you should match somewhere. I hope your other stats are above average.
The Magic 8 ball says... OUTLOOK NOT SO GOOD.:meanie:

point well taken, the reason i posted was to see if there are other PGY-1s out there who had similar stats as me and matched ok, and what programs are reachable. Details rather than just numbers like the charting outcome was what I was looking for. I should edit this thread to that.

Thanks for the advice though, yeah, I know i can kiss the elite programs goodbye. In terms of other things on my app, like i stated, avg grades, high pass in surgery, IM, psych, pass in peds and ob. taking step 2 in late sept, mid october, hoping for 226 plus or so.

:smack:

your chances are pretty good.

apply to a good mix of programs and try to get good letters, interview well, do an away, etc.

Get good letters, do really well on stepII, and try to have good interviews, you will probably be fine. Aways might not hurt you either.

bump... rather than creating a new thread...

How about a DO student with average grades and a step 1 of 248 matching an upper tier program?

apply far and wide, i was surprised at the interviews i didnt get when i applied, even though i matched my #1 choice and got plenty of good interviews, i found that the DO may have contributed a little to my not getting certain interviews.
