I didn’t match into dermatology but after shadowing a PM&R doctor I realized I’d be just as happy doing this and don’t want to go through the heartbreak of not matching again. However, I worry that my application will be looked over due to the amount of derm research I have (7 pubs with more on the way) and derm specific experiences. I have decent stats (step 1: 256 step 2: 249 level 1 629 level 2: 597) and will hopefully be able to get some LOR during my TY. Can anyone shed some light on my chances of matching PM&R with all this derm on my app as a potential red flag?

Get some PM&R experience during your TY and work hard intern year and you’ll match fine.

There aren’t always R2 positions available so you may end up with a gap year.

Sorry about the match. I don't think anyone will care about your previous research focus. Most applicants are not bringing much in way of pubs or scholarly output and matching just fine. So you could even leave it off if you're concerned, although that's not necessary. Your Step scores and clinical grades probably matter much more. If you can get some PM&R experience during TY, like RangerBob said, that'll serve you well.

You realize you have 100% of control over your ERAS application right? If you think you have too many dermatology research projects, remove some of them off your application and leave it out -- maybe keep one or two that were impactful. But literally remove it off, replace it with PM&R research during your intern year, and add some PM&R experiences and re-apply. Your scores are solid, you should do okay.
