What are the chances of getting a scholarship after coming off a waitlist? Is it a possibility or are the chances slim to none?

So give more to those already thete even though they know that X number more are coming? Why? And why distribute early? FA/scholarship money can be distributed after class started as well.

stop being a paranoid premed

I think where @renman97 is coming from is that previously accepted students are seen as more desirable than waitlisted students and thereby are perceived as being more deserving of scholarship money.

Nonetheless I appreciate your input. Definitely going to stick around on some of the waitlists I was planning to withdraw from.

Someone who finishes 4th 5th and 6th in an Olympic event is still a world-class athlete. Med schools don't think in the manner you're ascribing. If candidate are particularly valuable, they'll get the sweet package right up front.

Would they still give a scholarship to a waitlisted applicant who sent in a LOI?

People who generally get off the WL give their intent. Right? In this case, what reason would they have to award them a scholarship if they have their word that they'll be coming?

I'll add that these scholarships can be targeted for recruitment, rather than only given for merit. As a hypothetical, say you're a URM high on the waitlist and the school's directly admitted cohort has an abnormally low number of URMs that commit that year. You're now much more likely to get accepted and/or offered recruitment money. They need to enroll you a lot more than they need to reduce the debt of a cookie cutter classmate that's already planning to attend them anyways.

1) Every waitlist at every school is ranked in some fashion, even if just 3 "piles" of high, medium, low. There is no school that starts with random pile of alternates and just randomly picks and chooses which to take in.
2) There are 150+programs which means there can be 150+ ways this gets decided and who makes the decision
What about unranked and then re-evaluate each candidate (like the DO school I was WL"d at)?

Every WL person is an alternate acceptee by the med school. That is, the admissions committee has evaluated, interviewed, reviewed and voted to accept the student into medical school just awaiting a seat. And the dean may be just be the official decider with staff and other faculty recommending or there could be an official subcommittee dedicated to this. Even in an unranked list, there has to be those who were argued at committee meetings who should get a seat, so up to the top 25-50 are well established. Then as you dig down further in the pile and later in the cycle, as school considering you can see where else you have been accepted and may pass you over. Or it could consider balance to the class in gender, diversity, or other attributes that have been noted in the application. Sometimes very late in the in cycle, they may decide on who is close or is willing to take a seat
This is actually comforting- it reinforces that being on the WL is not that they don't want to accept you they just didnt have space.

I’ve been offered multiple scholarships off my WLs don’t sweat it

That is correct. Everyone on selected as an alternate (ie WL) has be deemed competent and qualified to enter medical school.
Just pray that a spot opens up for all of us WL-ees !( hopefully by a person getting into another program that suits them better and not bc of a disaster.)

Or they were being conservative.
Thats even more comforting bc when people give up their A's and they gave fewer A's to begin then the WL should move.
