  1. Pre-Medical
I know this is pretty long, but I don't really have the resources at my university to ask these questions. I didn't know about MD/PhD programs until a little more than a year ago, so my app is more built towards a PhD than an MD/PhD. Because of this, my clinical experience is practically nonexistent. I will be taking a gap year, and I am hoping to find a research position at a medical center to buff up my clinical experience, since my home institution has almost no opportunities for volunteering or shadowing. I think that my lack of clinical experience is the biggest negative of my app, so should I even apply this cycle or wait?

Demographic:
White Male

Undergrad:
Biomedical Engineering major at top 15 engineering insitution
Polymer Engineering certificate
cGPA: 3.71
sGPA: 3.78
MCAT: 515

Research:
3 years in a tissue engineering lab. 3 pubs (IF ~ 20, 8, and 8). 3 poster presentations, 1 at national conference. Undergraduate thesis.
One summer research grant at home institution in my main lab.
One summer research grant at a top SOM in a stem cell bio lab (not productive but learned a lot).
Senior design project working with surgeons at major hospital to develop medical device

Shadowing:
40 hrs ped cardiac surgeon at SOM during summer program
10 hrs urologist

Clinical Volunteering:
None.

Non-Clinical Volunteering:
Started science outreach program with middle school in a economically disadvantaged city (50 hrs)
Helped organize career fair for my department (20 hrs)
Research mentor to other undergrads/new grad students in my lab

Work:
TA for three years

Awards:
Research Grant to fund proposal from sigma xi ($1000). Is this impressive/should I include it?
Departmental scholarship for top Junior.
Various small scholarships from university. Should I include?

Red Flags:
No clinical experience. I will be volunteering once I graduate and move, so can I include future hours?
C in Transport Phenomena class and D in Biostats class during the same semester. I have A's in four other calc/diff eq classes, so hopefully this isn't too bad. How to address?

School list:
I am looking more so at the grad programs and prospective PIs at the schools rather than the med program just by itself. I am a Texas resident, so does this improve my chances at TX schools like regular MD? Are there any schools that I should just not apply to? Am I way off on the tier of school that I should be applying to?
UCSD, Emory-GaTech, Pitt-CMU, Baylor, USC-Caltech, UVA, UAB, UMD, UNC, Rochester, UTSW, UTHSC San Antonio, CWRU, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, UPenn, Geisel, Duke, Northwestern

I know this is a lot, so I appreciate any advice or critique that you might have. Thanks!

Hello there!

I can speak towards some of your concerns. First off, MSTPs do not give preference to in state residents. I am not sure about non-MSTP MD/PhDs, but my gut feeling is that it doesn’t matter nearly as much as MD only.

As for your concern regarding clinical experience, I too started out thinking I was going straight PhD. I had perhaps 60 hrs of shadowing and 35ish hours of clinical volunteering total. It didn’t seem to impede my application; got plenty of IIs and accepted to several schools, including some more selective ones. I wouldn’t worry too much about it; definitely get some under your belt if you can, but don’t detract from research, which is the most important part of your application.

i would say apply this cycle and get as much clinical experience as u can til u apply

I have a very similar background/stats and interviewed at several of the schools on your list. I took a couple years off after graduating to work in a lab doing tissue engineering research. It's been fun and definitely beefed up my application/gave me lots of stuff to discuss during my interviews, so I think it's good that you're doing one.

Some of my interviews were more "why medicine" focused, so it would probably be helpful to do some more clinical volunteering. I had around 100 hours of volunteering and 100 hours of shadowing which was definitely enough to get interviews and have something to talk about.

I think if I were in your position, I would pursue clinical volunteering ASAP and apply this cycle. Even if you submit your primary as early as possible (beginning of July), that gives you until the end of June to get something started.
