Hi guys!
I wanted your opinion on what my chances are. I'm going into my 4th year at UCSD in Physiology and Neuroscience and I have a science GPA of 3.16 and overall GPA of 3.35 (without +/-) DAT score of 21 AA, 20 PAT, 19 TS (19 Bio, 23 GC, 18 OC), 24 RC, 19R. I'm taking my DAT again in Sept and I'm retaking a few classes I got a C in and I'm hoping my fall grades will help boost my GPA. Other than that I've taken the majority of the pre-reqs and I have experience shadowing as well as serving as a volunteer dental assistant. I sent out my AADSAS application on 7/18/14 and I'm almost done with all my supplementals, I'm hoping to finish them all within two weeks.
What do you guys think? >.<
Thanks!

If you took all the basic pre-req and got C, don't retake them yet!

Take upper level bio courses first, and math.

A C is acceptable, if you take it again and don get an A,

Aadsas will calculate both the C and new grade together, there for no big change, but upper level bio will look better.

GPA is a tad bit on the lower side, DAT are around avg, so you might get some interviews with luck, and by luck I really mean if the rest of your application is better than your stats. Focus on the DAT for now though, because it really isn't that hard to improve your Ochem score, if you do really well, you will be in a good position.

If the average AA for accepted students last year was 19.7, how is a 21 AA average?

Thanks everyone! 🙂
I'm hoping if I get a higher DAT score that will put me in the running for some CA schools.
Do you think I could get into NYU or USC w these stats?

🙁 Your comments make me a tad bit nervous. My DAT scores are AA: 19 TS: 20 Bio: 20 GC: 22 OC: 18 PAT: 19 RC: 19 QR: 16 .....my oGPA: 3.79 and sGPA: 3.68..... Would you say I'm not competitive?? I knew my DAT scores weren't amazing but I was hoping to be seem as a competitive applicant overall.

Ok, so with OP's DAT scores I was really referring to the TS section, AA is fine, but with her sGPA a tiny boost on the DAT may help.

As toothsine said though I admit I am a bit desensitized to above avg DAT scores because of these forums.

Beachbump6, you should only take what I, as well as other students, say as a grain of salt because in all honesty we can't predict how a cycle will turn out for anyone. But in your case if I did have to predict, I would think you will definitely get a few interviews, assuming you applied broadly. But again, I am just a student in this pile of mess just like you. 🙂

Your GPA is strong.

Your GPA are average

Strong + average = competitive

Don't be nervous.

I think the best advice is to just cover your bases. Since you recognize that your GPA is the weakest part of your application, continue to take courses in order to boost it until you're holding an acceptance letter. I would not sit back and wait to see how this cycle pans out. I don't have the exact stats on DAT/GPA means and standard deviations in front of me, but I believe that your DAT is less "above average" than your GPA is "below average". Since you've got fall grades and a DAT retake coming, you'll have another shot this cycle at boosting your app and hopefully pushing yourself over the top. Good luck!

21/19/20 is pretty high already. I dont think you need to retake your DAT if you're aiming for USC; your DAT is right around their average.
