I didn't find a thread that answered my question so forgive me if it is somewhere else. I'm 21 and pretty much wasted my first two years of college and have been out of school this current year. This fall I will start at a different school, basically restarting, retaking all my classes. Pretty much what I want to know is how much those first two horrible years will affect me in getting accepted even though hypothetically I would do as well as a normal accepted vet student.

P.S. When i say horrible I mean horrible. 1.96GPA over four semesters.

If you retake all your classes and get a good GPA then I doubt vet schools would care much. They might ask you about it on the interview.

It truly depends on the school and how they calculate GPAs. I would suggest contacting your schools of interest and scheduling an appointment to meet wtih the Admissions Coordinator. If you fax your transcripts ahead of time, they can review them and meet with you to tell you how you might fare. I am not going to lie, it will be tough, depending on how bad your grades are and if those bad grades are in science courses, it will be even tougher, but it is not impossible.

You will just have to work EXTREMELY hard to make up for those 2 years. Hard lession learned I hope.

Good luck:luck:

This will vary ALOT.

Some schools offer grade forgiveness (meaning you wipe the slate clean, which would be an option for you since you plan on retaking everything.) This would probably be your best option.

Some schools average all pre-reqs that are re-taken, so if you had a D, and get an A, you will have a B/C for thier GPA calculations in the pre-reqs. However, many of those schools do NOT eliminate the original grade when calculating overall GPA.

Some schools substitute in retaken classes (so if you took the same courses again and did better, your GPA would be based on the better grades.)

It really varies. Also, realize there are different GPA's: pre-req GPA, last X credit hour GPA, and overall GPA. Different schools have different pre-reqs, and different schools place different emphasis on GPA. A few schools also have 'grade forgiveness' for individuals that are superior in other areas, but that will deal with a slight deviation from their base GPA limits, not a major deviation.

If you redo everything and do well, I don't think it will be held against you. True, it may hurt you in your CUM GPA, but you will have a chance to explain it in your admissions essay (and in a separate location on your application). Don't worry about not getting in, you still have 4 years of undergrad ahead of you!
