Hello,

I'm a fourth year med student applying to Neuro. I was wondering what my chances might be at a top tier program like Mayo or MGH. My Step I is a 248 but my 3rd years grades are mostly passes🙁 I have some research but its not in neuro.

Thanks

I'm serious. I want to know whether I can do anything to improve my chances. How much would taking a year off and doing research help?

My prediction is you'll get an interview invitation from all the programs you apply to, except maybe some lower-end programs that know you'll rank them low (as backups). Good luck!

The 248 is reasonable for the top-tier programs. There will certainly be applicants with a lot more research experience, but then again the top programs attract a lot of MD PhDs too, and you'll have a hard time competing with them no matter what.

As long as you get good LORs from your neuro rotations, the fact that you only passed your clinicals won't be seen as a big deal or a dealbreaker.

Try to write a neuro case-report or something. Even if you don't have it done by the time you interview, at least you'll have something to talk about when they ask.
