So a few of us on here noticed that the scoring scale for NBMEs 6 (and 7?) were changed in the last few weeks. We were debating why the change was made. Well by buddy emailed the NBME people and they told him that the scale was changed to better predict actual performance (instead of reflecting a change in scoring of the real exam). The changes were made based on a recent group of step I takers.
So there you have it .... in case you were wondering.

I believe it was around ~10% increase.

So, originally a 73% was 231...now it 83% is a 231.

PS: Came up with this from personal experience.

Just saying, I just took form 7 and based on what I got 83% seems really steep for a 231, but I'll look again I guess.

Does anyone know exactly when this change occurred? I took it on 4/24 with a few of my classmates, but did not get extended feedback so I don't know my percentage.

No way was it changed such that 20 more correct questions are required to get the same score, even in the middle range. By your "personal experience," do you really mean your opinion?

My opinion, based on having taken all of the NBMEs with extended feedback when available, is that any change was probably minor, on the order of 3-5 points given equal percentage scores. Here's how I come to that conclusion: I took 6 and 7 before they were changed and my scores on 11 and 12 were identical. (I took them in this order: NBME 6=258, 7=264, 11=264, 12=268.)

For all the voodoo about which NBMEs are most predictive, they are remarkably consistent, at least at the upper end. What people don't seem to realize is that they are not trying to predict your Step 1 score in the way the UWorld sim exams are. They are assigning you a score as if you had, on that day, taken an abridged Step 1 exam in the years preceding the release of the NBME form. Depending on your time to exam, the age of the form, how much of the form's content is now included in FA/UW, how you slept the night before, and many other factors, these simulations will more or less accurately predict your actual step 1 score.

Long rant summary: The most recent forms' content more closely mimics the actual exam, but among the more recent tests (6, 7, 11, and 12) there should be little difference in reported score at a given knowledge level. Please, please make the threads about "which NBME is best" go away.

If someone has taken 6 or 7 recently and scored in the 255-265 range and wants to share their percent correct, I'd be happy to compare. We could interject some, you know, facts and maybe salvage this thread. 😉

Every question is worth 2-3 pts on these diagnostics. The difference b/t a 257 and 252 is two questions. Even 247 to 242 is 2 questions. I really hope the real thing has a nicer spread than that. In that regard, perhaps the spread was much nicer before they adjusted the grading scale recently.

whatever, if they adjusted the scores so that you have to get a higher percent right in order to get the same score, so be it. if anything that bodes well for us since it is less likely to overestimate your score.

but who cares really. the nbmes are a tool to give you some sort of window into a score you could possibly get. for some people its dead on, for some people its off. nothing beats the real thing

and it makes sense that 2-3 points of a difference correlates with 5 or more points of an change in predicted score. There are 100+ more questions on the real thing

I do, that 5 points on a practice exam could be the difference between Ortho and Family med. What am I supposed to say if a PD asks for my practice NBME scores during my interview?

Weird, I thought 7 was supposed to be the best predictor.

I took 6 on the 15th. At the bottom of my score report it says February 2011 so I am assuming that is the last time it was edited so the changes occurred after that?

i got approx 80% correct on NBME 6 and ended up with a 212. judging from above posts, it appears that I should have got higher? or is this an appropriate score?

I posted my recent percentages and scores in the NBME thread (for 6, 7, 11, and 12 all taken after the scoring change). If it matters.

1 week leftttt....

Yes, those 5 points make a difference psychologically, but I guess I'm sort of glad that the NBMEs are less likely to OVERpredict 😕

I'm not sure how I feel about it. I'll tell you in mid-July when I get my ACTUAL score.
