I just found out from my great uncle that my great-great grandmother had an iliicit affair with an Indian Chief in Oklahoma (in case anyone is interested his name was "Dancing With Blue Balls Around The Fire". Although this sounds funny in English, in Indian tradition Blue Balls are a gift bestowed on powerful chieftains.) and that apparently everyone in the family is fairly certain that my great grandmother is the fruit of that relationship. If that is so, (incidentally, I am considering DNA testing to confirm this. I don't 100% trust my great uncle. He once swindled Mexican immigrants out of money they were going to send home to pay for critical surgery of a relative), then I am part Native American.

Although half the med schools have made a decision about my application, the other half have not

Is it too late to contact AMCAS and have them notify these remaining schools of my suspected Native American background?

Hands down one of the best posts I've ever read.

I say go for it right away. I'm in your boat too- I've decided to put Hispanic on my AMCAS, since my dad is an orphan who is a dead ringer for Luis from "Sesame Street". I plan on talking like Rosie Perez in "White Men Can't Jump" during my interview. Sounds good, right? 👍

Also, you should threaten your interviewer at Hopkins or Harvard or wherever you decide to go with obscure tribal rituals.

i think you might need to show documents that show affilation to the particular tribe you claim to be part of.

For the purpose of medical school admissions, you do not have to provide documentation of your tribal affiliations, also called a Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood. AMCAS only requests a self-description. Some scholarships, however, may want to see your papers.
