Is it true that you cannot apply through ERAS for a residency spot if you are currently in a residency program? (ie. do you have to drop out of your current program to re-enter the match?)

oh really? so, if I were a surgical resident at program X, I could apply to psychiatry programs while continuing to work the rest of the academic year? that's allowed??

Nope, untrue. Even has a section where you can list GME training and list in progress.

Yes it is allowed. There are no ERAS or NRMP restrictions and it is often the best way to find open positions.
